The UVC payload headers a bulk frame still carries, the mode and rate a device is asked for, and the linear-light area average that fits a frame of any shape onto the picture. No hardware is involved, so the desktop proves all of it: 17 cases over the header lengths, the mode choice, the row stride and the averaging. The picture is now exactly the size it is set to, as the test pattern's already was. A whole scale factor left the right and bottom of the frame unread, so a bright screen edge never reached the lights along it, and the ranges now tile the source with no remainder. The desktop stand-in decodes through that same averaging rather than writing a flat colour of its own, which is what proves the path on the host and retires halveToFit.

@ewowi Hi! I also decided to split UVC PR into two because otherwise it'll take ~900 lines and 14 files in changes. After this work will be merged, I'll create new PR with hardware code and provide info about my setup and test it there. Current version of code is working on my end though |

Exercise stripPayloadHeaders for 2-byte and 6-byte headers.
The current test checks only headerLenFor, so a regression in stripping either header length can pass. Add the strip assertion for every supported header length.

Use present-tense wording while retaining the regression's root cause.
The repository-wide prose rule applies here, so remove wording about what the former implementation dropped or never read. Testing guidance also requires regression tests to retain a traceable root cause. The proposed rewrite removes too much of that context.

What's new
Step one of the USB capture from #139: the half with no hardware in it, so the desktop proves all of it.
Two changes to #151 worth knowing about.
The picture is now exactly the size it is set to, like the test pattern. Before, it was whatever an integer scale factor landed on — and that factor never read the right or bottom of the frame, so columns 630–639 of a 640-wide source never reached the lights along that edge. Three of your assertions moved with it.
The desktop stand-in now decodes through that shared averaging instead of writing a flat colour. That gives this logic a real caller on the host rather than leaving a header for later, and retires
halveToFit.One doc line.
adding-a-stream-source.mdpromised "nothing is copied". The P4's JPEG decoder takes no scale factor and writes only into its own aligned buffer, so a frame decodes there and is averaged into the picture. It now says "uncopied where its decoder can".The second part of hardware UVC transport and the JPEG decode will follow in next PR
