fix(client): show reconnecting instead of stale working status - #25471
When an environment stops answering, cached active threads still say Working with an elapsed timer even though the connection banner says reconnecting. This makes an unreachable agent look active. Fixes#25449.
Change
Pass the existing environment connection phase through shared thread-shell presentation, including quiet cached reads. Web/desktop and React Native thread lists show Connecting, Reconnecting, or Offline for cached active work and suppress its work timer until connected again. Known terminal outcomes and pending requests retain their existing priority. Connection loss does not change the authoritative runtime or move threads between sections; pinned rows intentionally stay above Working.
Scope and approval
This is a focused correction of an obvious status inconsistency, submitted under the small bug-fix exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. The shared presentation change and both client consumers address the same defect. No setting, wire contract, provider behavior, or persisted state changes.
Verification
Before the fix, both client resolver regressions failed: expected Reconnecting, received Working. The shared-atom regression also failed because cached shells lacked connection phase.
vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadShell.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadInbox.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/state/presentation.test.ts apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.logic.test.ts apps/mobile/src/features/threads/threadListV2.test.ts: 192 passed, rerun by the parent.
CI=true vp run check:changed: passed format, lint, knip, affected-package typechecks and 323 tests across 8 files on the rebased head. The first post-rebase test run could not launch the pinned Chromium runtime; installing that test prerequisite resolved it.
Parent code audit: no actionable findings. A separate Claude Opus 5.5 review was attempted but could not start because organization subscription access is disabled; no independent review is claimed.
Before / after — actual Electron captures. Same disposable projected running threads, selection, viewport and Working setting. The remote fixture server is paused for both captures. Before: pinned and unpinned rows show Working 12m. After: both show Reconnecting without sidebar timers; pin precedence, Working membership and the historical Failed row remain intact. This GIF alternates still captures, not a motion comparison.
Sidebar enlargement for narrow screens:
Recovery without reload. Resuming the same remote server restores Working and its timer and removes the reconnecting banner. The candidate recording below is normal speed, sampled at 8 fps; it is not a latency benchmark or a baseline/candidate motion comparison.
Proof uses real Electron rendering/transport with synthetic projected runs and startup reconciliation disabled on the disposable fixture server; no provider executed. Base: 3ca62a5644572aab1cf7a058944aa44df516734c; captured candidate: a648ced13d1 (patch SHA-256 07c97a869024f8b145bdcfa783b372bf39bb3642fe985029cd530c3062fd40dc). Current head 8d182c03ef5 is rebased onto 071239804e3; git range-diff reports the fix unchanged. The existing captures demonstrate the unchanged connection-status derivation, status rendering and timer guard; they were not recaptured after the rebase. New base changes to mobile row layout have logic/typecheck coverage here, not new mobile visual proof. Both captured desktop builds used an isolated profile and --disable-gpu. Only the current desktop sidebar's reconnecting path and recovery were visually exercised; mobile, legacy sidebar, and other connection phases have focused logic coverage only. The central timeline's cached Working timer and lineage counts remain outside this sidebar fix.
Implemented with GPT-6.1 Sol in the Codex harness through T3 Code. Desktop proof by GPT-6 Astra in the same harness.
Current-head merge verification
verified current head 66eb5acb0d92d02b7bcd35e2ac77b88c6e2efdd4 after merging main. the merge keeps main's removal of the unused sidebar priority table and passes connection phase through the new side-chat shell call. intent and 14-file scope are preserved.
blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passed format, lint, both knip checks, seven package typechecks, 361 tests across nine files, and 11 compiler checks. two independent read-only reviewers approved this exact head without findings. github reports clean mergeability; 23 checks passed and 11 skipped, with none pending or failing. no unresolved review threads remain.
chrome exercised the replay provider through the actual adapter, orchestration, and client: working -> reconnecting without a sidebar timer -> recovered approval -> working -> done, without reload. the existing approval row retained its alert while disconnected. this 14-second normal-speed gif recording has startup frames trimmed; uploaded playback and seeking were checked.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Web and mobile thread lists now show connection status instead of stale Working indicators for disconnected active work. The change is confined to client presentation and preserves pending-request priority without altering runtime or persisted state.

Thread shells now carry environment connection phases into web and mobile status resolution. Cached active work can display as Connecting, Reconnecting, or Offline instead of Working. Approval and input statuses, terminal outcomes, and thread placement retain their existing behavior.
Presentation state exposes each environment’s connection phase. Thread-shell reads include the phase, and tests verify that phase changes update cached reads while preserving runtime data and source identity.
Web and mobile status resolvers map connection phases before runtime-based statuses. Tests cover status precedence, cached terminal outcomes, unseen-completion state, and Working-section placement.

Explanation
Issue [#25449] requires connection-aware status for cached active work, no work timer while disconnected, status restoration after reconnect, and unchanged outcomes and placement. The shared resolver maps active cached work to Connecting, Reconnecting, or Offline. Thread-shell point and list reads carry the connection phase. Web and mobile consumers apply the connection status before runtime status while preserving pending requests and terminal outcomes. The reported tests cover timer suppression, recovery, pin placement, and Working membership.

Rebased onto main (a7d0447). The remaining Test Web failure is in apps/web/src/components/files/AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx, which this PR doesn't touch. The failing test differed between the two runs here (the font preview, then large text preview recovery), and the same file is failing on main's own CI right now (run 40606502504). Everything else is green.
