Summary

GIF Vote https://dev-null.sh/@devjerry0/commits/01a17a2c-052a-73b1-ac48-892ce02c7626

Makes the existing unfurler use one deadline across redirects and reject redirect cycles. Extracts address checks, bounded transport, and HTML metadata parsing for the GIF work that follows.

Stack 1/6, split from closed #891. This is the first upstream PR. The remaining layers are reviewed against their immediate predecessor in the fork.

Changes

Diff against this PR's base: 14 files, +684/-197. 32% of changed lines are tests, fixtures, or test support.

  • App\Contracts\Services\PreviewLink defines one metadata method. HtmlPreviewLink lives under Services/PreviewLinkProviders; shared fetch helpers and their tests are grouped under LinkPreviews. The contract adds 11 net lines over the hierarchy change.
  • Keep destination validation and address pinning on every hop; explicitly pin NAT64 and special-use address regressions.
  • Bound response writes and preserve usable partial responses. Return typed metadata from the parser.
  • Includes a one-line frozen-upstream test-fixture correction (username → handle) needed to run the full suite after the profile migration.

Stack and merge order

  1. Fetch boundaries and service contract — upstream
  2. External GIF verification
  3. Inline GIF playback
  4. Cached, queued draft API
  5. Composer link previews
  6. Optional mutation checks

Layers 2–6 target their immediate predecessor in the fork. Submit them upstream in order after their dependency lands; each review diff contains only its layer.

Validation

PreviewLink now lives under App\Contracts\Services (namespace-only follow-up, head 04b59985d0c7600e78b08473c63c6027b600d6a8). Focused fetching/verification suites and the final stack’s required checks passed after the move; the earlier per-layer results and implementation review below remain the baseline.

Container checks passed on PHP 8.5.12: 4,550 PHP tests / 25,193 assertions, 100% PHP coverage and type coverage, 194 Node tests, and 613 component tests across 47 files. PHPStan, TypeScript, lint, and production build pass (19 lint warnings, no errors).

Commands: composer test:lint, composer test:types, composer test:type-coverage, full parallel Pest CI coverage at exactly 100%, bun run test:unit, and bun run build.

No UI or mobile interaction changes in this layer.

Independent review

Independent code review: PASS, base 6fcefe85539b58168b5410e7eb24afe0144622ba, head b2854ff863c6a3fd161fd27ee369ee7da077b6aa. Visual review is inapplicable to this backend/tooling-only layer.

Limitations

Hosted CI has not been verified for this new PR. Synchronous DNS remains outside the HTTP deadline.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Link previews can now display a page’s title, description, image, and site name when available.
    • Preview fetching follows redirects and handles missing or invalid redirect destinations without preventing the preview from completing.
    • Requests are bounded by time and response size, and previews are limited to eligible public web addresses.

Generic safe address checks, bounded HTTP transport, shared deadline, metadata DTO/parser and tests.

Walkthrough

The link preview action now uses separate services for address checks, request budgeting, HTTP fetching, and HTML metadata extraction. It follows bounded redirects, limits response bodies, and stores extracted metadata with the fetch time.

Changes: Link preview fetching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Address validation and bounded transport
app/Dto/LinkPreviewRequest.php, app/Services/LinkPreviews/*, tests/Unit/Services/LinkPreviews/*, tests/Unit/Actions/UpdateLinkPreviewTest.php
The request DTO carries the URL, resolved address, headers, body limit, and timeout. Services validate destinations, track a five-second deadline, pin HTTP connections to the resolved address, and cap response-body writes. Tests cover address ranges, ports, timeouts, pinning, and body limits.
HTML metadata extraction
app/Dto/LinkPreviewMetadata.php, app/Contracts/Services/PreviewLink.php, app/Services/PreviewLinkProviders/HtmlPreviewLink.php
The preview-link contract returns a metadata DTO. The HTML provider accepts HTML and XHTML responses, selects metadata text, and accepts only HTTPS image URLs up to 2,048 characters.
Request and redirect orchestration
app/Actions/UpdateLinkPreview.php, tests/Unit/Actions/UpdateLinkPreviewTest.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/UserPreviewControllerTest.php
The action uses the new services, tracks visited fragment-free URLs, and follows at most three redirects within the shared deadline. Tests cover redirect loops, invalid locations, exhausted budgets, and changed DNS answers. The feature-test fixture uses the user’s handle field.

Possibly related issues

  • Issue 1197 — The pull request changes the link-unfurling outbound request path and adds destination validation, address pinning, redirect-cycle checks, and bounded response handling.

Possibly related PRs

Suggested reviewers: simonhamp

Merge Risk: Low · up to 04b59

Most previews remain functional, but valid explicitly ported URLs can be skipped and some large or slow responses can fail after retries.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 04b59

The change preserves restrictions on outbound requests and tightens resource limits. No new security exposure was established, but recovery from real interrupted or oversized responses lacks complete confirmation.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A party controlling a preview URL, redirect destination, or served response can influence application-worker outbound requests and resulting preview metadata. The inspected authority remains application HTTP egress and preview-record updates; no additional credential or infrastructure authority was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing URL-to-network boundary remains validated-address-to-pinned-connection: orchestration obtains an approved address before constructing the transport request, and every redirected destination repeats that process. The supplied test sink exercises HTTP fakes and request options rather than introducing a production caller or identity transition.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The response sink limits retained body bytes, and each HTTP request receives the remaining shared budget. Synchronous DNS resolution occurs before the remaining-budget check, so the deadline does not interrupt DNS. DNS also preceded the HTTP timeout in the base; this limitation is not newly introduced.
  • observed — At the locked Guzzle revision, response-transfer and response-timeout exceptions inherit the ResponseException type handled by the client. Their distinct class names therefore do not establish a partial-response recovery regression. The inspected application test covers an injected ResponseException, not a real capped transfer.

Minor · Allow scheme-default ports in LinkPreviewAddress. · LinkPreviewAddress.php:45-47

app/Services/LinkPreviews/LinkPreviewAddress.php:45-47
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Allow scheme-default ports in LinkPreviewAddress.

LinkPreviewAddress rejects every explicit port before the HTTP request. This rejects valid https://example.com:443/ and http://example.com:80/ previews. UpdateLinkPreview then stores empty metadata and sets fetched_at, so the previews are treated as fetched without an HTTP request.

app/Services/LinkPreviews/LinkPreviewHttpClient.php:43-48
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve response-bearing Guzzle exceptions.

When LimitedResponseBody reaches its cap, Guzzle 8.3 can create ResponseTransferException. A timeout after response headers can create ResponseTimeoutException. Neither satisfies the previous instanceof ResponseException check, so LinkPreviewHttpClient rethrows instead of returning the partial response. UpdateLinkPreview then cannot parse the metadata, and UnfurlLink retries before recording terminal failure.

Handle both response-bearing exception variants at this boundary. The correction is local to LinkPreviewHttpClient; the retry policy does not require changes.
