feat: let organization admins choose its color - #1303
Continues #938. Since #1273 and #1302, the first member of an organization on GitHub to claim its page on /dev/null becomes its admin. With this change, the admin can choose the organization's color, the same way users choose theirs.
Every organization has a color. It is /dev/null's blue, the Commit button's --primary, until its admins choose one of the six lane colors or a custom one.
Where the color shows: as a ring around the organization's square avatar, as a dot before its handle, and on its link-preview image, like a user's lane.
Who can change it: only the organization's admins see a Color button on its page. Everyone else sees the color but no button.
Changes
Endpoint:PUT organizations/{organization}/lane → OrganizationLaneController@update → UpdateOrganizationLaneRequest → UpdateOrganizationLane. It validates input exactly like the user lane: one of the six lanes, a lowercase #rrggbb, or neither. A user who isn't an admin gets a 404, and so does a user's profile, since it has no admins.
Data: two nullable columns on profiles, preferred_lane and lane_color, which mirror the users' columns.
Why: to keep the color the admins chose. When both are empty, the organization is shown in the blue.
Who sees it: everyone, through the organization's page and its link preview. The columns stay out of serialization because Profile uses a #[Visible] allowlist, and the page receives the color as its own lane prop.
When it's deleted: with the organization, in DeleteOrganization. Syncing from GitHub doesn't touch it. It isn't personal data, so it stays out of the data export.
Default: a null color means blue in both places: organizationLaneColor() on the client (var(--primary), #3b6fe0 light and #7aa2f7 dark) and OpenGraphCanvas::PRIMARY (#3b6fe0) for the link preview, which is always light. Organizations need no backfill, and changing the default later needs no data change.
Picker:LaneOptions takes automaticLane: null to show Blue (default) instead of Auto. The user picker doesn't change.
Link preview: the lane is now part of Profile::openGraphImageVersion(), so changing the color draws the image again.
Knowledge base: says that organizations have a color, which their admins choose.
New tests/Feature/Controllers/OrganizationLaneControllerTest.php: saving a lane, a custom color or none; a lane replacing a custom color; invalid input including #1a2b3c;fill:red; 404 for non-admins and user profiles; redirect for guests.
OrganizationControllerTest covers the lane prop, which is null by default and never serialized on the organization.
CreateOrganizationOpenGraphImageTest checks the rail's pixels: blue by default, then a palette lane, then a custom one after a change.
Checked in the browser that, for an organization with no color, Custom opens the native picker on #3b6fe0. The user picker still opens on the user's automatic lane color.
Visual evidence
Local build, headless Chromium. @brefphp is claimed by @mnapoli, who is signed in, with no color chosen unless noted. Before is production at 6a4930e. After rebasing onto #1302, the org page was checked again: with an admin, Color shows and Claim doesn't; with no admin, Claim shows and Color doesn't; the dot is #3b6fe0 in both. The captures below still hold.

First load: CLS 0.0035, all from the aside's footer links (About, Apps, …). That's outside the organization page and this change doesn't touch it.
Device verification
Emulation only: headless Chromium at 390×844, 1366×650 and 1440×900, light and dark. No real device. The only changed mobile interaction is a dialog with radio swatches and a native color input. It fits the viewport at 390px with every option and both buttons visible.
Independent review
A separate reviewer agent that had no part in the implementation reviewed the code and the evidence. It ran read-only.
First pass, head a6bc689a: CODE: PASS, VISUAL: PASS.
Fix after the first pass: for organizations, Custom opened on orange instead of blue. Fixed in 11ceb1ad, along with docblock wrapping.
Fresh review, head 11ceb1ad: CODE: PASS, VISUAL: PASS, with no blocking findings. It also covered the new custom-color and link-preview captures.
Devices: mobile was checked in emulation, not on a device.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Organization admins can choose one of six lane colors or set a custom color for their organization page.
A color editor previews the selection before it is saved.
The selected color appears around the organization avatar, beside its handle, and in link previews. Commits use the selected color; organizations without a selection display blue.
Organization profiles can store a palette lane or custom color. Admins can update the color from the organization page. The selected color appears on the page and in Open Graph images. Blue is used when no organization color is set.

Summary
Lane data and rendering database/migrations/*, app/Models/Profile.php, app/Services/OpenGraphCanvas.php, app/Actions/Create*OpenGraphImage.php, tests/Unit/Actions/CreateOrganizationOpenGraphImageTest.php
Profiles store nullable lane and color values. Open Graph rendering uses the resolved value, with blue as the default organization color. Tests cover default, palette, and custom colors.
Admin lane update endpoint app/Http/Requests/UpdateOrganizationLaneRequest.php, routes/web.php, app/Http/Controllers/OrganizationLaneController.php, app/Actions/UpdateOrganizationLane.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/OrganizationLaneControllerTest.php
The authenticated update route validates lane or custom color input and restricts updates to organization admins. The controller saves the values and returns a success toast. Feature tests cover valid updates, validation errors, authorization, and unauthenticated requests.
Organization page and color controls app/Http/Controllers/OrganizationController.php, resources/js/components/lane-picker.tsx, resources/js/components/organization-avatar.tsx, resources/js/components/organization-lane-dialog.tsx, resources/js/lib/utils.ts, resources/js/pages/organization/show.tsx, tests/Feature/Controllers/OrganizationControllerTest.php, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
The organization page receives and displays the resolved color. Admins can open a dialog to select a lane or custom color. Tests verify the lane response, and the documentation describes the color behavior.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 2de70
Resolve the migration rollback behavior before merging to avoid recovery and subsequent migration failures.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 2de70
The new capability is limited to an organization’s public appearance. Server-side admin checks and restricted color values contain its exposure. No material security regression was established, but deployment rollback and concurrent-write behavior remain incompletely verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new write authority is confined to two appearance attributes on the authorized organization Profile. Its intended public effects are the organization avatar ring, handle indicator, and preview image. Shared user and commit image rendering is affected by a compatible helper-signature change, not by organization-admin authority over those users.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The client’s Color-button visibility is not the authorization boundary. The server checks authenticated-user membership in the route-bound Profile’s admins relation before writing. Request validation bounds the new input to palette indices or hex colors, which the page consumes as React style values and the image renderer converts to numeric colors.

