feat: T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false turns T3 Connect off - #26967
Our company only allows T3 Code on work machines if it sends no telemetry and uses no third-party relay. T3CODE_TELEMETRY_ENABLED=false covers telemetry, but T3 Connect has no off switch: official builds always offer Clerk sign-in, and a server with a saved link reconnects it at startup.
Change
T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false turns T3 Connect off on that machine. It reads values like T3CODE_TELEMETRY_ENABLED (false, no, off, 0, n); unset or any other value changes nothing.
Server. On the server, hasCloudPublicConfig only decides whether the CLI offers t3 connect. A saved link is restored and used from stored credentials either way. So the server also checks the variable where it restores a link at startup, accepts a new link, and publishes agent activity. t3 up stops offering Connect and t3 connect is hidden; both explain why when asked. Link requests from other clients are refused, and the environment and scheduled tasks stop advertising relay features that wouldn't work.
Desktop. The app reads the variable from the shell profile like T3CODE_TELEMETRY_ENABLED, and passes it to the backend (including WSL) and to the web UI.
Web.hasCloudPublicConfig() is false when the desktop app says Connect is off, so sign-in and Connect settings are hidden and the Clerk auth shell isn't loaded. A plain browser on t3 serve needed no change: production keys already hide Connect outside the Connect domain.
Mobile. No change. It still pairs directly with a server that has Connect off.
LAN, port, SSH and Tailscale connections are unaffected, and so is telemetry. No defaults or settings UI change.
Scope and approval
Proposed in #26896. No maintainer has replied there yet, so this is filed ahead of approval; it implements that proposal and nothing more, and I'm happy to close it if the direction is a no.
Verification
Desktop app (vp run dev:desktop with Connect public config, fresh state), variable unset vs false. With false, the T3 Connect and Publish agent activity rows leave Sharing & access, the welcome wizard drops its T3 Connect row, window.Clerk is never defined, and the renderer makes no Clerk request:
Built server with official-build public config, a throwaway --base-dir holding a saved link to a fake relay, and a logger for non-loopback connections:
$ t3 --help -> lists "connect Set up T3 Connect for this machine."
$ T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false t3 --help -> no connect entry
$ T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false t3 connect link
T3 Connect commands are unavailable: T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false, or this build is missing T3 Connect public configuration.
[off] T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false t3 serve --base-dir <tmp> --port 47811
[off] GET / -> 200
[off] INFO: T3 Connect is off (T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false)
[off] connection attempts: raw.githubusercontent.com, registry.npmjs.org x2 (no relay, no Clerk)
[on] t3 serve --base-dir <tmp> --port 47812
[on] GET / -> 200
[on] INFO: agent activity publishing enabled
[on] connection attempts: raw.githubusercontent.com, registry.npmjs.org x2, relay.connect-off.test x4
The GitHub and npm attempts happen in both runs and come from provider version checks, not T3 Connect.
CloudLink.lifecycle, AgentAwarenessRelay, and ServerEnvironment tests cover link refusal, publishing, and capability reporting, and each fails without its check. The startup reconcile skip and the scheduled-task webhook guard have no focused tests; the runtime check above covers the startup path. otelEnvironment.test.ts pins the parsing; publicConfig.test.ts and DesktopBackendConfiguration.test.ts cover the desktop bridge and WSL forwarding. check:changed passes except ServerEnvironment.test.ts > publishes proven install ownership…, which also fails on upstream/main on macOS.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds an explicit environment switch to disable T3 Connect in the desktop app and server while retaining saved links. Default behavior is unchanged, and the opt-out does not delete configuration or broaden access.

Walkthrough
The change adds T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED parsing and environment propagation, exposes the setting through the desktop bridge, and gates Connect behavior in server and web code. Tests cover disabled behavior, and the remote-access guide documents the setting.

The shared helper disables Connect for recognized false values. Desktop shell capture and WSL forwarding include T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED. Tests cover parsing and WSL forwarding.
The desktop bridge adds getConnectEnabled(). The synchronous IPC method reads the host environment, and the preload caches the result during initialization.
The server checks the setting before cloud-link operations, relay publishing, webhook-origin use, and desired-link startup. Tests cover disabled linking and publishing.

CLI messages include the disabled setting as a reason Connect may be unavailable. The web configuration check returns false when the desktop bridge reports Connect disabled. The guide describes how to disable Connect and its documented effects.
Clarify or resolve the remaining Windows configuration and saved-link behavior before merging; disabling Connect may not have the expected effect in those cases.

Capture the setting from the Windows shell profile.
When T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false is set only in the PowerShell profile, Windows does not capture or install it. The desktop UI and backend therefore leave Connect enabled, including saved links. Add the variable to WINDOWS_PROFILE_ENV_NAMES and copy it into config.env.

