hung tailscale serve commands can ignore sigterm and block cleanup. serve commands now use the probes' existing 500 ms force-kill grace, preserving command timeouts and configuration.

the existing escalation test covers both probes and ensureTailscaleServe. the standalone subprocess repro and its extra dependency were removed following merge review.

verification: blacksmith passed all eight tailscale tests and vp run check:changed github/main, including format, lint, both knip passes, five affected package typechecks and nine selected tests. live tailscale and client flows were not rerun in this pass; historical runtime evidence is in the existing verification comment.

model: gpt-6.1-sol. harness: codex.

pingdotgg#22900 fixed the probe paths and noted: 'The serve path
(runTailscaleCommand) has the same gap and is not changed here.'

This adds a POSIX-only regression against the REAL spawner: a stub
tailscale executable on PATH reports its pid and swallows SIGTERM; the
interrupted ensureTailscaleServe call must escalate to SIGKILL. It fails
against main's tailscale.ts and passes once the serve path reuses the
probe's 500 ms forceKillAfter. Skips on win32, where the spawner's
taskkill /F masks the gap.
The serve path spawned without forceKillAfter, so cleanup sent SIGTERM
to the process group and never escalated: a CLI or wrapper that ignored
SIGTERM wedged the spawner's cleanup on its unbounded exit wait, and
the interrupted serve call never returned. The probe paths have used
the same 500 ms grace since pingdotgg#22900, which noted: 'The serve path
(runTailscaleCommand) has the same gap and is not changed here.'

Completes that fix: serve commands now spawn with forceKillAfter set to
the same TAILSCALE_KILL_GRACE.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 0e42543

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Hung Tailscale serve commands now escalate to forced termination after a 500 ms cleanup grace. Serving configuration and existing command timeouts remain unchanged, keeping the change limited to subprocess cleanup.

Walkthrough

runTailscaleCommand now sets the child process’s forceKillAfter value to TAILSCALE_KILL_GRACE. The regression test calls ensureTailscaleServe and expects three recorded kill grace periods of 500 ms.

The change is likely mergeable, but a live subprocess regression test is recommended to protect the termination behavior.

- Line 35: Change the test declaration for “escalates a hung serve command to

time.
- Line 59: Update the test’s Effect.ensuring cleanup so it runs only after the
assertions, keeping stubDir and pidFile available through the timeout check.
Check whether escalation killed the process before running any fallback kill, so
the assertion observes the escalation result.

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified exact head e40593a394d6c17bf5f9430c542e9a71d91fbe8c on a disposable Linux VM. No source changes were needed.

  • Reproduced on github/main (b50d8a1b15) in a separate worktree, then repeated on this head. Both ran vp i and the real vp run dev server with Tailscale Serve enabled on port 8443. Only one dev server ran at a time.
  • Used official Tailscale 1.104.4 binaries, with no stub CLI or mocked service. Applied SIGSTOP to the task-owned daemon and then the real server-spawned tailscale serve child to simulate an unresponsive command that cannot process SIGTERM. On main, the child remained stopped and alive after 31 seconds, and the serve timeout did not return. On this head, the server logged TailscaleCommandTimeoutError after approximately 10.5 seconds and the child had exited and been reaped without manual cleanup.
  • The environment endpoint remained HTTP 200 after the timeout. Paired through the real web client in Google Chrome using repository Playwright, added the real checkout as a project, selected Codex gpt-6.1-sol, and completed a turn running pwd and git rev-parse --short HEAD. Restart preserved the thread, and a second real turn ran git status --short, confirming a clean working tree.
  • After resuming the daemon, normal server startup returned TailscaleCommandExitError with not-logged-in immediately. t3 pair --tailscale returned the missing-MagicDNS error without hanging.
  • This verification ran vp run check:changed github/main through Blacksmith: formatting, lint, both knip passes, unused-patch validation, affected typechecks, and all nine selected tests passed. Current GitHub checks are passing or intentionally skipped.

Not verified

The VM is not authenticated to a tailnet. Successful HTTPS serving, remote tailnet pairing, and removal of an active Serve mapping were not exercised. The hang was induced with real process signals; no naturally occurring Tailscale deadlock was observed. Native desktop/mobile clients and macOS/Windows behavior were not exercised on this Linux VM. This is a server-only change, so before/after visual comparisons do not apply.

current merge verification

merged current main without rebasing and pushed head e1c824e9d5b04ae48371cb4cc233f255c4478316 to the existing contributor branch without force.

addressed the merge review: removed serveKillRepro.test.ts and its @effect/platform-node dependency/lock entry. extended the existing escalates timed-out probes to SIGKILL test to call ensureTailscaleServe and assert its 500 ms force-kill grace alongside both probes. the final diff is two files, 10 additions and 7 deletions.

blacksmith passed vp run check:changed github/main: format, lint, both knip passes, five package typechecks and nine selected tests. the separate focused tailscale run passed all eight tests. two independent source reviewers approved this exact head. all 29 check contexts passed on this head, including the rerun native fingerprint check. github reports CLEAN and MERGEABLE with no conflicts. the three existing bot threads are resolved.

live tailscale, authenticated tailnet and client flows were not rerun in this pass. the historical runtime evidence above applies to the earlier head. no new runtime or ui claim is made.

Add a live subprocess test for timeout escalation.

The changed test only records forceKillAfter from a mocked ChildProcessSpawner. Its mock handle exits immediately, reports isRunning: false, and makes kill a no-op. The test therefore does not execute timeout cleanup or SIGTERM-to-SIGKILL escalation. A regression in either behavior can pass.

Add one POSIX-only live subprocess case that makes the child ignore SIGTERM, calls ensureTailscaleServe, and asserts timeout completion and process termination. Keep the existing assertion for option propagation. This is a test-coverage recommendation, not a production failure.