Explanation
The title "feat: let organization admins choose its color" matches the main change. The changeset adds an organization color option. Admins can pick one of six lane colors or a custom hex color through a new Color control and a PUT organizations/{organization}/lane route. The color appears in the avatar ring, before the handle, and in link previews. The title is short, specific, and in a conventional commit form.

Every organization now has a lane color, /dev/null's blue until its admins
choose one of the six lane colors or a custom one. It rings the
organization's avatar, leads its handle, and colors its link preview.

Here we're hardcoding the permission check, that's because we're working on permissions in a separate PR, this should be refactored later to use a gate or policy.

It's weird to have 2 fields, but we're staying consistent with how it's implemented for users. Ideally later we refactor to store only the color, and merge both columns into one. but here we stay consistent with users.

For organizations, we're not using the random colors like for users. The reason is that users use avatars (photos, etc.) and so random colors make sense. Orgs use logos with one or two colors (often), so random colors is uglier. I tried gray, it's ugly. Instead let's use the primary color, at least there's a color but it makes sense with the rest of the website.

I was able to work around this issue by using the `onOpenAutoFocus` and `onCloseAutoFocus` events on `DialogContent`.
* Create a custom `DialogContent`
* Intercept the `onOpenAutoFocus` callback to capture the current `document.activeElement`
* Intercept the `onCloseAutoFocus` callback and invoke focus on `previousActiveElement`. If a `DialogTrigger` was used, radix will attempt to focus within their callback of `onCloseAutoFocus`.
This feels awkward and almost like it should be built-in, so I'm hoping 🙏 someone can tell me I shouldn't do this and there's an easier way. But perhaps, this isn't a common use case?
#### Custom `DialogContent`
export const DialogContent = forwardRef<
ElementRef<typeof DialogPrimitive.Content>,
ComponentPropsWithoutRef<typeof DialogPrimitive.Content>
>(({...props }, ref) => {
const previousActiveElement = useRef<HTMLElement | null>(null);
return (
<DialogPortal>
<DialogOverlay />
<DialogPrimitive.Content
onOpenAutoFocus={composeEventHandlers(props.onOpenAutoFocus, () => {
previousActiveElement.current = document.activeElement as HTMLElement;
})}
onCloseAutoFocus={composeEventHandlers(props.onCloseAutoFocus, (event) => {
// Return focus to the previously active element
// Radix will immediately follow this callback and attempt to focus the DialogTrigger if it's provided
previousActiveElement.current?.focus();
})}
ref={ref}
{...props}
/>
</DialogPortal>
);
});

thank you :)

curious about any updates here? this also feels awkward to me and i don't really want to be overriding default behavior that might be degrading the built-in a11y in ways i'm not anticipating. is this just the best way to handle this? </excerpt>

Restore focus to the Color button when the dialog closes.
The Color button opens the controlled dialog directly and is not registered as a DialogTrigger. Radix therefore has no trigger reference to focus after closing the dialog. Restore focus explicitly or render the button through DialogTrigger.

Update the Color button that calls setIsLaneDialogOpen to register it as the
dialog trigger or explicitly restore focus to it when the controlled dialog
closes, so focus returns to the Color button after dismissal.

Summary
Continues #938. Since #1273 and #1302, the first member of an organization on GitHub to claim its page on /dev/null becomes its admin. With this change, the admin can choose the organization's color, the same way users choose theirs.
--primary, until its admins choose one of the six lane colors or a custom one.Changes
PUT organizations/{organization}/lane→OrganizationLaneController@update→UpdateOrganizationLaneRequest→UpdateOrganizationLane. It validates input exactly like the user lane: one of the six lanes, a lowercase#rrggbb, or neither. A user who isn't an admin gets a 404, and so does a user's profile, since it has no admins.profiles,preferred_laneandlane_color, which mirror the users' columns.Profileuses a#[Visible]allowlist, and the page receives the color as its ownlaneprop.DeleteOrganization. Syncing from GitHub doesn't touch it. It isn't personal data, so it stays out of the data export.organizationLaneColor()on the client (var(--primary), #3b6fe0 light and #7aa2f7 dark) andOpenGraphCanvas::PRIMARY(#3b6fe0) for the link preview, which is always light. Organizations need no backfill, and changing the default later needs no data change.LaneOptionstakesautomaticLane: nullto show Blue (default) instead of Auto. The user picker doesn't change.Profile::openGraphImageVersion(), so changing the color draws the image again.Validation

It ran read-only.
a6bc689a: CODE: PASS, VISUAL: PASS.11ceb1ad, along with docblock wrapping.11ceb1ad: CODE: PASS, VISUAL: PASS, with no blocking findings. It also covered the new custom-color and link-preview captures.production0c612517. The only conflict was the claim logic inorganization/show.tsx, where both sides are kept. Fresh review, head2de7014b: CODE: PASS, VISUAL: PASS. It confirmed theadmins()check is right under feat: let only the first github claim make an organization admin #1302's single-admin model, and that Claim and Color never show together.Limitations
