uBlock not saving filters #4153

Description

@KMRichards

Prerequisites

  • I verified that this is not a filter list issue. Report any issues with filter lists or broken website functionality in the uAssets issue tracker.
  • This is NOT a YouTube, Facebook or Twitch report. These sites MUST be reported by clicking their respective links.
  • I performed a cursory search of the issue tracker to avoid opening a duplicate issue.
  • The issue is not present after disabling uBO in the browser.
  • I checked the documentation to understand that the issue I am reporting is not normal behavior.

I tried to reproduce the issue when...

  • uBO is the only extension.
  • using a new, unmodified browser profile.

Description

All of a sudden, specific filters I had set in My Filters have disappeared, and re-importing them from the text file displays them but does not save them. Items that I added from the dialog box when blocking specific items on a page are not appearing there either. This only started happening this week and I am wondering if something happened during an automatic update.

A specific URL where the issue occurs.

https://enewspaper.latimes.com/desktop/latimes/default.aspx?pubid=50435180-e58e-48b5-8e0c-236bf740270e

Steps to Reproduce

  1. A few seconds after the page loads, a "subscribe now" ad pops up.
  2. Right click > AdBlock > Block this ad
  3. Ad disappears, no need to adjust slider.
  4. Dialog box says ad will be blocked in the future.
  5. Checked My Filters in settings. Blank list.
  6. Imported filters from ASCII text file. Filters display.
  7. Clicked on Apply Changes.
  8. Switched tabs and came back to My Filters. Blank again.

Expected behavior

Expected ad to stay blocked on future visits to page.

Actual behavior

Ad displays again the next day.

    Some similar recent issues:

    • (KMRichards): using a new, unmodified browser profile.

I don't know how reliable it is, but even if it has been met, everything is still 'null' in your uBO, maybe corrupted extension or browser profile, maybe reinstalling uBO or trying a new fresh browser profile can fix it.

    • Right click > AdBlock > Block this ad
    • Ad disappears, no need to adjust slider.
    • Dialog box says ad will be blocked in the future
    • Checked My Filters in settings. Blank list.

That is not from uBlock Origin, that is from "AdBlock for Firefox". So of course the filters you create with "AdBlock for Firefox" won't appear as custom filter in uBO's "My filters".

    • Imported filters from ASCII text file. Filters display.
    • Clicked on Apply Changes.
    • Switched tabs and came back to My Filters. Blank again.

As per your troubleshooting information, the extension storage appears corrupted, unusable. Remove "uBlock Origin", quit the browser, launch the browser, reinstall uBlock Origin.

Also, do not use other content blocker(s) along with uBlock Origin.

File under "duh". I didn't even notice that. Thanks for cleaning my glasses so I can see more clearly.

Part of my problem was that the AdBlock icon wasn't pinned to the toolbar, so I forgot it was there and saw only the uBlock Origin icon. Disabling uBlock and repinning AdBlock seems to have eliminated the problem, so I believe your last sentence is the defining factor.

What I don't remember how to do is uninstall uBlock, although with it disabled it's now a "no harm, no foul" situation.

    Thanks again!

how to do is uninstall uBlock

Click three-dot menu on "uBlock Origin" card in about:addons, click "Remove" entry.

Sorry to intrude again, but now Firefox says uBlock "cannot be removed".

I tried deleting the uBlock0@raymondhill.net.xpi file from the Extensions folder under my profile in Windows Explorer and the next time I restart Firefox uBlock comes back to life in the toolbar and the .xpi file recreates itself.

I have it disabled so it can't conflict with AdBlock, but I think it would be cleaner to uninstall it. As the developer, have you any suggestions as to how I can remove uBlock, since the normal processes are failing me?

Thank you for tolerating my continued PITA-ness. I feel pretty stupid right now.

Reboot your computer and then follow: Firefox: Disable or remove Add-ons

I thought I had done that already, but I made a deliberate attempt again to be certain.

With uBO disabled, I closed the browser and (again) removed the .xpi file, then rebooted, and that worked. It's now gone from the about:addons page and the .xpi file did not recreate.

Thank you all for your help with this, and my apologies (again) if I acted more clueless than I really am.
