Description

Adds build_tiered_compaction in src/utils/tiered_compaction.py. It turns CompactionConfiguration into the TieredCompaction capability from pydantic-ai-harness, the building block for compaction on the Pydantic AI path (LCORE-4691).

  • New runtime dependency pydantic-ai-harness==0.30.0, pinned exactly like pydantic-ai==2.38.0. 0.30.0 is the newest release that supports pydantic-ai 2.38.x (0.31.0 needs pydantic-ai-slim>=2.40), so moving this pin needs a pydantic-ai bump. It brings no new transitive packages.
  • Konflux: the package is not on the RHOAI index, so it goes with the PyPI sdists in requirements.hashes.source.txt, with the wheel and sdist hashes from uv.lock. Its build backends (hatchling, uv-dynamic-versioning) are already pinned, so requirements-build.txt only gets two via lines. These files were edited by hand, because make konflux-requirements needs podman and was not run.
  • Inputs: config, model (the chat model, which the summarizing tier also uses) and an optional context_window. It returns None when compaction is disabled.
  • Tiers, in a fixed order: ClampOversizedMessages (response text and tool-call parts over 50,000 tokens, a fixed constant), then ClearToolResults, then SummarizingCompaction(incremental=True, preserve_first_user_message=True, keep_user_messages=True).
  • Mapping: threshold_ratio becomes target_fraction; buffer_turns becomes keep_messages (messages, not turn pairs); buffer_max_ratio becomes keep_tokens=int(context_window * ratio), only when a window is given; context_window is passed through, and without it the harness looks the model up in genai-prices, then falls back to DEFAULT_CONTEXT_WINDOW (128K instead of the harness's 200K; the same constant LCORE-4765 adds); estimate_tokens is the tokenizer on the capability and every tier; token_floor is ignored.
  • Summary prompt: an optional compaction.summary_prompt configuration field, validated when the configuration loads: it must have {messages} as its only replacement field (without it the harness silently drops the transcript). The builder only reads it, so a bad prompt fails at startup, never during a request. threshold_ratio: 0 passes config validation, but the harness rejects it with ValueError.
  • Off the live path: nothing calls the builder yet. LCORE-4764 attaches it at cutover, with the window from the context-window resolution in LCORE-4765.
  • Must be settled before LCORE-4764 (also in the module docstring): with keep_user_messages=True, harness 0.30.0 gives the retained summarized user turns the keep_messages tail slots (and the keep_tokens budget) first, and drops the unsummarized messages that no longer fit, so they are neither summarized nor sent. At the default configuration, once four user turns have been summarized, that includes the request being answered, with or without a known window. In 0.30.0 preserve_first_user_message also does nothing while keep_user_messages=True. Both flags are set because the ticket asks for them. The options are an upstream fix or keep_user_messages=False; a larger keep_messages only postpones the loss.
  • Size: +461/-13 in 18 files: the builder module and its tests, the configuration field and its tests, dependency, lock and Konflux files, README index entries, and the regenerated configuration and OpenAPI documents.

Checklist before requesting a review

  • I have performed a self-review of my code.
  • PR has passed all pre-merge test jobs.
  • If it is a core feature, I have added thorough tests.

Testing

  1. Run uv run pytest tests/unit/utils/test_tiered_compaction.py tests/unit/models/config/test_compaction_configuration.py: 36 passed. They cover disabled and enabled configurations, tier order, each mapping, the tokenizer, token_floor, the zero ratio, the configured summary prompt and its validation at configuration load. One test runs the built capability inside an Agent: the chat model gets the summary and the current question, and not the oldest turn. Its user turns are larger than keep_tokens, so the tail loss described above does not apply there. This checks the harness pin against pydantic-ai 2.38.0.
  2. Run the full suites:
    • uv run pytest tests/unit: 3974 passed, 1 skipped.
    • uv run pytest tests/integration --ignore=tests/integration/container_lifecycle: 326 passed.
  3. Run uv run make format (no changes) and the make verify checks. black, ruff, pydocstyle, pylint and pyright pass; pyright checks against the installed harness. mypy (run with --no-site-packages) reports the same 50 errors as on main (1 in src, 49 in tests), and none of them is in a touched file.
  4. Run uv lock --check: it passes. The harness requires genai-prices, httpx and pydantic-ai-slim, which are all already locked and pinned for Konflux. The hashes in requirements.hashes.source.txt match uv.lock.
  5. Run grep -rln --include='*.py' -E 'tiered_compaction|pydantic_ai_harness' src: it lists only src/utils/tiered_compaction.py.

Not run: a hermetic Konflux build or make konflux-requirements, which need podman; lint-openapi. No e2e run either, since nothing on the live path changes.

Full details: Performance And Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

PASSED. The PR adds a builder and dependency metadata only. src/utils/tiered_compaction.py:106-140 creates three fixed tiers and performs no API calls, nested input loops, unbounded storage, or list operations. Prompt validation at lines 64-69 is linear in the prompt size. The builder has no live-path caller in the reviewed range, so it introduces no active request-time regression matching the check criteria.

Full details: Security And Secret Handling

Explanation

PASSED. The PR adds a compaction builder, a context-window constant, dependency metadata, documentation, and tests. The changed code contains no plaintext secrets, credential literals, logging of conversation data, API or WebSocket endpoints, SQL/path operations, or Kubernetes/RH Secret manifests. The dependency hashes are integrity metadata, not secrets.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Preserve the request being answered during compaction.

