feature: Groundwork for USB capture as a Picture service source - #151
Conversation
The option in Source, the decode task on core 1 writing each frame into beginWrite() then endWrite(), and the seam the UVC transport will implement. endWrite(w, h) publishes the size a source actually produced, since a grabber's smallest mode is larger than the picture a board holds, and abortWrite() gives the buffer back for a frame that never arrived. A desktop stand-in drives the source in tests; ESP32 and Teensy link stubs, with the capture gated on CONFIG_MM_USB_VIDEO so only the images that set it carry the flash cost.

Snapshot the capture size before starting the decode task.
runCapture() passes the live control fields to videoCaptureDecodeInto(), but prepareBuffers() sizes the buffers from the earlier values. A control update can increase the decode limits while the task still writes into the old buffer. The desktop decoder writes w * hh * 3 bytes without another destination-size check. The live reads and control writes are also unsynchronized.

With only one picture buffer, the decode holds the reader lock for the whole frame wait, so readers almost never get the lock.
When secondFits() fails, back_ is null. Then beginWrite() takes lock_ and keeps it during videoCaptureDecodeInto. That call can block for up to kDecodeWaitMs (200 ms), or about one frame interval at 30 fps.
endWrite/abortWrite release the lock, and the next loop takes it again straight away. As a result, Reader gets the lock almost never, and effects skip nearly every tick. The test pattern has no task, so it never hits this case. Boards with little memory are the ones that fall back to one buffer.
Fix: do not run the capture task without a back picture. Report the missing buffer instead.

Synchronize desktop capture test state.
setTestVideoCaptureDecodeFails() can write decodeFails while videoCaptureDecodeInto() reads it. PictureService::tick1s() reads videoCaptureStats() while the capture task updates stats. These plain fields have no synchronization, which can cause undefined behavior and flaky tests. Protect them with atomics or a mutex. Keep frame pacing and pixel writes outside the lock.
This is a desktop test-seam reliability issue, not a production capture failure. The correction is localized.

Enforce one owner for the stand-in grabber.
If a second handle calls videoCaptureInit while the first is open, both handles claim g_grabber. A later videoCaptureDeinit through either handle closes capture for the other. Reject a second claim, and close the grabber only when deinitializing its owning handle.

Provide an implementation before enabling USB video.
When CONFIG_MM_USB_VIDEO is defined, hasUsbVideo enables the capture path, but platform_esp32_usbvideo.cpp provides the six capture functions only when that symbol is not defined. The ESP32 build includes this file, so an enabled image has no definitions for the declarations in platform.h and can fail to link. Keep the capability disabled until the transport implementation is linked, or add the enabled-build definitions.

These checks depend on sleep timing and can pass even when the code is wrong.
Both checks sleep 80 ms and then assert that no frame was published.
- Lines 199-200: if the decode loop has not run yet, the check passes without testing anything.
- Lines 229-230:
prepare()→stopCapture()→stopPinnedTaskalready joins the task. The sleep therefore adds nothing.
publishedPast also uses a 2 s wall-clock timeout. The path instruction says: "Tests should not depend on timing or network."
Fix: wait on desktop-seam counters instead of time. In the refusal test, poll until videoCaptureStats().failed >= 2, then assert that the generation did not change. In the switch test, record videoCaptureStats().decoded after prepare() and assert it stays the same, with no sleep.
Line 216 is also weak: the format string always contains " lost". Assert the exact count instead, for example ", 0 lost".

The capture task waits for a frame without holding the picture, so with one picture a reader is only ever kept out for the decode itself. The desktop stand-in is shared through atomics, which clears ThreadSanitizer's race, and the tests wait on the grabber's own counters rather than on sleeps. - **Core**: PictureService splits the frame wait (`videoCaptureAwaitFrame`, 50 ms, which bounds a stop) from the decode; the capture reads the size the pictures were allocated at, never a control changed since; `endWrite` clamps to it; `tick1s` reads the frame size under the lock and names a one-picture run in its status; `kSourceCount` is the enum's own last entry; the unused `videoCaptureFormats` seam is gone. - **Platform**: the desktop stand-in uses atomics for what the test thread and the capture task share, opens for one owner at a time and closes only by the owning handle; its halving is a named step. The ESP32 and Teensy stubs gain `videoCaptureAwaitFrame`. - **Tests**: counter-based waits, a stricter status test (frames counted, 0 lost, Status severity), a one-picture capture test where readers still read, and the switch test proves the grabber was released. - **Docs/CI**: help.json regenerated; the width help fits 100 characters; an NDI comment cut to 250; code.md refreshed. The large-file rise (unit_MoonLiveLayout.cpp) comes from main. - **Reviews**: 🐇 CodeRabbit on MoonModules#151: size snapshot → done; one picture and the lock wait → done (the wait holds no lock); stand-in synchronization → done; one owner for the stand-in → done; `CONFIG_MM_USB_VIDEO` without an implementation → accepted, it has no Kconfig entry, so nothing can set it until the transport PR adds both; timing-based tests → done. 👾 Reviewer: the two races, the lock across the wait and the stop latency → done. ThreadSanitizer caught tick1s reading back_ after releasing the lock while the capture task swaps it in endWrite.
