The renderer passes the microphone's enumerateDevices() label to the
ScreenCaptureKit helper, which resolves it by exact comparison with
AVCaptureDevice.localizedName. Chromium decorates that label with a
transport suffix ("Shure MV7 (14ed:1012)", "MacBook Pro Microphone
(Built-in)", "BlackHole 16ch (Virtual)"), so the comparison failed for
almost every device and the helper silently recorded the system default
input instead. With the lid closed that default is the built-in mic,
which delivers digital silence, so recordings came out without a voice.
Try the raw label first, then the label without its trailing
parenthetical.

Resolve the microphone by exact label, then by a device ID that names a real capture device, and only then by the label without Chromium's transport suffix, so the name heuristic cannot override a precise identifier. Move the matching into a pure function and replace the source-text assertions with a test that compiles it with swiftc and checks the results against a fixed device list, following the lifecycle test. extendLastFrameToLocked filled every gap between captured frames with one duplicate sample per frame interval, so the encoder always had to process a full fps worth of samples. When the Media Foundation encoder runs slower than real time (e.g. Intel HD 4600 shared with Recordly's own windows), WriteSample blocks, the next gap grows, and the backlog grows linearly with recording length. On stop it has to drain before the helper exits, so recordings longer than ~45s hit "Timed out waiting for native Windows capture to stop". Cover each gap with a single repeated sample whose duration spans the gap. Timeline duration is preserved; encoder load now scales with delivered frames. Measured on i5-4590 / HD 4600, 1920x1040 window capture in-app: - before: ~65s recording, stop >45s, killed, MP4 unfinalized - after: 90s recording, stop ~12s, duration 89.9s Note: bundled wgc-capture.exe and helpers-manifest.json not rebuilt (no CMake). 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Cover fractional frame gaps.
If timestampHns is 1.5 frame durations after lastSampleTimeHns_, gapFrames is zero and this branch writes no repeated sample. Larger gaps also leave their fractional remainder uncovered. A final extendLastFrameTo call can therefore leave the recording shorter than the requested end time. Write one sample for the full positive gap, and track its covered end when subsequent extensions occur. A Media Foundation sample’s duration specifies how long it should be rendered. Description
On Windows machines where the encoder can't keep up in real time, stopping a recording takes about as long as the recording itself. Past roughly 45 seconds that hits
WINDOWS_CAPTURE_STOP_TIMEOUT_MS. The helper gets killed before the MP4 is finalized, and the user sees:and loses the whole recording.
This PR changes how
wgc-capturefills gaps between captured frames, so the encoder no longer builds up a backlog.Motivation
MFEncoder::extendLastFrameToLocked(added in 6227eb8 to keep duration correct when WGC stops delivering frames on static content) fills every gap with one duplicate sample per frame interval. The encoder therefore has to process a full 60 fps worth of samples no matter how many frames WGC actually delivered. When the Media Foundation H.264 encoder is slower than real time (in my case an Intel HD 4600 whose GPU is shared with Recordly's own windows), this snowballs:
WriteSampleblocks, so the WGC frame callback stalls.extendLastFrameTo(stop)plusFinalize()have to drain all of it before the helper exits.Per-second monitoring of the helper during a failing in-app recording showed exactly this. After stop, helper CPU dropped to 0% while the temp MP4 kept growing at the same rate for 45 s, until the timeout killed it with no
moovatom written.Fix
Cover each gap with a single repeated sample whose duration spans the gap (same frame count arithmetic as the old loop, so the timeline end is identical). Duration is preserved, and encoder load now scales with the frames actually delivered. On slow hardware the output simply ends up with a lower effective frame rate instead of an unbounded backlog.

Tested on Windows 10 22H2, i5-4590, Intel HD 4600, 1920x1040 window capture @ 60 fps, inside the installed app:
Standalone runs of the helper (where the encoder keeps up) show identical duration and frame count before/after, and stop in ~0.5 s either way.
Testing Guide
ffprobe -show_entries format=duration).Note for maintainers
I built and tested the helper with MSVC directly because CMake isn't available on my machine. The bundled
electron/native/bin/win32-x64/wgc-capture.exeandhelpers-manifest.jsonare not updated in this PR. They need a rebuild vianpm run build:windows-capture.Checklist
