What changes
GIF verification and embeds: Giphy share links and verified public HTTPS .gif URLs render inline. Media loads directly from its external host, without uploads, conversion, or provider keys. Verified redirect destinations can be extensionless.
GIF playback: visible GIFs autoplay and unload offscreen; reduced-motion users press Play. Loading, stopped, and failed states retain their dimensions. Stop uses a small accessible control. Failures allow two manual retries with the same URL; scrolling never resets the retry budget. Every playback mode uses the same HTTPS source checks.
Composer previews: commits, replies, and quotes show the selected link card before publication. Draft requests are debounced and cancelled when the selected URL changes; unavailable previews retain a fallback.
Draft endpoint and cache: authenticated requests reuse the existing URL-hash cache and UnfurlLink queue. Fetching happens in the job, and publication reuses draft metadata. New work and cached reads have separate rate limits; audit logs contain user ID and host only. Metadata can remain cached even if the draft is never published.
Unfurl lifecycle: recorded transient failures get one additional queue cycle on publication; definitive outcomes stay cached. Unique jobs, serialized workers, atomic retry claims, and generation checks prevent duplicate fetches and stale writes.
Shared fetch infrastructure: address validation, request budgets, HTTP transport, and metadata parsing move into focused services. Explicit NAT64 /32 blocking supplements the dependency's address ranges; bounded response reads retain the existing redirect and destination protections.
Schema and tooling: two additive migrations add gif_url, unfurl_failed_at, and publication_unfurl_retries. Existing test scripts and CI run the mutation gate; no new dependencies are introduced. Previously cached direct GIF URLs require refetching.
Test coverage added or extended
Giphy URL parsing; GIF content type, signature, header, dimensions, URL-length boundaries, and verified redirects to extensionless URLs.
Unsafe schemes, credentials, ports, private/mixed DNS answers, NAT64 and other non-public ranges; redirect cycles, shared deadlines, and destination pinning.
A real cURL fixture that ignores Range and sends a larger body, verifying a usable response with the 32-byte cap.
Draft authentication, validation, exact response shape, cache reuse, queue dispatch/failure, separate rate limits, audit-log privacy, and reuse when publishing.
Bounded publication retries, definitive cached outcomes, stale jobs, and real PostgreSQL/process concurrency proving duplicate workers fetch once while publication's foreign-key access remains possible.
GIF autoplay, unsafe sources across playback modes, reduced motion, visibility, Stop/restart, loading/failure layout, accessible controls, bounded manual retries, source changes, and stale callbacks.
Quote draft link/GIF selection in writing and preview modes; composer fallback rendering, debounce/cancellation, bounded polling, 429 retry timing, state resets, and stale-response races.

Screen.Recording.2026-10-21.at.12.38.12.mp4
The existing recording demonstrates Giphy and direct-GIF autoplay and Stop/restart; it predates the composer-preview additions.
Device verification
Desktop Chrome smoke after the upstream merge: the feed, restored composer draft, and posted GIF render with the migrated handle identity. The quote composer opens with the correct handle; the empty quote was cancelled, the existing main draft was left untouched, and no post was published. Earlier smoke verified Giphy loading in quotes and retention when switching to Preview. No new hardware/simulator mobile verification was performed.

Independent integration code review: PASS for 0b9d8dd0c5a5d6c5c271f91e4ec2a792628f0019, merging upstream 6fcefe85539b58168b5410e7eb24afe0144622ba into feature parent 5c02ed7804d5cf9074acd55b1a660c08f8c3d352. The merge retains the GIF playback guard and quote-preview regressions and adapts fixtures to upstream handles. Full visual review remains incomplete.
Limitations
Renewed base/head recordings across the required viewports and themes, layout-shift measurements, and mobile device/simulator checks have not been completed for this revision. The existing demo predates composer previews. Hosted CI has not been verified for this revision.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Link cards now preview while you write, and previews can be reused when content is published.
Giphy links and verified HTTPS GIF links can play inline with Play and Stop controls. GIFs autoplay while visible unless reduced motion is enabled; failed loads can be retried.
Bug Fixes
Temporary link-preview failures can be retried, while completed previews remain intact.
Documentation
Updated guidance for draft previews and inline GIF playback.
Tests
Added mutation testing to the test workflow.
Unfurl workers keep their row lock through DNS/HTTP to serialize concurrent fetches. Synchronous DNS remains outside the HTTP deadline; releasing the lock without a durable claim permits duplicate fetches.
When a GIF fails to load, "hasFailed" stays true and the Play button disappears. Could we allow retrying the GIF instead? A temporary network failure currently requires a page reload.

