The webcam recorder (and the screen MediaRecorder path used on Linux and fallbacks) kept every chunk in a renderer array and built one Blob and one ArrayBuffer from all of them on Stop. Blob.arrayBuffer() fails above 2 GiB (NotFoundError at 2.3 GB, never settles at 4.6 GB in Electron 43), and the webcam onstop swallowed the error, so a webcam track longer than about 36 minutes at 8 Mbit/s was lost without a message. Each chunk is now appended to a file in the main process as it arrives (open/append/close/discard-recording-file-stream). Close runs the same finalizeStoredVideo step as store-recorded-video, and WebM files get their duration written with the bundled ffmpeg. If the file cannot be opened, the recorder keeps the chunks in memory and stores them the old way. If a chunk cannot be written, the part on disk is kept and the recording is reported as failed. Streams are closed when the owning renderer crashes, is destroyed or reloads, so the part already written stays on disk. Refs webadderallorg#1139

- A failed close (write error or rename) now returns the path of the part that was written, so the failure message can point at it. - WebM post-processing can no longer fail a save; on any error, including a missing ffmpeg, the file is kept as written. - An open that started before its page went away is closed even when the new page is already watched (one token per watch instead of a flag). - A failed webcam save shows an error toast instead of only a log line.

If finalizeStoredVideo throws after the stream was closed, the file is on disk but the old catch-all response dropped its location. finalizeKeepingPath returns the path with success: false.
Chromium's MediaRecorder MP4 muxer keeps its write position in a uint32 (media/muxers/output_position_tracker.cc) and CHECK-fails once a recording passes 4 GiB, which kills the renderer. The webcam records MP4 at WEBCAM_BITRATE = 8 Mbit/s, so the HUD crashed about 72.5 minutes into a webcam recording (webadderallorg#1139; both crash reports symbolize to OutputPositionTracker::WriteSpan under Mp4Muxer::PutFrame). The webcam now records video/webm;codecs=h264 when MediaRecorder supports it. The WebM muxer has no such limit. canPlayType reports H.264 in WebM as unplayable and the exporters expect the webcam as MP4, so main remuxes a webcam WebM with H.264 to MP4 (stream copy) when it saves the file: on the streamed path, on the in-memory path, and for a file left by a crashed renderer. Screen recordings and other WebM files are handled as before. Fixes webadderallorg#1139

Stacked on #1142. The conversion to MP4 runs where #1142 saves the file, so this branch contains #1142's commits too. Until #1142 merges, the change to review here is the last commit (the three before it are #1142), samhvw8@4f4dd0ec. I can rebase this onto
mainon its own if you'd rather take it first.Description
This is the actual cause of the 73-minute HUD crash in #1139.
Chromium's MediaRecorder MP4 muxer stores its write position in a
uint32_tandCHECKs the addition (media/muxers/output_position_tracker.cc):So any MediaRecorder recording to MP4 kills its renderer once the output passes 4 GiB. Reported upstream as https://issues.chromium.org/issues/574578846. The webcam records
video/mp4;codecs=avc1.42E01EatWEBCAM_BITRATE = 8_000_000. My webcam files came out at 987,519 bytes/s, which reaches 2^32 bytes after 72.5 minutes. Both crashes in #1139 happened 73 minutes in. With the Electron 43.1.0 Breakpad symbols, both crash reports have the same stack:The change:
video/webm;codecs=h264whenMediaRecorder.isTypeSupportedsays yes. It's the same codec, in a container whose muxer has no such limit.canPlayTypereports H.264 in WebM as unplayable (""), even though Chromium does play it (I checked a MediaRecorder file in Electron 43). That's probably why the webcam moved to MP4 in the first place, and the exporters (the Windows GPU path proxies anything that isn't MP4) expect it. So when main saves a webcam file, it remuxes H.264 WebM to MP4 with stream copy and deletes the WebM (remuxH264WebmToMp4). That happens on the streamed path and on the in-memory fallback, so the editor and exporters still get MP4/H.264. Only*-webcam.webmfiles are touched; screen recordings keep their format.store-recorded-video.Motivation
Fixes the crash in #1139. #1142 and #1145 make the crash survivable (the webcam file is kept up to the crash, and the screen recording is stopped and saved). This one removes it.
I reproduced both sides in Electron 43.1.0 with a harness that records like the HUD (250 ms timeslice, chunks streamed to a file), using Chromium's software H.264 encoder:

Testing Guide
npx vitest run electron/ipc/recording/webmDuration.test.ts src/hooks/recordingMimeType.test.ts. The remux tests use the bundled ffmpeg on a live-style H.264 WebM (written through a pipe like MediaRecorder): the result is an MP4 with H.264 and a duration, and the WebM is gone. A WebM cut off at 60% (what a crashed renderer leaves) still becomes an MP4 that decodes without errors. VP8 stays WebM, and so does an H.264 screen recording.closeRecordingFileStreamsWhenOwnerGoes) has no test of its own;recording.tshas no handler tests. Its two parts, closeWhenOwnerGoesandfinishWebmRecording, are tested.recording-<ts>-webcam.mp4and no-webcam.webm, and the editor shows the webcam.Checklist
