Description

Updated the AG-UI widget system design and spike docs to introduce client/server conversation modes, replace run_shield_moderation_v2() with the shield capability integrated into the pydantic-ai agent, and scope the LCORE-4576 implementation ticket to client mode only (blocked on pydantic-ai migration) while extracting OTEL tracing and server mode into separate tickets. Also added a proposed JIRA for an end-to-end demo using CopilotKit, Lightspeed Stack's /agui endpoint, and an MCP server to give teams a practical reference for evaluating and adopting the AG-UI endpoint.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified how client mode uses frontend-provided conversation history without server-side persistence or compaction.
    • Updated server-mode guidance to cover stored conversation history, persistence, and compaction near context limits.
    • Documented the required conversation identifier and how moderation blocks are returned as text responses.
    • Updated request-flow and endpoint comparison guidance to reflect these behaviors.

- Add client/server conversation modes to widget-system.md: client mode
(frontend-owned history) and server mode (LCS-persisted with compaction)
- Replace run_shield_moderation_v2() with shield capability on the agent
- Scope LCORE-4576 to client mode only, blocked on pydantic-ai migration
- Extract OTEL tracing and server mode into separate proposed tickets
- Use build_run_input() with forwardedProps instead of AGUIAdapter.from_request()
Add a proposed JIRA for building an end-to-end demo that teams can use
to evaluate the /agui endpoint and learn from as a reference implementation.

Walkthrough

The design documents define client mode as the default and server mode as the option for persisted history and compaction. They also update shield moderation behavior and separate implementation, tracing, and demo work into distinct tickets.

Changes

Widget-system design

Layer / File(s) Summary
Conversation and moderation design
docs/design/widget-system/widget-system.md
The design updates the request flow and endpoint outline for client and server modes. Client mode uses frontend-provided history without persistence or compaction; server mode loads and persists history and can compact it. Shield moderation is described as an agent capability, with blocked requests returning a text response.
Implementation and demo ticket scope
docs/design/widget-system/widget-system-spike.md
The spike separates client-mode endpoint work, server-mode conversation handling, OTEL tracing, and a local CopilotKit/Lightspeed/MCP demo into four tickets.

The documents describe different parsing approaches, leave the mode selector and several security boundaries undefined, and miss an E2E ticket dependency. Resolve these before the design is used to implement the /agui endpoint. There is no runtime impact from this change itself.

The title "LCORE-: Update widget system design" names the main change: the PR revises the widget system design docs. It is partly related to the changeset. It omits the ticket number, which is blank after "LCORE-", and does not name the key changes such as client mode, server mode, shield capability, or the new demo ticket. The title is not vague and is not misleading.

Explanation

PASSED. The pull request changes only two Markdown design documents. It adds no handlers, loops, API calls, list operations, caches, watchers, buffers, or executable code. The client-mode full-history and server-mode compaction statements describe future design behavior, not an introduced performance regression.

Explanation

PASSED. The pull request changes only two Markdown design documents; it adds no executable endpoint, authentication, logging, Kubernetes Secret, or deployment code. The documented /agui design explicitly includes authentication and authorization requirements, including Action.AGUI, 401/403 behavior, MCP auth, quota checks, and BYOK handling. No plaintext secret, token, credential, injection payload, or API/WebSocket data exposure is introduced by the diff.

Use one AG-UI request parser throughout the design.

This file still documents AGUIAdapter.from_request(), including the request-body note, conversation mapping example, and test guidance. The spike now requires build_run_input() with forwardedProps. These are different implementation contracts. Update all references so the endpoint uses one parser and preserves forwardedProps.

The claim that build_agent() adds shield capabilities only from its shields argument is contradicted by src/utils/pydantic_ai_helpers.py. When the caller omits shields, the helper falls back to all configured shields. An AG-UI call that does not pass shields still applies configured moderation. The doc snippet does not show an omission that disables moderation.

no server-side conversation persistence or compaction

Specify the forwardedProps security boundary.

forwardedProps is frontend-controlled and can influence model selection and MCP server hints. validate_model_provider_override checks only the Action.MODEL_OVERRIDE permission. check_mcp_auth probes configured MCP servers but does not authorize a client-selected server. Define an allowlisted schema and require tenant-scoped validation before build_agent() or tool resolution.

#### LCORE-5145 Implement `/agui` server mode conversation handling

**Description**: Add **server mode** to the `/agui` endpoint. In server mode
LCS manages conversation persistence — the frontend sends only the new message
items for the current turn, and LCS loads the existing conversation history
from the conversation store, appends the new items, and passes the assembled
history to the agent.

Add the server-mode dependency to the AG-UI E2E work.

LCORE-4577 requires conversation-persistence scenarios, but LCORE-4576 is client-mode only and has no persistence. LCORE-5145 is the ticket that adds persistence, while LCORE-4578 is blocked only by LCORE-4577 and LCORE-4576. Add LCORE-5145 to the E2E implementation dependency or remove/defer the persistence scenarios.

- Add a mode parameter to the `/agui` request to select client vs. server mode
- In server mode: load persisted conversation history from the LCS conversation
store using `threadId` → `conversation_id` mapping
- Append new message items from `RunAgentInput` to the loaded history
- Apply conversation compaction via `apply_compaction_blocking()` when the
conversation approaches the context window limit

Define the wire location for mode.

The design defines client and server modes and sets client mode as the default. However, neither document specifies where mode is encoded in RunAgentInput or how the request validates it. State whether it is an AG-UI extension or part of forwardedProps, and document the validation.

Scope server-mode conversations to the authenticated user.

Server mode loads and appends history using a frontend-controlled threadId mapped to conversation_id. Require the authenticated user_id for both operations. Do not use threadId as the sole access key. Otherwise, a caller who obtains another valid threadId can access or modify that conversation.

Shield moderation is applied via the shield capability integrated into the
pydantic-ai agent, rather than a standalone `run_shield_moderation_v2()` call
before inference. The shield capability is attached to the agent during
construction and runs as part of the agent's execution pipeline. If moderation
blocks the request, the model response is replaced with the violation message
— the client sees a normal text response containing the violation message,
not an error event.

Align the blocked-shield event contract.

The shield section promises a normal text response, but the error table specifies a RunError event. Update the table and acceptance tests to define one contract. Existing capability tests do not establish AG-UI event conversion.

Align the shield-blocking contract in the error table and acceptance tests with
the behavior produced by AG-UI event conversion; the capability tests alone do
not establish the emitted event. Verify whether a blocked request becomes a
normal text response or a RunError, then document and test that same outcome
consistently.