Guard relay health and credential issuance when Connect is off.
The relay’s normal connect path accepts only a saved, ready cloudflare_tunnel; it does not select LAN, Tailscale, or proxy endpoints. However, the server handlers do not enforce Connect state. With a reachable saved managed endpoint, a valid relay proof still receives a health response and a new "cloud-connect" credential while Connect is disabled.
Guard both CloudLink operations. Keep the HTTP handlers thin and preserve ordinary LAN and SSH pairing.

This test does not call linkProof. If its guard is removed, a valid request can still produce a link proof while Connect is disabled, and this test will pass. Extend this case to assert that linkProof returns connect-disabled.
As per coding guidelines, “Backend behavior changes ship with focused tests for that behavior.”

Not changing the Windows PowerShell profile finding: it isn't specific to this switch. The desktop app reads T3CODE_TELEMETRY_ENABLED from the shell profile only on macOS and Linux (WINDOWS_PROFILE_ENV_NAMES in apps/desktop/src/shell/DesktopShellEnvironment.ts holds just PATH, FNM_DIR, and FNM_MULTISHELL_PATH), and docs/user/telemetry.md tells Windows users to set it as a user environment variable. T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED follows the same rule, and the guide in this PR points there. Reading PowerShell profiles for these settings would be a separate change covering both variables.
Telemetry can be switched off with T3CODE_TELEMETRY_ENABLED=false, but T3 Connect
has no equivalent, so official builds always ship with Clerk sign-in and the relay
available.
With T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false the server skips restoring a saved link at
startup (still releasing activation), refuses link proofs and relay configs,
and treats the link as absent for agent activity publishing; `t3 connect` is
hidden. The desktop app forwards the variable from the shell profile and to
WSL, and tells the web UI through a new desktop bridge flag, so Connect
settings and the Clerk auth shell stay out. Any other value changes nothing.

…elay paths
Share one readConnectEnabled effect instead of repeating orDie, read the desktop
flag once per renderer instead of on every render-path call, and move the value
parse table to the shared helper. With Connect off the server also stops
advertising agent activity publishing and relay webhook URLs.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Read the desktop flag once when the preload loads, keep the existing lifecycle
tests untouched, guard the advertised publishing capability first, word the
refusal for remote clients, and shorten the user doc note.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`false`, `no`, `off`, `0`, and `n` now turn T3 Connect off, matching the
telemetry variable. The helper moves next to the telemetry parsing so it
reuses the same literals and leaves connectAuth untouched.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nect is off
A saved link with a manually reachable endpoint could still answer relay
health checks and mint cloud-connect credentials with the switch off.

Read T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED from service.env when planning routes.
hasCloudPublicConfig reads T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED from the CLI process environment only. readSetup reads service.env for T3CODE_LAN, but not for the Connect setting. Therefore, service.env can disable Connect for the background service while t3 up still offers Connect or reports a Connect link.

Update the route-planning logic in `up` so the Connect-enabled decision uses
`T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED` from `service.env`, consistent with the service

verified on linux against github/main (5732bbee39) and this head (899257d4c2f6ffac62d2f6284885f9caadc16bfa), using isolated state, one background dev server at a time, repo playwright and google chrome.
main ignored T3CODE_CONNECT_ENABLED=false: the authenticated link-proof endpoint returned a signed proof (200). this head refuses link proofs, health requests and credential minting with the explicit disabled message. startup completes with connect off.
added the real repository through the app, selected codex gpt-6.1-sol, and completed two real turns through the web composer, including a follow-up after restarting with connect disabled. direct pairing, link-state reads and unlink still work. removing the variable and restarting restores link-proof signing (200).
fixed cli route planning and enabling subcommands to respect service.env, plus preference updates before persistence or saved-relay access. reproduced the publish-only bypass reaching oauth, then verified that login, managed linking, publish-only linking, publishing and up --connect all refuse disabled service configuration. publish --disable still succeeds. the running server refuses webhook preference updates while disabled.
regression checks reproduced the gaps before the guards. the final focused run passed 61 tests. vp run check:changed 54c5f25249961a1aa0b61932329092eadbd9d6fc passed through blacksmith, including formatting, lint, knip, graphql, affected typechecks and tests. the explicit pr base handles the worker's shallow history.
native desktop ipc and clerk/sign-in behavior, macos/windows/wsl, native ios/android, real saved-link restore/resume, external relay publishing and webhook delivery, clerk login, and actual lan/tailscale/ssh transport. no relay account was available, and no fake relay or saved-link fixture was used. the captures prove the web/provider path, not native desktop behavior.
