Description

Fix the Linux recording HUD menus being clipped and the toolbar changing position when a menu is opened or closed.

The correction covers microphone, webcam, and countdown options. It expands the available menu area while preserving the visible toolbar position, then restores the compact window after dismissal.

The implementation:

  • Uses local viewport coordinates on Wayland instead of unreliable global window coordinates.
  • Updates the window size on Wayland without requesting a new global position.
  • Preserves desktop coordinates on X11.
  • Restores compact bounds after dragging, including movement between displays.
  • Handles delayed and coalesced resize events during rapid menu interactions.

Motivation

The compact Linux HUD window was cutting off menu content, making some recording options inaccessible.

Expanding the window exposed another problem: the toolbar jumped downward when a menu opened and returned when it closed. On native Wayland, reported global coordinates could change even though the physical window had not moved.

This made configuring recording devices disruptive and unreliable.

System where the problem was reproduced

Component Environment
Operating system Fedora Linux 44 — KDE Plasma Desktop Edition
Desktop environment KDE Plasma
Display session Native Wayland
Architecture x86_64
Kernel 7.2.11-200.fc44.x86_64
Recordly 1.4.0
Electron 43.1.0
Node.js used for building 22.23.1
Webcam shown in the original report C505 HD Webcam

Native verification was performed on this Fedora KDE/Wayland environment. Additional regression coverage checks X11 positioning, dragging, and multi-monitor restoration.

Related Issue(s)

No existing GitHub issue is linked. The problem was reported and reproduced during local use of Recordly on Fedora KDE/Wayland.

Screenshots / Video

Before

The webcam menu is clipped by the compact HUD window:

Webcam menu clipped before the fix

After

The complete webcam menu and preview are visible while the toolbar retains its position:

Complete webcam menu after the fix

The after screenshot uses a generated camera stream for verification.

Video: No video is attached. Toolbar position was additionally checked frame by frame in the complete native Electron application while opening the microphone, webcam, and countdown menus.

Testing Guide

Environment setup

Follow the Linux prerequisites in README.md. For manual application testing, configure authentication according to docs/authentication.md or use an existing signed-in session.

Install dependencies and run the checks:

npm ci
npm test
npm run typecheck
npx playwright test tests/ui/hud-layout.spec.ts tests/ui/linux-capture.spec.ts --workers=2

Start the application:

npm run dev

Manual reproduction and verification

  1. Open the recording HUD on Linux.
  2. Drag the toolbar near the top of the display.
  3. Open and close the microphone, webcam, and countdown menus.
  4. Confirm that menu content is accessible and the toolbar remains in the same position.
  5. Enable the webcam preview and repeat the menu interactions.
  6. Open and dismiss a menu rapidly, then drag the compact toolbar and reopen a menu.
  7. On X11, also test closing a menu after dragging the expanded HUD within the same display and onto another display.
  8. Verify that source selection and recording controls remain usable.

Validation results

The isolated PR contents passed:

  • 1,614 unit tests, with 35 platform-specific native tests skipped on Linux.
  • 18 HUD and Linux capture UI tests.
  • TypeScript type checking.

The complete native Electron application was also checked on Fedora KDE/Wayland with the webcam preview enabled. The toolbar remained stationary throughout opening and after closing all three menus.

The Linux AppImage build completed successfully.

Checklist

  • I have performed a self-review of my code and addressed code-review findings.
  • I have added before/after screenshots.
  • I have added regression tests for positioning, delayed resizing, rapid menu dismissal, and native dragging.
  • Related issues and changelog applicability have been reviewed. No existing issue is linked, and no changelog entry is included.

Thank you for contributing!

The renderer passes the microphone's enumerateDevices() label to the
ScreenCaptureKit helper, which resolves it by exact comparison with
AVCaptureDevice.localizedName. Chromium decorates that label with a
transport suffix ("Shure MV7 (14ed:1012)", "MacBook Pro Microphone
(Built-in)", "BlackHole 16ch (Virtual)"), so the comparison failed for
almost every device and the helper silently recorded the system default
input instead. With the lid closed that default is the built-in mic,
which delivers digital silence, so recordings came out without a voice.

Try the raw label first, then the label without its trailing
parenthetical.

Resolve the microphone by exact label, then by a device ID that names a
real capture device, and only then by the label without Chromium's
transport suffix, so the name heuristic cannot override a precise
identifier.

Move the matching into a pure function and replace the source-text
assertions with a test that compiles it with swiftc and checks the
results against a fixed device list, following the lifecycle test.

📝 Walkthrough

The HUD overlay now reports Linux window-system details and coordinates fallback menu resizing with renderer drag anchoring. Electron tracks compact and expanded bounds. The launch UI signals popover state and preserves the bar position across native resize events. Tests cover X11 and Wayland cases.

Changes: Linux HUD menu resize and position

Layer / File(s) Summary
Window-system detection contract
electron/electron-env.d.ts, electron/linuxWindowSystem.ts, electron/linuxWindowSystem.test.ts
The Electron API adds the HUD window-system result and menu-state method. Linux detection uses the Ozone platform when it is wayland or x11, with session-environment detection as fallback.
Electron fallback resizing
electron/hudOverlayBounds.ts, electron/hudOverlayBounds.test.ts, electron/preload.ts, electron/windows.ts
Electron tracks compact and expanded bounds and handles menu-open IPC. Fallback resizing preserves position across expansion and contraction. Wayland updates window dimensions without setting a global origin.
Renderer menu and drag anchoring
src/components/launch/LaunchWindow.tsx, src/components/launch/hooks/useHudBarDrag.ts, src/components/launch/hooks/useLaunchWindowSystemState.ts, src/components/launch/popovers/LaunchPopoverCoordinator.tsx, tests/ui/bridge.ts, tests/ui/hud-layout.spec.ts
The launch UI passes window-system and menu state to the drag hook. The hook anchors the bar across viewport changes. UI tests cover X11 and Wayland resizing, menu dismissal, and native dragging.

On Wayland, opening a menu immediately after launch can make the toolbar shift during resizing. Rebase the anchor when window-system detection completes; the risk is limited to this timing case.

Rebase the anchor when the coordinate mode changes.

When useLocalCoordinates changes while the menu stays open, the layout effect returns early. The anchor keeps local: false. A later Wayland resize then uses screen coordinates for an anchor captured before the mode change. The toolbar can shift when the reported window origin changes.

Track the coordinate-mode change and recapture or invalidate the existing anchor before the resize.
