This PR adds Cheaper Inference as an AI mode provider preset.
Cheaper Inference is an OpenAI-compatible LLM gateway.
One API key gives access to models from several labs.
It uses the same pattern as #2746 (NanoGPT).

With "ai:provider": "cheaperinference", Wave sets these defaults:

  • ai:endpoint: https://api.cheaperinference.com/v1/chat/completions
  • ai:apitype: openai-chat
  • ai:apitokensecretname: CHEAPER_INFERENCE_KEY
Changes
  • pkg/aiusechat/uctypes/uctypes.go: new AIProvider_CheaperInference constant.
  • pkg/aiusechat/usechat-mode.go: endpoint, secret name and provider defaults.
  • pkg/aiusechat/usechat_mode_test.go: test for the provider defaults (same as the Groq test).
  • pkg/wconfig/settingsconfig.go and schema/waveai.json: new enum value.
  • docs/docs/waveai-modes.mdx: provider list, example section, field reference and capabilities note.

Walkthrough

The change adds Cheaper Inference as an AI provider. Its defaults set the OpenAI Chat API type, chat-completions endpoint, and CHEAPER_INFERENCE_KEY secret name when those values are missing. The provider is added to configuration schemas, and a test checks its defaults. Documentation describes the provider configuration, manual capability setup, and model ID format.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 4 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Match the endpoint to the configured API type.

If a mode sets ai:apitype to openai-responses but omits ai:endpoint, this default still selects Chat Completions. Wave then sends a Responses request to the wrong endpoint. Cheaper Inference supports a separate /v1/responses endpoint. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Select the default endpoint from config.APIType, or require an explicit endpoint for non-chat API types.