Walkthrough
This PR adds draft link previews to composers, support for verified GIF and Giphy embeds with controlled playback, and changes to link-preview fetching and publication retries. It also adds GIF security mutation tests to the test workflow.
Fetching now uses address validation, a request budget, bounded HTTP responses, and HTML parsing. Direct GIF links are checked for HTTPS, content type, signature, dimensions, and URL length.
Preview records store GIF URLs and unfurl failure state. Publication preparation allows one retry; unique unfurl jobs lock and check preview state before updating it.
An authenticated endpoint returns cached or pending previews and schedules new work after commit. Composer components request the selected URL’s preview. The client polls pending previews and handles request cleanup and retry delays.
Giphy integration #794 — Adds Giphy composer previews, but does not implement GIF selection.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 5c02e
Manual GIF playback may load an unsafe source in a narrow edge case; fix or explicitly accept this before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5c02e
Draft previews and external GIFs expand when third-party requests occur. The reviewed controls limit that exposure, and no introduced vulnerability was established. Deployment behavior and retention expectations remain partly unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — An authenticated account can initiate server requests to eligible public HTTP or HTTPS destinations without publishing content. Resulting records occupy the shared preview cache rather than user-owned draft storage. GIF viewers subsequently contact the external media host, exposing network address and request timing despite referrer suppression.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Every server fetch hop checks scheme, credentials, port, and resolved addresses, rejecting empty resolution or any non-public result. The HTTP client pins the connection to the checked address and disables automatic redirects. External GIF verification additionally requires HTTPS, image/gif media type, a recognized GIF signature, and nonzero dimensions.
observed — The browser GIF sink uses an image element with no-referrer, not an executable iframe. Raw draft GIF candidates do not mount that animation sink before an embed is available. Direct external HTTPS image loading already existed at the comparison base; server verification does not pin the browser's later DNS resolution or redirect destination.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The worker reloads and row-locks the preview, rejecting fetched records and stale retry generations. Publication can atomically claim one additional transient-failure retry. Completion and terminal failure writes require the expected generation and pending state, limiting duplicate work and stale overwrites. Deployed queue uniqueness and interruption recovery were not runtime-verified.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define retention and visibility expectations for URLs and metadata cached before publication. If indefinite retention of abandoned previews is not intended, consider expiry that preserves records still referenced by published content.

Validate source for every playback mode, not only automatic mode.
isGifPlaying calls parseHttpsUrl(source) only on the automatic path (Line 156). If playback is 'play', the function returns true at Line 153 without checking source. A manual Play or a Retry therefore loads a non-HTTPS, credentialed, or non-default-port embed.src. GifPlayback.test.ts asserts that these sources do not autoplay. The same sources do play after the user clicks Play.
Move the source check ahead of the mode check so one rule covers all modes.
Add a test case in tests/Unit/GifPlayback.test.ts that passes playback: 'play' with an unsafe source.

46-57: Trivial · Stability & Availability
The row lock and open transaction are held during external DNS and HTTP I/O.
handle() takes for no key update on the preview row. Inside that transaction it calls UpdateLinkPreview, which resolves DNS and runs up to four HTTP hops. LinkPreviewBudget bounds the HTTP phase to about 5 seconds. Nothing bounds the DNS call in LinkPreviewAddress::get(), because the budget is checked only after DNS returns.
While the job runs, the worker holds a DB connection and the row lock. Any writer that updates this row waits for the whole fetch. ShouldBeUnique already prevents duplicate jobs for the same preview, so consider one of these designs:
Claim the row with a short locked transaction.
Fetch with no transaction open.
Write the result with the existing conditional completeUnfurl guard on publication_unfurl_retries and fetched_at.
At minimum, bound DNS resolution with a timeout.
Based on learnings: "avoid holding a row lock (e.g., SELECT FOR UPDATE) or an open DB transaction/connection during that call."

Apply the existing HTTPS URL guard before every playback mode so Play

Codex-Thread: 01a15b08-d4ad-7e72-8725-b3ea1fde71ce
addressed the playback nit in 5c02ed7: the URL guard now runs before every playback mode, with regression tests and updated mutation checks.
could we keep the row lock in this PR? I tested the suggested short transaction against UnfurlLinkConcurrencyTest: it made two outbound requests instead of one; the unchanged job passes. ShouldBeUnique deduplicates dispatch, and completeUnfurl() guards the final write, but neither prevents two already-running workers from fetching after the row lock is released.
Moving I/O outside the transaction safely needs a durable claim and crash recovery. I left that redesign out of this small fix and documented the remaining DNS/transaction tradeoff in the PR description.
Adapt quote-preview and user-preview fixtures to upstream handles while
retaining shared GIF previews, playback guards, and regression coverage.
