Description

Add Debian packages for Linux amd64 and arm64 alongside the existing x64 AppImage. The release workflow builds each architecture on a native runner, checks the package architecture, and includes both packages in release checksums and attestations.

Add a curl | sh download script that detects the architecture, fetches the latest stable release (or a specified tag), verifies its SHA-256 checksum, and prints the installation command. Document the workflow in the README.

Motivation

Debian and Ubuntu users currently have an AppImage but no release package they can install with apt. A verified download command makes the appropriate package easier to obtain without cloning the repository.

Type of Change

None identified.

Not applicable; this change affects packaging and command-line downloads.

Testing Guide

  • Passed sh -n scripts/download-deb.sh and git diff --check.
  • Exercised the script through standard input with mocked release downloads for x86_64, amd64, aarch64, and arm64, including a pinned tag, unsupported architecture, existing destination, and a tampered package. Verified the release checksum script includes .deb files.
  • Parsed both modified GitHub Actions workflows as YAML.
  • The .deb builds, installation, application launch, and AppImage update metadata have not yet been tested end to end. Local dependency installation could not complete because a package was absent from the offline npm cache. The build workflow now checks each package's architecture and runs the existing packaged-binary smoke test; please verify both Linux jobs and perform install/launch testing on amd64 and arm64 before release.

Checklist

  • I have performed a self-review of my code.
  • I have added any necessary screenshots or videos. (Not applicable.)
  • I have linked related issue(s) and updated the changelog if applicable. (None identified; README updated.)

Add source selection and authenticated account and permission settings
The renderer passes the microphone's enumerateDevices() label to the
ScreenCaptureKit helper, which resolves it by exact comparison with
AVCaptureDevice.localizedName. Chromium decorates that label with a
transport suffix ("Shure MV7 (14ed:1012)", "MacBook Pro Microphone
(Built-in)", "BlackHole 16ch (Virtual)"), so the comparison failed for
almost every device and the helper silently recorded the system default
input instead. With the lid closed that default is the built-in mic,
which delivers digital silence, so recordings came out without a voice.

Try the raw label first, then the label without its trailing
parenthetical.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Resolve the microphone by exact label, then by a device ID that names a
real capture device, and only then by the label without Chromium's
transport suffix, so the name heuristic cannot override a precise
identifier.

Move the matching into a pure function and replace the source-text
assertions with a test that compiles it with swiftc and checks the
results against a fixed device list, following the lifecycle test.

📝 Walkthrough

Linux build and release workflows now create Debian packages for x64 and arm64, verify and smoke-test them, and stage them for release. A new script downloads and verifies a package. The README documents Debian and Ubuntu installation.

Changes: Linux Debian packages

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and build Linux packages
electron-builder.json5, .github/workflows/build.yml, scripts/smoke-installed-deb.sh
Linux packaging targets Debian packages with architecture-specific artifact names. The build workflow checks package architecture, smoke-tests installed packages, and uploads packages for x64 and arm64.
Build and publish release packages
.github/workflows/release.yml, scripts/write-release-checksums.mjs
The release workflow builds and verifies x64 and arm64 packages. Publishing requires the arm64 build to succeed, stages both packages, and checks that both are present. Checksum generation includes .deb files.
Download and verify a package
scripts/download-deb.sh, README.md
The script selects the matching package for supported Linux architectures, downloads it with the checksum list, and verifies it before saving it. The README documents Debian and Ubuntu installation using the script.

Map x64 to amd64 for Debian artifact names.

electron-builder@26.7.0 expands ${arch} to amd64 for x64 Debian packages and x86_64 for x64 AppImages. The x64 build checks, release staging check, and scripts/download-deb.sh use Recordly-linux-x64.deb. These paths can fail because the generated Debian artifact is Recordly-linux-amd64.deb.

Map only Debian x64 references to Recordly-linux-amd64.deb; keep arm64 as Recordly-linux-arm64.deb. AppImage consumers use globs and generated latest-linux.yml metadata, and no consumer depends on the old exact Recordly-linux-x64.AppImage name.

Update the Debian package artifactName configuration so x64 produces the amd64
filename and arm64 remains arm64; keep AppImage naming unchanged.

Add an email address to the Debian maintainer field.

webadderall does not meet Debian’s Maintainer field format. Debian requires a name followed by an email address in angle brackets. Use a working maintainer address so the package has valid contact metadata. (debian.org)

title  | Linux

{!./partials/_upgrading-from-v26.md!}

The top-level linux key contains a set of options instructing electron-builder on how it should build Linux targets. These options are applicable to any Linux target.

