The callback is dropped whenever pageview returns early at if (!path || lastSendPath == path) return; (line 848) — i.e. for a repeated path or an ignored page. sa_pageview("/same", cb1); sa_pageview("/same", cb2) only fires cb1, so a caller that continues navigation from the callback hangs forever. Call callback() before that early return.

## Query parameter names

From script version 12 our script collects the **names** of the query parameters in the visited URL (for example `gclid,ref` for `?gclid=123&ref=newsletter`). Parameter **values** are never collected, and parameters without a value are skipped. This helps you see which campaign and tracking parameters are used on your website without storing any of their content.

Parameter names are only collected on the first page view of a visit, and they are not collected when you ignore the `referrer` metric. To turn the collection off completely, use the `querykeys` slug:

```html
<script
  data-ignore-metrics="querykeys"
  src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"
></script>
Ignore all metrics
To ignore all metrics that you can ignore, you can use this embed script:
<script
  data-ignore-metrics="referrer,utm,country,session,timeonpage,scrolled,useragent,screensize,viewportsize,language,querykeys"
  src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"
></script>
## Phone numbers
Do you have links to phone numbers on your website? Then it could make sense to see how many clicks you get on your `tel` links. The phone number from the link is used as event name (for example `phone_31_6_1234_5678`) and is added as `phone` metadata.
## Script
> This script is additional to the normal embed script. Make sure to also include [that script](/script).
Or if you want to change some settings (these are the defaults):
<!-- prettier-ignore -->
```html
<script async src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"></script>
<script
  async
  data-collect="outbound,emails,downloads,phones"
  data-extensions="pdf,csv,docx,xlsx,zip,doc,xls"
  data-use-title="true"
  data-full-urls="false"
  src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/auto-events.js"></script>

Leave phones out of data-collect if you don't want to collect clicks on tel links. Links that already have a data-simple-event attribute are skipped by the automated events script, so your own event keeps working.

### [`_docs/20_install-script/02_custom.md`](https://github.com/simpleanalytics/docs/blob/master/_docs/20_install-script/02_custom.md)

**Location:** `Section "Use custom collection anyway"`

Copy and paste this into the documentation repository:

```md
## Use custom collection anyway
There might be situation where you don't want to auto collect page views. When you add the `data-auto-collect="false"` attribute the script will not send page views by itself. From script version 12 the `sa_pageview` function is always available, also when auto collection is on, so you can send extra page views for ignored pages or custom flows. When you call this function, the script will send a page view with the path you give as a parameter. If you don't give a path it will use `window.location.pathname` as a default.
```html
<script>
  function saLoaded() {
    // Always check for the function before using it.
    // The script might be blocked or not loaded for other reasons.
    if (window.sa_pageview) window.sa_pageview(window.location.pathname);
  }
</script>

<script
  async
  data-auto-collect="false"
  onload="saLoaded()"
  src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"
></script>
<noscript
  ><img
    src="https://queue.simpleanalyticscdn.com/noscript.gif"
    alt=""
    referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade"
/></noscript>

Query parameters in the path

When the path contains a query string, the query is split off the path and handled by the same rules as an automatically collected page view. This means sa_pageview("/search?utm_source=newsletter&secret=123") is reported as path /search with query utm_source=newsletter, and secret is dropped unless you allow it with data-allow-params.

Callback

You can pass a callback that runs after the page view request finished. The callback is the second argument, or the third when you also pass metadata:

<script>
  window.sa_pageview("/checkout", function () {
    // The page view was sent
  });

  window.sa_pageview("/checkout", { plan: "pro" }, function () {
    // The page view including metadata was sent
  });
</script>

The callback does not run when the page view is not sent, for example for an ignored page or when the same path was just sent.

### [`_docs/20_script-settings/03_overwrite-domain.md`](https://github.com/simpleanalytics/docs/blob/master/_docs/20_script-settings/03_overwrite-domain.md)

**Location:** `New section at the end of the page, before "Noscript"`

Copy and paste this into the documentation repository:

```md
## Overwrite referrer
Some setups lose the original referrer, for example when your visitors pass through a payment provider, a consent wall, or a redirect service. From script version 12 you can tell our script which referrer to use with the `data-referrer` attribute:
<!-- prettier-ignore -->
```html
<script async data-referrer="https://example.com/campaign" data-hostname="example.com" src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"></script>

The value is cleaned the same way as a normal referrer: the protocol, www prefix, query string, and hash are removed. When you leave the attribute out, the browser referrer is used.

