feat(server): let custom Claude models opt into 1M context - #28024
Custom Claude models can declare Context Window and Thinking options, but the context choice has no runtime mapping and Thinking is omitted from query settings. Selecting 1M leaves the request model unchanged.
Change
Map a custom model's declared contextWindow: 1m choice to Claude Code's [1m] suffix and 1,000,000-token capacity. Preserve explicitly tagged routes and keep the provider's default capacity unknown. Compile model options against the instance's configured catalog so context and Thinking work independently.
Preserve context and supported reasoning options in native subagent selections, including inherited options and configured child-model overrides. Resolve child-model defaults with the existing settings-env precedence rules for both native launch paths. The composer summary shows the selected reasoning level while Thinking is on, Thinking when there is no reasoning selector, and Off when disabled, with the context choice alongside it.
Scope
Bare custom-model defaults stay unchanged, and built-in catalog profiles remain authoritative. This uses Claude Code's existing custom-model 1M support and the existing option editor. Arbitrary numeric context windows and new editor controls are outside this change. It replaces the configuration approach in closed#22318.
The instance-scoped Thinking compilation overlaps #22792 because the same compilation path needs the context mapping. This does not replace the wider live-catalog proposal in #16583.
Verification
351 focused tests passed across the Claude catalog, compiler, adapter, text generation, shared composer traits, effort glyph, and composer provider state. SDK-frame regressions cover explicit and inherited model choices, nested effort overrides, tagged and unknown routes, settings-file child-model defaults and precedence, both launch paths, and capacity accounting.
check:changed --concurrency 1 passed formatting, lint, both knip scans, GraphQL validation, nine affected typechecks, 310 adjacent tests, and the changed component's React Compiler check.
After merging upstream 7f443ab635 in f95a0d73b3, the upstream composer browser component test passed in Chromium. It verifies custom reasoning IDs, effort bars, option menus, and keyboard navigation. The merged build retains the compact Thinking labels, with shared cases covering custom reasoning IDs.
The web production build passed. Its entry assets exist, and the emitted JavaScript and source map contain the updated thinking-summary implementation.
Live Linux tests used the source server, real Claude Code 2.1.316, isolated T3 and Claude state, the existing ds-flash gateway route, and foreground native Agent calls. A transparent forwarding proxy recorded only sanitized model/protocol metadata. Child response IDs were matched to real child transcripts. Parent and child replies completed successfully.

The inherited child also retained the explicit Thinking selection. Its real request used adaptive thinking and low effort. Those inheritance runs match the adapter source in a1fd17a497.
A further real native-child run verified settings-file precedence against the final adapter source in 284dd5e65e. The process requested ds-flash[1m], while the isolated user settings file requested ds-flash. The correlated child request had no 1M flag, used adaptive thinking and low effort, returned HTTP 200, and completed both parent/child replies. Its stored selection retained low effort without forcing 1M.
At f0a124db79, verified the rebuilt web client with isolated state. Before the Thinking-only fix, its composer and accessible label showed only 1M. Afterward they showed Thinking · 1M, switching to Off · 1M when disabled. A model with reasoning choices showed Extra High · 1M while enabled and Off · 1M when disabled. The menu retained its explicit Thinking and reasoning controls. Captured the actual client states without sending a paid agent turn for the UI check.
Small requests verify protocol opt-in and metadata, not the gateway's maximum with a full million-token prompt. Real nested children, other gateway models, native desktop/mobile, other operating systems, and remote relay/tunnel clients were not exercised in these follow-up runs. Direct messages to provider-owned children are rejected by the existing guard. Browser captures are retained locally and have not been uploaded to GitHub.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Custom Claude routes can explicitly opt into 1M context, with matching request IDs, capacity accounting and independently applied Thinking settings. Built-in models and product defaults remain unchanged, keeping exposure limited to configured custom routes.