With keep_user_messages=True, harness 0.18.1 gives retained older user turns the keep_messages slots and token budget. If those turns fill the budget, it removes unsummarized tail messages, including the current request. The model can then answer without seeing the user’s question. Do not attach this capability until the retention policy reserves the current request; test that case with short earlier user turns. The pinned harness also bypasses preserve_first_user_message in this branch. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

We should probably expose the summary prompt as an additional compaction configuration option and perform validation there. The compaction process should not fail during request processing due to unsuccessful prompt validation.

The pydantic-ai migration design compacts agent history with the
harness TieredCompaction capability (clamp oversized messages, clear
old tool results, summarize). It lives in the separate
pydantic-ai-harness package, which the project does not depend on yet.

Pin it to 0.30.0, the newest release that supports the pinned
pydantic-ai 2.38.0: 0.30.0 requires pydantic-ai-slim 2.38 or newer, and
from 0.31 on it requires 2.40 or newer. The pin is exact, like the
pydantic-ai one, and has to move together with the next pydantic-ai
bump. The package adds no new transitive dependencies: genai-prices,
httpx and pydantic-ai-slim are already locked.
The hermetic Konflux build installs only what the files under .konflux
list, so the new runtime dependency has to be there as well.

pydantic-ai-harness is not on the RHOAI index, so it goes into
requirements.hashes.source.txt with the PyPI hashes of the 0.30.0
wheel and sdist, the version pinned in pyproject.toml, next to
pydantic-ai, which is handled the same way. Its sdist builds with
hatchling and uv-dynamic-versioning, both already pinned in
requirements-build.txt, so only their "via" lists change.

The files were edited by hand because the generator needs podman. The
0.30.0 sdist was built locally with the pinned build backends
(hatchling 1.33.0, uv-dynamic-versioning 0.14.1), and the hashes were
checked against the downloaded files.
After the pydantic-ai cutover, conversation compaction runs as one agent
capability, the harness TieredCompaction. Before each model request it
estimates the history and, above threshold_ratio of the context window,
applies its tiers in order until the history fits.

utils.tiered_compaction.build_tiered_compaction(config, model,
context_window) returns None when compaction is disabled. Otherwise it
returns TieredCompaction with three tiers in a fixed order: clamp
oversized messages (50_000 tokens per part, the harness documentation
value, as no configuration option exists for it), clear old tool
results, and summarize with the chat model (incremental, keeping the
first user message and the user messages). The mapping is:

- threshold_ratio -> target_fraction
- buffer_turns -> keep_messages (messages, not turn pairs)
- buffer_max_ratio -> keep_tokens = context_window * buffer_max_ratio,
left unset when the window is unknown
- context_window -> context_window, with DEFAULT_CONTEXT_WINDOW as the
  fallback
- estimate_tokens is the tokenizer of the capability and of every tier
- token_floor has no harness equivalent and is ignored

The builder is not wired into build_agent or any request handler; the
cutover (LCORE-4764) attaches it. The module docstring records a known
issue of harness 0.30.0 that has to be resolved before then: with
keep_user_messages set, retained user turns take the keep_messages tail
slots and the unsummarized messages that no longer fit, which can
include the request being answered, are dropped.

Unit tests cover the disabled configuration, the tier order, each
mapping with and without a known window, the tokenizer, token_floor and
a zero threshold_ratio, which the harness rejects.
…ilder

The design allows an optional Red Hat prompt for the summarizing tier in
place of the harness default. The harness fills it with
str.format(messages=...): without the {messages} placeholder it silently
drops the transcript, and any other replacement field fails only at
summarization time.

build_tiered_compaction takes an optional summary_prompt. It is checked
when the capability is built: the prompt must contain {messages} and no
other replacement field (literal braces have to be doubled), otherwise
ValueError. Without it the harness default stays in place.

Unit tests cover the default prompt, two valid custom prompts and six
invalid ones (no placeholder, empty, an extra field, a format spec, a
conversion, a malformed field).
The other builder tests only inspect the fields of the returned
capability. Nothing checked that the pinned pydantic-ai-harness 0.30.0
capability actually runs with the pinned pydantic-ai 2.38.0.

Add one test that runs an agent with the built capability over a
history that exceeds the window: the chat model receives the summary
and the current question, and no longer the oldest turn. The history is
chosen so the retained user turns exceed keep_tokens, which keeps the
test clear of the harness 0.30.0 issue noted in the module docstring.
Add the new module and its test module to the README indexes of
src/utils and tests/unit/utils, in the format the other entries use.
The custom summary prompt was an argument of build_tiered_compaction and
was checked only when the capability was built. Once the cutover builds
the capability while handling requests, a bad prompt would fail those
requests instead of failing at configuration load.

Add an optional summary_prompt field to CompactionConfiguration. It is
validated when the configuration is loaded, with the rule the builder
used: the prompt must contain the {messages} placeholder and no other
replacement field (no format spec, no conversion, literal braces
doubled), otherwise the configuration is rejected with a message that
names summary_prompt. When the field is unset, the harness default
prompt stays in place.

build_tiered_compaction drops its summary_prompt argument and reads
config.summary_prompt instead; the validation moves out of the builder.

The validation tests move to the CompactionConfiguration tests (two
valid prompts, six invalid ones), and the builder tests check that the
configured prompt replaces the harness default. The configuration dump
tests expect the new field. The generated OpenAPI, model and
configuration documents carry the new field and its description.