SDLC label: change: needs review because The v12 tracker changes what visitor data is collected by default on the always-served latest.js: a new query-parameter-name field is sent on every pageview and bypasses the existing utm opt-out, tel: link clicks are collected by default with the phone number as metadata, and the referrer becomes customer-overridable

Delegated click tracking double-counts label-activated form controls: a <label> fires its own click and the browser then dispatches a second, forwarded click on the labelled control, and both bubble to doc. With <div><label for="y">Yearly</label><input id="y" type="radio"></div> (or a label wrapping the input), one user click sends two identical plan_toggle events — reproduced against the built latest.dev.js, which logs target=LABEL detail=0 then target=INPUT detail=1. Any checkbox/radio/toggle UI inside a tagged element reports 2× the real conversions. Add a same-gesture guard in inlineEvent (e.g. remember the last element and clear it on a setTimeout(..., 0)) so the forwarded click is ignored.

Documentation update

_docs/55_events/00_inline-events.md

Location: Whole page, replacing everything below the front matter

Copy and paste this into the documentation repository:

From script version 12 inline events are part of the main script. Any element with a `data-simple-event` attribute automatically sends an event to Simple Analytics when a visitor interacts with it. You don't need to write any extra JavaScript calls or load an extra script—just add the right attributes to your HTML.

