Problem

A cancelled tailscale serve command can keep waiting in process cleanup if the CLI or a wrapper ignores SIGTERM. The same cleanup runs after the existing ten-second Serve timeout, so that timeout does not guarantee the call returns. Status/debug probes already configure forced termination, but the shared helper for enabling and disabling Serve does not.

Change

Reuse the existing 500 ms SIGKILL grace for Serve commands. Add a regression using a real Node subprocess that reports readiness after installing its SIGTERM handler. Exit code 91 marks fixture self-release on the broken implementation; the corrected POSIX cleanup kills it with SIGKILL. The added development dependency uses the existing locked @effect/platform-node version for that native fixture.

Scope and approval

This is a very small, focused reliability bug fix under CONTRIBUTING.md's obvious-bug exception. The existing timeout and cancellation paths must finish cleaning up their child process. One shared spawn option fixes both Serve entry points; the test and dependency metadata verify that same behavior. No public API, endpoint configuration, user-facing defaults or diagnostic suppressions change. Targeted searches of open/closed issues, PRs and discussions found no same-defect duplicate. #22900 fixes status/debug probes; #23605 fixes server retry scheduling, leaving this helper unchanged.

Verification

  • On the base implementation, the new regression failed: cancellation completed only after the fixture exited itself with code 91. After the fix, it observes SIGKILL, with no elapsed-time assertion or polling.
  • From packages/tailscale: ../../node_modules/.bin/vp test run src/tailscale.test.ts --config ../../vite.config.ts --maxWorkers=1: 8 passed, 1.11 s on Linux. All seven existing cases remain enabled.
  • Runtime probes through both public Serve methods confirmed cancellation kills the isolated SIGTERM-resistant subprocess. No live Tailscale command, configuration or connection was changed. Windows was not exercised locally.
  • vp run typecheck in packages/tailscale, changed-file lint and format: passed.
  • vp install --lockfile-only --ignore-scripts --frozen-lockfile --filter @t3tools/tailscale: passed, including supply-chain policy validation. The first offline attempt lacked cached registry metadata; the online lockfile-only check passed without installing the workspace.
  • vp run check:changed was attempted with one CPU, low priority and a 60-second budget. Its unused-dependency-patch check passed; the remaining repository-wide steps did not complete within the budget. Full CI is still required. The commit skips the local pre-commit Knip hook, whose preceding run in this checkout failed loading the web config because pdfjs-dist is missing; scoped lint and format were run separately.
  • Fallow 3.33.1 scoped review: low risk. Audit warns about a duplicated spawn/error-handling pattern shared with the existing probe code; no new dead-code or complexity findings. The xit( weakening hit is a false positive from the fixture's process.exit(91). The snapshot includes direct module consumers but lacks the full transitive graph, history and installed dependencies; validated anchors establish currentness, not correctness.
  • Independent GPT Daybreak Blue high review: APPROVE, no blocking findings or unresolved objections.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 7dca098

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Cancelled or timed-out Tailscale Serve commands now use the existing 500 ms force-kill grace rather than potentially hanging during cleanup. Normal command behavior and Serve configuration remain unchanged.

Walkthrough

runTailscaleCommand now force-kills cancelled or timed-out Serve processes after 500 ms. A live test verifies cleanup when the child ignores SIGTERM. The package adds the Node platform dependency required by the test.

Changes: Tailscale Serve cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Serve command kill grace
packages/tailscale/src/tailscale.ts
runTailscaleCommand now sets forceKillAfter to the existing 500 ms cleanup interval.
Serve cancellation validation
packages/tailscale/src/tailscale.test.ts, packages/tailscale/package.json
The live test interrupts a Serve fiber whose child ignores SIGTERM, then checks that forced termination occurs. The package adds @effect/platform-node for the test services.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the primary change: a cancelled tailscale Serve command no longer hangs. It follows the conventional commit format and matches the runTailscaleCommand change that adds a 500 ms forceKillAfter grace period. The change is small and focused, so the title is specific enough.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. Problem explains the hang when cancelled or timed-out Serve commands ignore SIGTERM. Change explains the 500 ms SIGKILL grace and the regression test. Scope and approval cites the obvious-bug exception and related issues. Verification lists focused test results, typecheck, lint, and format, and states what was not checked (Windows, full CI). The template's closing model attribution is present. The Scope section does not link a triaged issue. It uses an obvious-bug exception that the template allows, so this is a minor gap and does not block the check.

Bound the Serve cancellation assertion.

The fixture self-releases after five seconds. A regression that increases the kill grace to several seconds can still kill the child before self-release, so the current assertions pass. Bound Fiber.interrupt(fiber) to a value below five seconds and above the expected cleanup duration. Add this assertion to the existing live test; it does not duplicate the mock-based 500 ms option test.

Suggested fix
-      yield* Fiber.interrupt(fiber);
+      yield* Fiber.interrupt(fiber).pipe(Effect.timeout(Duration.seconds(2)));

Bound the `Fiber.interrupt(fiber)` call in the live `ensureTailscaleServe` test
to two seconds, so the assertion fails if cancellation cleanup exceeds the
expected duration and remains below the fixture’s five-second self-release. Keep
the existing child-exit assertions unchanged.
