🎯 What: Extracted the duplicate fallback search logic into a reusable shell function named fallback_search.

💡 Why: Improved maintainability and readability by replacing two identical if/elif/else blocks with a single function, eliminating 14 lines of duplicate code.

Verification:

  1. Ran all tests (./test/smoke-test.sh and ./test/integration-test.sh), which all passed successfully.
  2. Verified the fix using Code Review tool (rating: Correct).

Result: Clean, readable search logic that preserves all original functionality without modifying behavior.

Code Review

This pull request refactors bin/idstack-learnings-search by extracting duplicated fallback search logic into a reusable shell function fallback_search(). The review feedback recommends improving the robustness and POSIX compliance of this function by using "--" to prevent option injection in grep and replacing the obsolete "tail -$LIMIT" syntax with "tail -n $LIMIT".

Important

The consumer version of Gemini Code Assist on GitHub is being sunset. Starting June 18, 2026, new organization installations will be blocked, and all code review activity will officially cease on July 17, 2026.
For more details on the timeline and next steps, please review the Help Documentation.

Robustness & Standards Compliance

  1. Option Injection: If $KEYWORD or $TYPE starts with a hyphen (e.g., -v), grep will interpret it as a command-line option rather than a search pattern. Using -- signals the end of options and prevents this.
  2. POSIX Compliance: The tail -"$LIMIT" syntax is obsolete/deprecated in modern POSIX standards. Using tail -n "$LIMIT" is the standard, portable way to specify the line limit.
  if [ -n "$KEYWORD" ]; then
    cat $SOURCES 2>/dev/null | grep -i -- "$KEYWORD" | tail -n "$LIMIT"
  elif [ -n "$TYPE" ]; then
    cat $SOURCES 2>/dev/null | grep -- "\"type\":\"$TYPE\"" | tail -n "$LIMIT"
  else
    cat $SOURCES 2>/dev/null | tail -n "$LIMIT"
  fi