### Installation

Include the normal tracker snippet. Nothing else is needed:

```html
<script async src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"></script>
If you still load inline-events.js from the beta, remove it. The main script now handles these attributes itself, and keeping both scripts sends every event twice.
Tracking button clicks
To track a click, add data-simple-event="event_name" to any clickable element. The script never cancels the click: links, downloads, target="_blank", and modified clicks (Ctrl, Cmd, middle mouse button) keep working exactly as before, and the event is sent in the background while the browser navigates.
<a href="/pricing" data-simple-event="visit_pricing_page">See pricing</a>
Because the script listens on the document, it does not see clicks where your own code calls stopPropagation().
Tracking form submissions
Put data-simple-event="form_name" on your form tag. When the form is submitted, the script sends the event and lets the browser submit the form. Form validation, formaction, and submit handlers that call preventDefault() are untouched.
<form action="/signup" data-simple-event="signup_form">
  <input name="email" type="email" />
  <input name="password" type="password" />
  <button type="submit">Sign up</button>
</form>
A data-simple-event attribute on a form is only used for submits, and an attribute on any other element is only used for clicks.
Automatic metadata
Every inline event includes a tag field with the lowercased tag name of the element, for example button or form. Form submits also include button_text, the label of the button that submitted the form, with whitespace collapsed and truncated to 200 characters. Values that visitors type into form fields are never collected.
Adding custom metadata
Any attribute starting with data-simple-event- is included as event metadata. Dashes convert to underscores.
<button
  data-simple-event="select_plan"
  data-simple-event-plan="enterprise"
  data-simple-event-referrer="homepage"
>
  Choose Enterprise
</button>
Manual event tracking
You can also fire events from code using sa_event("event_name", { key: value }). This works before or after the automatic binding.
// custom event on newsletter popup
sa_event("newsletter_signup", { source: "modal" })
404 detection
404 detection is off by default, because confirming a 404 costs an extra request. Turn it on with data-detect-404="true":
<script async data-detect-404="true" src="https://scripts.simpleanalyticscdn.com/latest.js"></script>
Or with the settings object:
<script>
  window.sa_settings = { detect404: true };
</script>
When it is on, the script checks the page title and page text for "404". If it finds it, it sends a HEAD request to the current URL, and only when the server answers with status 404 it sends a page_404 event. The event metadata contains status and a url without the query string and fragment, so nothing from the URL parameters is collected.
* Preserve distinct manual pageviews in v12
Requested in the compatibility review: fix query-only manual pageview loss and preserve full path-overwriter input. Keep the filtered outgoing path and review campaign attribution separately.
Refs #107
* Preserve ignore-pages and hash routes for manual query paths
Address automated review of item 1: normalize the manual query after the path-overwriter callback and before ignore-pages/hash handling, while keeping its query in the duplicate key.
Refs #107
* Keep non-string manual paths compatible during query normalization
Address review of item 1: only split string path values, preserving numeric manual paths and numeric path-overwriter results without introducing an exception into the customer page.
Refs #107
* Preserve pathname-only input for path overwriters
Requested during review: keep the existing path-overwriter behavior without query strings, while retaining distinct manual-query pageviews. Restore query splitting before getPath and update the callback and duplicate checks.
The committed dist at this head is stale and no longer matches src/default.js: it was built from a tree without the inline-events commit, so every shipped v12/latest artifact (dist/latest/latest.js, dist/latest/latest.dev.js, dist/latest/cloudflare.js, dist/latest/custom/*, dist/v12/app.js, …) is missing inlineEvent, the data-simple-event click/submit listeners, the detect-404 handler and the keepalive path in sendData/sendEvent — grep -c simple-event returns 0 on the committed files and 1–3 after node compile.js. Running pnpm run test:unit against the committed dist fails 15 of 38 tests (all inline events); after a rebuild all 38 pass. Re-run pnpm run build on the current source and commit the regenerated distributions.
Create a separate branch from the current PR head, commit and push only that branch, and return its link so it can be merged into the current PR branch. Do not open a pull request.
* Respect the configured namespace for manual pageviews
Requested in item 3: keep namespaced trackers from replacing another tracker manual pageview function. Reuse existing namespace and pageview text variables to reduce minified bytes.
Refs #107
* Retain the free legacy manual pageview alias
Address review of item 3: older namespaced installations still call sa_pageview. Keep that alias when free, without overwriting another tracker, and cover both function names in the regression test.
* feat(auto-events): allow cmd-click to open in new tab
* Preserve browser navigation for automatic link events
User request: recheck whether PR #78 remains relevant, fix the current issue, and add the commits to that PR. Current v12 still cancels modified clicks and redirects from tracking callbacks. Use listeners without replacing onclick and reuse the existing keepalive transport; retain event names and metadata. Rebuild current bundles while preserving existing SRI files.
Validated with 41 unit tests, 12 deployment tests, typecheck, and 48 local click/transport scenarios.
Nit: the placeholder callback only exists to reach the keepalive argument, and sendEvent already turns a falsy callbackRaw into a noop (metadata is an object here, so the isFunction(metadata) shift does not apply). Passing 0 keeps the same behaviour and saves 11 raw / 2 gzip bytes on auto-events.js (verified by rebuilding and re-running the click check: sa_event still receives keepalive === true).
No test covers the actual fix: test/unit/auto-events.test.js only calls saAutomatedLink directly (outbound/download/email) or passes a tel: link, so nothing asserts that a same-tab outbound link gets a listener instead of onclick="…; return false;", that the click is not cancelled, and that keepalive is requested. Add a case that runs collectLink over an <a href="https://example.org/"> and asserts link.getAttribute("onclick") === null, no document.location assignment, and sa_event receiving true as its fourth argument — otherwise a later refactor can silently reintroduce the cancelled cmd-click.
This commit rebuilt only dist/latest, so the pinned v12 bundles are now stale while every earlier commit in this PR kept them in sync. pnpm run build on this head leaves 10 uncommitted files (dist/v12/app.js, dist/v12/auto-events.js, dist/v12/custom/{app,auto-events,proxy}.js and their maps). Concretely, the committed dist/v12/auto-events.js still contains t.setAttribute("onclick", "saAutomatedLink(this, '"+n+"'); return false;") and dist/v12/app.js still has defaultEventFunc without the keepalive argument, so a site embedding v12/app.js + v12/auto-events.js keeps the cancelled cmd-click and the 5s navigation delay this PR removes — reproduced by running both bundles in a VM: dist/latest/auto-events.js binds a click listener and calls sa_event(name, metadata, cb, true) with no forced navigation, dist/v12/auto-events.js sets the onclick attribute and binds nothing. Re-run pnpm run build and commit the regenerated dist/v12 files, or state that the pinned v12 artifacts are intentionally frozen.