Walkthrough
Custom Claude model options now resolve through the instance’s model catalog. The adapter uses that catalog for query settings, subagent selection, and context and usage reporting. Composer traits now show disabled thinking and suppress reasoning labels when thinking is off.
Custom Claude routes with a declared 1m choice map to the [1m] suffix and a 1,000,000-token context limit. Already-tagged routes retain their suffix. Tests cover unmapped and missing choices. Documentation describes the contextWindow and separate thinking options.
Adapter catalog and subagent selection apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts
The adapter uses its custom-model-scoped catalog for model compilation, query settings, subagent model and effort resolution, prompt-effort prefixes, context-window lookup, and token-usage reporting. Subagent launches use configured defaults when no model is specified and preserve inherited options. Tests cover environment and settings resolution, context accounting, selection changes, and nested inheritance.
The composer displays Off when thinking is disabled and omits reasoning-select labels and the effort glyph in that state. Tests cover descriptor ordering and displayed labels.

Reproduced at 3a19fd with the source server, isolated T3 and Claude state, Claude Code 2.1.316, and the existing ds-flash gateway. The parent launched a foreground native Agent. Both replies completed, and the actual child request carried the 1M protocol flag, but its stored model selection lost context and Thinking. Claude reports that child as bare ds-flash, so suffix normalization alone could not retain those choices.
Fixed in a1fd17a497, then repeated the real run against the final adapter source. A transparent forwarding proxy recorded only sanitized protocol metadata. Child response IDs matched actual child transcripts. These live runs used no mocked provider or replay.

Both fixed runs returned HTTP 200 for the correlated child requests and completed the expected parent/child replies. The override control verifies that an explicitly configured child model does not silently inherit the parent's 1M choice.
Also compacted the composer summary in 42eec11a2e. Thinking on shows the selected reasoning level, such as Extra High, without Thinking On. Thinking off shows Off instead of the reasoning level. The context choice stays visible. Web and mobile use the shared display helper.

apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts:10136-10139 Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Invalidate sessions when replacing a provider instance.
A settings update can replace the Claude adapter while an existing provider session remains open. ProviderSessionManager.open returns that session before it looks up the replacement adapter, so the next turn can still call the old adapter.
That adapter captured the previous custom-model catalog. When the user adds contextWindow: "1m" and selects it, openQuery compiles the selection with the old catalog. The old catalog has no 1m suffix, so the compiled model ID remains the unsuffixed custom model ID. The existing query identity can also remain unchanged, so the query is reused without applying the 1M selection.
The request therefore does not opt into the 1M context window, and the session continues with the old or unknown capacity. Closing and reopening the provider session recovers the behavior because the next session resolves the replacement adapter. Close or invalidate sessions for every replaced provider instance as part of the settings reconciliation.

Preserve thinking for explicit child models.
Claude Code inherits the parent’s thinking setting even when the child selects another model. Here, explicit child models receive no inherited selection, so a parent’s thinking: false is omitted from the child metadata. Preserve thinking separately from model-specific context options. Problem
Custom Claude models can declare Context Window and Thinking options, but the context choice has no runtime mapping and Thinking is omitted from query settings. Selecting 1M leaves the request model unchanged.
Change
Map a custom model's declared
contextWindow: 1mchoice to Claude Code's[1m]suffix and 1,000,000-token capacity. Preserve explicitly tagged routes and keep the provider's default capacity unknown. Compile model options against the instance's configured catalog so context and Thinking work independently.Preserve context and supported reasoning options in native subagent selections, including inherited options and configured child-model overrides. Resolve child-model defaults with the existing settings-env precedence rules for both native launch paths. The composer summary shows the selected reasoning level while Thinking is on,
Thinkingwhen there is no reasoning selector, andOffwhen disabled, with the context choice alongside it.Scope
Bare custom-model defaults stay unchanged, and built-in catalog profiles remain authoritative. This uses Claude Code's existing custom-model 1M support and the existing option editor. Arbitrary numeric context windows and new editor controls are outside this change. It replaces the configuration approach in closed #22318.
The instance-scoped Thinking compilation overlaps #22792 because the same compilation path needs the context mapping. This does not replace the wider live-catalog proposal in #16583.
