feat: suggest the developers behind your stack when signing up - #1038
on sign up we now read the composer.json and package.json of your recent public repos and suggest the people behind the packages you use who are already here
when those say little because your work lives in an org's repos or outside composer and npm the repos you starred most recently fill in
for a week they show up in onboarding and who to follow as Behind your stack ahead of the people you might know
suggested and not followed for you since a follow lets that person message you in Remotes
try it with any github username at https://stack.binary.ly (same rules run in your browser against the public api)
Changes
DependencyContributorsQuery reads the root manifests of your 10 latest non fork repos then takes the 20 packages most of them use and finds each one's repo through packagist or npm and its top 5 contributors
when that gives fewer than 20 repos your 20 most recent stars minus your own fill the rest so it still asks about 20 repos at most and skips the stars request when packages already fill it
skips @types/* and stops looking after 20s keeping whatever it found
package to repo and repo to contributors are cached for a day so popular packages are free after the first person and repos too big for github to list contributors are remembered as empty
SuggestDependencyContributorsJob runs it for new users only after the follow import and CreateStackSuggestions keeps the matching user ids in the cache for a week
SuggestedUsersQuery puts them ahead of people you might know with a behind_your_stack flag and only runs its extra query when something is cached
Continue on the lane step reloads suggestions before the follow step like Save color already does
DeleteUser forgets the key and the privacy page and knowledge base explain it
left the privacy effective date alone like 76d1712e did
Validation
full suite with --parallel --ci --coverage --exactly=100.0 plus lint and types pass locally
mutation checked the 20s cutoff the url regex the @types skip the ordering the 429 retry and every step of the stars fallback
ran the lookup read only against real github packagist and npm and it found 60 github accounts behind my own stack in about 20s
an account whose work lives in org repos went from 0 to 46 and one whose stack is docker images went from 0 to 51 with stars filling in
clicked through onboarding locally with the cache filled halfway and the follow step showed them as Behind your stack in light and dark
read-only Claude agent: PASS on base f64c78f2 head 04135110 after two FAIL rounds that turned auto follow into suggestions
Limitations
only new users
a sign up can spend up to 22 calls of the app's github quota (repos and stars and up to 20 contributor lists cached for a day) next to the follow import
manifests only come from repos you own and only composer and npm so anything else shows up through what you star
if the job isn't done by the follow step onboarding shows the usual picks and who to follow catches up later
raw.githubusercontent.com can throttle the server and then the job retries a couple of times before giving up
desktop only since my browser wouldn't resize to a phone width
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Who-to-follow suggestions can include contributors to Composer and npm packages found in recent public repositories, along with contributors from recently starred repositories when needed. These appear as “Behind your stack” and are prioritized among network suggestions.
Suggestions are generated for new accounts and retained for up to one week. Lookups may return partial results after 20 seconds.
Bug Fixes
Continuing onboarding with your preferred lane now refreshes suggestions before moving to the next step.
Documentation
The privacy policy now explains which repository information is used for suggestions and how long it is retained.
The change adds signup-time suggestions based on contributors to packages found in public repositories and recently starred repositories. It caches matching developers for one week, includes them in suggested-user results, and displays “Behind your stack” as a suggestion reason.
The query reads Composer and npm manifests from up to 10 recently pushed, non-fork repositories, ranks packages, and resolves contributor IDs. Recently starred repositories can fill remaining lookup slots. Tests cover limits, caching, failures, and timeouts.
Sign-in by a new user dispatches a job that caches matching user IDs for seven days. User deletion clears that cache entry. Tests cover dispatch, caching, and deletion. The privacy text and knowledge base describe the data use and retention.
Include stack candidates in suggestions app/Queries/SuggestedUsersQuery.php, resources/js/types/auth.ts, resources/js/components/who-to-follow.tsx, resources/js/pages/onboarding/show.tsx, tests/Feature/Controllers/OnboardingControllerTest.php, tests/Unit/Queries/SuggestedUsersQueryTest.php
Suggested-user results include cached stack candidates, mark them with behind_your_stack, and place them before other network candidates. The frontend displays the stack reason, and onboarding reloads suggestions before advancing in the matching-lane case.

A permanently denied contributor lookup may leave a new user without otherwise available stack suggestions. The usual suggestions remain available, so this is a bounded issue to fix or explicitly accept before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to f0d83
The discovery flow has bounded work and preserves existing suggestion eligibility checks without automatically following anyone. One limited privacy lifecycle concern remains: an already-running lookup can recreate recommendation data after account deletion clears it.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: An already-running discovery job can recreate a deleted account's recommendation cache. The action retains the user model while performing external work and later writes the cache unconditionally. If account deletion clears that key before the final write, the derived recommendation IDs return for another seven days. Explicit cleanup and read-time filtering limit the impact, but cleanup does not dominate concurrent creation.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — User-controlled public manifests and stars can influence discovery work and candidate selection. Per-invocation exposure is bounded, while requests can consume the shared GitHub OAuth application's quota when configured. Deployment-wide admission and concurrency controls were not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The supported lifecycle failure requires an invocation already holding the user model to overlap account deletion: deletion removes the account and cache entry, then the invocation writes recommendation IDs back under that deleted user's key. This retains derived data until expiry; the inspected path does not recreate an account or grant relationship authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Package names and registry repository identifiers are validated before constructing lookup paths. The query passes no user access token to GitHub; the existing client can instead attach configured OAuth-app credentials to GitHub API requests. Raw-manifest and registry requests use a separate client with a user agent and timeouts.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Replacing the per-user candidate list after discovery and rechecking eligibility at consumption contain partial failures and concurrent last-writer-wins behavior to recommendation freshness. Those controls do not resolve the separate deletion-versus-creation race.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Coordinate cache creation with account deletion using a shared ownership fence or equivalent serialization that makes deletion authoritative over in-flight writes. A standalone existence check before writing would still leave a check-to-write race.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Do not retry every contributor 403 as a rate limit.
If one contributor request receives a permanent 403, this line aborts the entire query. The job then retries that request and loses contributor IDs already found for other repositories. GitHub uses 403 for permission failures as well as rate limits. (docs.github.com)
Use rate-limit response indicators to distinguish retryable 403 responses. Return an empty contributor list for a known permanent 403. Update the 403 rate-limit fixture in tests/Unit/Queries/DependencyContributorsQueryTest.php at Line 347 to include a rate-limit indicator, and add a permanent-403 case. Based on learnings, treat permanent 403 responses as non-retryable and do not classify retries by human-readable message text alone.