Create a separate branch from the current PR head, commit and push only that branch, and return its link so it can be merged into the current PR branch. Do not open a pull request.
* Recognize Cloudflare challenge markers only in query names
Requested in the compatibility review: avoid path false positives and inspect raw query-only markers. Reuse the referrer helper without sending raw query values or adding bytes to light builds.
Refs #107
* Refresh the Cloudflare compatibility fix on current v12
Requested: make issue #107 mergeable while preserving manual-query overrides, browser-query fallback, and existing filtering. Resolve the older Cloudflare branch against current v12 source and regenerate its bundles, preserving inline events and the merged phone-click fix.
All 45 unit tests and 24 additional query payload checks pass.
Refs #107
* Use the requested simple Cloudflare marker check on latest v12
User asked to replace the parameter-name regex with a literal ?__cf_ check, omit the extra same-URL guard, and merge current v12 into #112. Preserve the latest modified-click, namespace, manual-query, and phone-click fixes. Rebuild matching tracker bundles while retaining unrelated pinned auto-events artifacts.
All 53 unit tests, 33 payload checks, changed JavaScript formatting, and diff checks pass. Manual-query overrides and location.search fallback remain intact.
Refs #107
* Keep the simple Cloudflare check working after campaign parameters
User requested a simple marker check and current v12 merge. Address review by accepting both ?__cf_ and appended &__cf_ with the short /[?&]__cf_/ expression, retaining the requested broad matching and omitting the declined same-URL guard. Update the existing regression and matching bundles.
All 53 unit tests and 36 payload checks pass. Current v12 remains included.
Documentation update
_docs/33_explained/05_uniques.md
Location: ## How we detect unique pageviews, replacing the "A pageview is NOT counted as unique when:" list and adding a short note after the two example paragraphs that follow it
Copy and paste this into the documentation repository:
**A pageview is NOT counted as unique when:**
- The referrer's hostname matches your website's hostname (internal navigation), unless the referrer is a Cloudflare challenge page (see below)
- The user navigates using browser history (back/forward buttons)
- The user reloads the page
### Cloudflare challenge pages
If your site runs behind Cloudflare with a managed challenge or "I'm Under Attack" mode, visitors are first sent to a challenge page on your own domain. After they pass it, the browser sends your own hostname as the referrer, which would normally make the arrival look like internal navigation.
To avoid losing those visitors, we treat the very first pageview of a page load as unique when the referrer contains a Cloudflare challenge marker (`?__cf_` or `&__cf_`). Only that first pageview can be counted this way: later pageviews, page reloads, and back/forward navigation stay non-unique. The referrer we store is still the cleaned hostname and path, never the challenge query string.
📝 Walkthrough
The tracker updates pageview, metadata, query, automated-link, and inline-event collection. The compiler adds an ES5 parse check and removes Cloudflare template handling. The repository adds deployment and unit-test validation.
Changes: Analytics collection and validation
Layer / File(s) Summary
Pageview, query, and metadata collection
src/default.js, test/unit/helpers/dom.js, test/unit/helpers/index.js, test/unit/ignore-pages.test.js, test/unit/metadata-attr.test.js, test/unit/metadata.test.js, test/unit/pageview-callback.test.js, test/unit/pageview-query.test.js, test/unit/pageview.test.js
Pageviews now support callbacks, query-aware handling, namespaced manual tracking, and updated referrer classification. Query keys and metadata are collected according to settings. Unit tests cover these paths.
Inline events and request delivery
src/default.js, test/unit/inline-events.test.js, test/unit/pageview.test.js
Tagged clicks and form submissions send events with attribute metadata. Keepalive event requests use fetch when available and fall back to image requests on failure. Optional 404 detection sends an event after a HEAD response with status 404.
Automated link events
src/auto-events.js, test/unit/auto-events.test.js, test/unit/helpers/dom-auto-events.js
Automated link collection adds phone events and uses click listeners for collected links. Tests cover phone, outbound, download, and email events.
Compiler, deployment, and repository validation
Before / after behavior
  • observed — Modified behavior in AGENTS.md: Adds the agent-instructions heading and requires reading shared Simple Analytics instructions through approved GitHub access, alongside applicable parent and nested instructions, with more-specific instructions taking precedence.
  • observed — Modified behavior in AGENTS.md: Adds tracker-change guidance covering shipped-byte measurement, preserving existing settings and integrations, avoiding speculative compatibility mechanisms, respecting browser-owned navigation and submission, deliberate data collection, ES5 output, light.js feature boundaries, generated distributions, and pinned-version/SRI stability.
  • observed — Modified behavior in AGENTS.md: Adds validation and review guidance: use repository-declared Node and pnpm versions and package commands; rebuild scripts before focused checks; prefer offline unit suites; follow shared testing policy; reserve the full BrowserStack matrix for CI unless requested; and keep PRs focused with dependencies and branch targets stated.
  • observed — Modified behavior in README.md: The contribution instructions remove the Cloudflare app from the list of compiled-script destinations; the CDN and custom domains remain listed.
Explanation
Issue [#97] requires public-script pageview data that can distinguish paid and organic visits without requiring query parameter values. The PR collects names of non-empty query parameters in compact payload field k, excludes their values, and supports opt-out through ignoreMetrics: "querykeys" and data-ignore-metrics="querykeys". The focused pageview query tests cover key collection, value exclusion, and opt-out behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The linked issue set contains only [#97]. The PR also changes phone and automated event tracking, bot detection, manual pageview behavior, Cloudflare handling, 404 detection, deployment validation, build configuration, and related tests. The summary also identifies changes cited by #107 and changes tracked in #41 and #42, but those issues are not directly linked here. These changes are not required to collect query-key names for [#97].
Resolution
Limit this pull request to the [#97] query-key collection and required tests, or directly link the issues that require the additional behavior and separate unrelated changes into appropriate pull requests.
- Line 123: Update the phone-link handling in the `useTitle` flow so extracting
the phone number does not depend on whether the event-name branch runs. Ensure
titled `tel:` links still populate `metadata.phone` while preserving the
title-derived event name.
Review comments at @test/deploy.test.mts:
- Around line 20-23: Update the version assertion in the header test after
latestVersionFromNames to compare the selected version with the version declared
in dist/latest/latest.js, and fail if they differ; retain the existing check
that a versioned SRI directory was found.
User requested checking unresolved comments with a focus on CodeRabbit, separate reviewable changes, and minimal shipped bytes. Extract phone metadata before applying the existing title-derived event name and cover the regression.
User requested verifying unresolved CodeRabbit feedback with separate minimal PRs. Require the discovered SRI version to match latest.js so an obsolete version cannot make deployment validation pass.