## Linux Target Overview

electron-builder supports a wide range of Linux package formats. Choose based on your target audience and distribution method:

Target | Format | Best For | Distro Support
--- | --- | --- | ---
`AppImage` | Single file | Broad compatibility, no install | Universal
`deb`  | Debian package  | Ubuntu, Debian, Mint  | Debian-based
`rpm`  | RPM package  | Fedora, RHEL, openSUSE  | Red Hat-based
`snap`  | Snap package  | Ubuntu-primary  | Any (snapd required)
`flatpak`  | Flatpak  | Cross-distro sandboxed  | Any (flatpak required)
`pacman`  | Arch package  | Arch Linux, Manjaro  | Arch-based
`apk` | Alpine package | Alpine Linux, containers | Alpine
`freebsd`  | FreeBSD pkg  | FreeBSD  | FreeBSD
`p5p`  | Solaris IPS  | Solaris, illumos  | Solaris-based
## Debian Package (`deb`)

The `deb` target creates a `.deb` package installable via `apt` on Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, and other Debian-based distributions.

    deb:
      depends:
        - libgtk-3-0
        - libnotify4
        - libnss3
        - libxss1
        - libxtst6
        - xdg-utils
        - libatspi2.0-0
        - libuuid1
        - libsecret-1-0
      recommends:
        - libappindicator3-1    # system tray support
      packageCategory: utils
      priority: optional

Common `depends` packages for Electron apps:

  * `libgtk-3-0` — GTK3 (required)
  * `libnotify4` — desktop notifications
  * `libnss3` — NSS (Chromium networking)
  * `libxss1` — screen saver extension
  * `libxtst6` — X test extension
  * `xdg-utils` — desktop integration utilities
  * `libatspi2.0-0` — accessibility
  * `libuuid1` — UUID support
  * `libsecret-1-0` — keychain/Secret Service

Priority values: `required`, `important`, `standard`, `optional` (use `optional` for most apps)

## RPM Package (`rpm`)

The DEB, RPM, Pacman, APK, FreeBSD, and P5P targets are built using FPM internally. Pass additional FPM command-line arguments:

    deb:
      fpm:
        - "--deb-changelog=CHANGELOG.md"
        - "--deb-no-default-config-files"

## AppArmor Profile (Ubuntu 24+)

Ubuntu 24.04 introduced mandatory AppArmor profiles for application sandboxing. Specify a custom profile:

    deb:
      appArmorProfile: build/apparmor-profile

Without a profile, the app may be restricted by Ubuntu's default profile. See the AppArmor documentation for profile syntax.

## Base Linux Configuration

{!./app-builder-lib.Interface.LinuxConfiguration.md!}

## Debian Package Options

The top-level deb key contains a set of options for Debian packages.

{!./app-builder-lib.Interface.DebOptions.md!}

All LinuxTargetSpecificOptions can also be specified in `deb` to customize Debian packages.

## `LinuxTargetSpecificOptions` — APK, FreeBSD, Pacman, P5P and RPM Options {#linuxtargetspecificoptions-apk-freebsd-pacman-p5p-and-rpm-options}

The top-level `apk`, `freebsd`, `pacman`, `p5p` and `rpm` keys contain options for their respective Linux targets.

When `true`, the installed `.desktop` filename is derived from `desktopName` in `package.json` (minus the `.desktop` suffix) so that it matches `StartupWMClass` and Electron's `app_id`. ... Without the flag the filename continues to use `executableName` (the current default, preserved for backwards compatibility).

v27

`syncDesktopName` will default to `true` in v27. If you rely on the current behaviour, set it explicitly to `false`.

warning

`desktopName` is required for reliable window association

If `desktopName` is absent, electron-builder will log a warning at build time. Without it, desktop environments on GNOME, KDE, and others may not correctly link the running application window to its launcher entry.

See the freedesktop.org specification for all valid keys.

## Icon Configuration

Provide a directory of PNG icons named with their size:

    `

    linux:

      icon: build/icons/

    `

Files must be named `NxN.png` (e.g., `256x256.png`, `512x512.png`). If not specified, electron-builder auto-generates Linux icons from the macOS `.icns` file (if present) or the Windows `.ico` file.

Recommended sizes: 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 96, 128, 256, 512 pixels.

Check the installed launcher, not the package file list.

electron-builder 26.7.0 creates /usr/bin/recordly during Debian post-installation. dpkg-query -L recordly reports package payload files and does not include that generated link. This check can fail after a successful installation and block both Linux jobs before launch. Line 13 already checks that the launcher is executable. Remove line 12.

Review comment at @scripts/smoke-installed-deb.sh at line 12:
Remove the dpkg-query -L check for /usr/bin/recordly from the smoke test; rely
on the existing executable check for the installed launcher.

Hi @webadderall, I found youngchen3442@gmail.com on the Recordly contact page.
Would it be appropriate to use webadderall youngchen3442@gmail.com as the Debian package’s Maintainer field, or would you prefer another contact address?
Thank you!
