Bet: the imported follows do nothing because nobody knows they happened. The follow step says "Follow a few developers" as if they start from zero, and the "X followed you" notifications from their GitHub followers come out of nowhere. Showing the import should:
give a "you're not starting from scratch" moment,
explain where the surprise followers come from,
lead into following more people (activation counts 10+ follows made yourself, not imported ones),
start a referral loop: the people they follow on GitHub who aren't here yet, with an invite.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The onboarding follow step shows accounts brought over from GitHub: people you follow who are already on the app, and followers who are too.
See imported follow and follower counts, matching accounts, and an invite option for people who haven’t joined yet. Counts animate as matching accounts appear.
A loading indicator appears while GitHub import results are pending. If no import data is available, the summary is not shown.

Walkthrough
Onboarding now returns GitHub follow import results, polls while results are unavailable, and displays imported accounts, counts, and invite actions in the follow step.
The controller returns up to five imported followers and followings with counts after the import timestamp is set. Factory defaults and tests cover unset and completed import states.
Poll for and present import results resources/js/pages/onboarding/show.tsx, DESIGN.md, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
The page polls for results, reloads suggestions when results arrive, and displays imported accounts and invite actions. The onboarding descriptions document the import.

Source follow suggestions from GitHub #1095 — The issue requests GitHub-based follow discovery in onboarding. This change imports and displays GitHub follows and followers in that flow.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1038 — Adds onboarding suggestion refresh behavior also used when import results arrive.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1157 — Changes the persistent GitHub identity source for users displayed from the import.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 3be23
A GitHub import that finishes slowly can leave the follow step without its imported-network summary until the page is reloaded. The invite prompt for GitHub contacts who are not yet on the service is a placeholder and does not appear in production yet. Neither blocks onboarding; the polling cutoff is worth fixing before or soon after merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3be23
The added response remains scoped to the signed-in user's network and uses existing profile-privacy controls. Polling reads results without initiating imports or gaining new privileges. Remaining uncertainty concerns asynchronous recovery and runtime behavior, rather than an established authorization or secret-exposure defect.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The added data exposure is limited to profile samples and counts from the authenticated requester's own following/follower relationships. The reviewed response path introduces no arbitrary account selector, importer execution authority, or credential-management capability.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The new invite action constructs static invitation text using the current browser origin, URL-encodes it for a fixed X destination, and uses noopener noreferrer. Imported identities and server-provided URLs are not incorporated into this sharing destination. Its pending-count gate is unreachable under the production response currently supplied.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Returned User records retain the existing serialization boundary, which hides email, GitHub identity identifiers, tokens, and import/onboarding state. The new avatar component consumes name and avatar URL; imported avatars are not navigation links. This conclusion rests on source-level controls rather than an adversarial payload test.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat: show GitHub-imported followers in the onboarding" matches the main change. The objectives say the PR makes GitHub-imported follows visible during onboarding. The changeset adds a githubImport value to OnboardingController, updates the onboarding page to show imported following and follower counts, and adds tests for that data. The title is specific and short. It names followers only, while the change also covers following counts, pending invites, and an import spinner. That omission is minor, so the title still describes the primary change.

Do not treat an unset import timestamp as a failed import.
OnboardingController::githubImport returns null until the queued job runs. After 15 seconds, the callback calls stop() and GitHubImportCard returns null. The import job allows retries with 10- and 60-second backoffs, so it can complete after this timeout. The page then cannot receive the result through this polling path, and suggestions reload only after a later response provides non-null data.
Continue polling until completion, or add an explicit failure state with a separate retry path. Do not use elapsed time alone as evidence that the import failed.

The follow step now says who came over from GitHub: the people you follow
there who are already here, and your GitHub followers who now follow you,
with counts that tick up while their faces pop onto the card. It waits for
the import job, and leaves the card out when GitHub brought nothing.
Pending follows aren't stored yet: the pending row is driven by a local-only
?pending=N override until the pending_follows table lands.
Tom's friendship is made at sign-up, seconds before the import, so it fell in
the import's window. The page now asks for the import from the first step, so
it has usually landed, and the suggestions refreshed, before the follow step.
