Two types that packAny could already write but unpackAny couldn't read. Both turned up while porting the twitter and canada schemas from serde-rs/json-benchmark.

Fixed-size arrays

[N]T decodes from an array of exactly N items, and [N]u8 from a string of exactly N bytes, which is how packAny writes them. A different length is InvalidFormat.

Single-item pointers

A *T is allocated and unpacked in place, and a ?*T decodes nil to null.

Recursive types needed more than that. A struct holding a ?*Self made the inferred error sets of packAny and unpackAny depend on themselves, and Zig rejects that as a dependency loop. Recursion through a pointer to a struct or union now goes through a function returning anyerror, which breaks the loop. The cost is that a type containing such a pointer encodes and decodes with anyerror. Pointers to anything else keep their inferred sets.

This conflicts with #47. Once decode returns an explicit DecodeError, an anyerror from inside won't coerce to it. Whichever of the two lands second should narrow unpackPointerToContainer to DecodeError. The pack side has no explicit set yet, so it stays anyerror for now.

Tests

Fixed arrays round trip, the [N]u8 string form, a nil optional array, and a wrong length; a pointer round trip and a recursive node through ?*Node. zig build test passes on 0.16 and 0.17.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for Zig 0.17 alongside Zig 0.16.
    • Added decoding for fixed-size arrays and single-item pointers, including optional pointers and recursive types.
    • Types containing pointers to structs or unions can now be decoded and encoded with anyerror.

packAny already wrote [N]T, as an array of N items, or as a string for
[N]u8, but unpackAny had no case for it. Decode both forms, and reject
a length other than N.
A *T is allocated and unpacked in place. A struct that holds an
optional pointer to its own type made the inferred error sets of
packAny and unpackAny depend on themselves, which Zig rejects as a
dependency loop. Recursion through a pointer to a struct or union now
goes through a function returning anyerror, which breaks the loop at
the cost of a wider error set for such types.

📝 Walkthrough

Generic encoding and decoding now support fixed-size arrays and single pointers. The changes include optional null handling, recursive struct pointers, and validation of fixed-array lengths.

Changes: Generic decode support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fixed-size array decoder
src/array.zig
unpackFixedArray decodes byte arrays from string headers and other arrays from array headers. It handles optional null values and returns error.InvalidFormat when lengths do not match. Tests cover these cases.
Any dispatch and pointer decoding
src/any.zig, CHANGELOG.md
unpackAny dispatches arrays and single pointers to their decoders. Pointer decoding handles optional null values, allocates the pointee, and destroys it if decoding fails. packAny uses packPointee for struct and union pointers. Tests cover fixed arrays, scalar pointers, and recursive optional pointers. The changelog records the added support.

Decoding malformed messages into fixed arrays or pointer-containing structs can leak memory when a general-purpose allocator is used. Add cleanup for partially decoded values before merging, or explicitly accept the risk.

Recursion through a pointer to a struct or union went through a function
returning anyerror, to break the inferred error set's dependency on
itself (#53). anyerror does not coerce to the explicit DecodeError, so
decoding a recursive type no longer compiled. Return DecodeError there
instead; the pack side has no explicit set yet and keeps anyerror.

The existing recursive test went through unpackAny directly, so add one
through decodeFromSlice.

* Fail decoding with explicit error sets

decode and decodeLeaky returned inferred error sets, made of whatever the
reader and each type's unpacker happened to produce. They now fail with
DecodeError, and the slice functions with SliceDecodeError, which leaves
out the reader's failures: a slice cannot fail to read, and a value too
big for its buffer, which is the whole slice, is a slice that ends too
soon. That last one used to come back as ReaderBufferTooSmall when a
slice ended inside an integer wider than what was left of it.

* fix: decode recursive types within DecodeError

Recursion through a pointer to a struct or union went through a function
returning anyerror, to break the inferred error set's dependency on
itself (#53). anyerror does not coerce to the explicit DecodeError, so
decoding a recursive type no longer compiled. Return DecodeError there
instead; the pack side has no explicit set yet and keeps anyerror.

The existing recursive test went through unpackAny directly, so add one
through decodeFromSlice.
