Description

Adds the vllm runtime inference provider (VllmInferenceProvider) using PAI’s VLLMProvider, OpenAI-compatible model discovery, OpenAIChatModel / OpenAIEmbeddingModel, and clear failure for rerank. Multiple deployments remain separate registry entries by provider id.

Checklist before requesting a review

  • I have performed a self-review of my code.
  • PR has passed all pre-merge test jobs.
  • If it is a core feature, I have added thorough tests.

Testing

  • uv run pytest tests/unit/providers/inference/vllm/test_provider.py
  • Confirm PROVIDER_CLASSES["vllm"] registers and build/discover/create hooks behave with mocked models.list (no network).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for connecting to vLLM-compatible inference services using a configured service URL and optional API key.
    • Available models are discovered automatically. Chat and embedding models can be used, and model types are identified from recognized names; unrecognized model identifiers default to language models.
    • Reranking models are not supported.

Walkthrough

Adds a vLLM inference provider that builds a configured provider, discovers models and infers their types, creates chat and embedding models, and rejects rerank requests.

Changes

vLLM provider integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider setup and model discovery
src/providers/inference/vllm/provider.py, tests/unit/providers/inference/vllm/test_provider.py, tests/unit/providers/inference/vllm/README.md, tests/unit/providers/inference/vllm/__init__.py
Builds the provider with a configured base URL and optional API key. Discovers model IDs and infers their types. Tests cover configuration and discovery.
Model creation and rerank handling
src/providers/inference/vllm/provider.py, tests/unit/providers/inference/vllm/test_provider.py
Creates chat and embedding models from catalog IDs. Rerank creation raises ModelTypeNotSupportedError. Tests cover both behaviors.

Embedding models with unrecognized IDs need an explicit type override to work. Clarify and test that path before merging; also isolate the credential test from its environment.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 15 functions across 3 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Performance And Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

PASSED. The new vLLM discovery performs one models.list() request and one linear pass over response.data (provider.py:50-57). Model-type checks use precomputed frozenset membership, so each item is O(1). The code has no nested item work, per-item API calls, growing cache, or pagination loop. The catalog stores the bounded result of one provider model-list response, consistent with the existing OpenAI and Azure providers.

Full details: Security And Secret Handling

Explanation

PASSED. The changed production file only reads the configured SecretStr with get_secret_value() and passes it to VLLMProvider; it does not log or hardcode a credential (src/providers/inference/vllm/provider.py:38-41). The only key literals are dummy test values (test-key and api-key-not-set) in unit tests. The PR adds no API endpoints, Kubernetes Secrets, RH secrets, SQL, command execution, or path construction. Model IDs are passed to the OpenAI-compatible client as model parameters.

Already present in root dependencies, watsonx no longer needs litellm as dependency.

Review comments at @src/providers/inference/vllm/provider.py:
- Line 118: Keep the "llm" fallback in infer_model_type_from_pai_known_names for
unknown chat models, but ensure an allowed_models[].model_type value of
"embedding" overrides inferred types for unknown embedding models. Add a test
verifying that this override selects the embedding factory while unknown chat
models remain discoverable.

Review comments at @tests/unit/providers/inference/vllm/test_provider.py:
- Line 56: In the missing-key test that asserts `pai_provider.client.api_key`,
remove `VLLM_API_KEY` from the environment with `monkeypatch.delenv` before
constructing the provider, so the assertion consistently exercises the unset-key
default.
