Feat: Codex support — configure, agent recognition, and docs - #1337
Conversation
Codex has no settings file and no background service, but — confirmed against the real Codex CLI — loads a dotenv file, ~/.codex/.env, itself at process start. This adds the third persistence mechanism alongside claude-code's settings file and OpenCode's service environment: enable writes four proxy-variable spellings plus Codex's own dedicated CA override (CODEX_CA_CERTIFICATE, checked before the generic SSL_CERT_FILE per the real binary) into that file. Editing scans the whole file for an existing definition of each managed key, not just a block agentop wrote itself, and refuses outright if a key is defined more than once rather than guess which line a dotenv loader would use. disable restores the simple, one-shot Prior record claude-code's disable already uses today, deliberately not the stricter Written-based drift check tracked by #1289 for a later pass across all three integrations at once. Verified live: built from this branch, ran `configure codex enable` against the real Cortex config, then a bare `codex exec` with no agentop wrapper at all round-tripped successfully through the real proxy with no certificate error, confirming both routing and CA trust work from the dotenv file alone. Then `status` and `disable` cleaned up correctly. Part of #942. docs/agents/codex.md covers enable/revert and CA trust; the remaining checklist items (tool inventory, metrics aggregation, the rest of the doc) are explicit follow-ups. …rited caution Reviewer question: why four spellings instead of testing which one Codex actually reads? Answer: tested each spelling alone (the other three absent) against a bare codex exec, with the other three absent, and watched Cortex's own proxy log pick up Codex's MCP handshake for every single one. Codex checks for whichever spelling is present rather than committing to one, so there's no single "right" choice to narrow down to. Replaces the comment's prior deferral to execProxyVars' reasoning (true of other tools, but not actually tested for Codex itself) with this concrete, Codex-specific result. Closes the last three #942 checklist items. **Metrics aggregation.** Codex was unrecognised, so its traffic pooled into agentop's "Other" row and contributed no agent name to session attribution. knownClients' own godoc named Codex as waiting for exactly this detection work. Two product tokens fold to one canonical name, both captured live from Codex 0.160.1: codex_exec/<ver> (<os>; <arch>) unknown [(codex_exec; <ver>)] -> codex codex-mcp-client/<ver> -> codex Its telemetry exporter (OTel-OTLP-Exporter-Rust) is deliberately NOT claimed: the token names a generic Rust crate, so claiming it would file every Rust program using that crate under Codex — the mis-mapping the map's godoc calls worse than no answer. Verified live by swapping the built binary into the running laptop proxy: all three User-Agents classify as intended, `series:codex` appears in GET /v1/usage?group=agent with its token counts, and Codex's traffic moved out of the spawning agent's session into its own pending:codex@<pid> bucket. Binary reverted and checksum-verified afterwards. **Tool inventory.** Documented as unsupported with the three independent reasons, any one sufficient: `tools scan` reads only Claude Code transcripts and its hardcoded built-in names; tool-prune's default paths exclude /responses; and even repointed, it reads a top-level `tools` array where Codex nests its manifest under input[].tools[].tools[]. Also notes that tool-prune and inference-parser keep separate suffix lists and only the parser's knows /responses. **Docs.** docs/agents/codex.md gains "What Cortex shows for it", "Verified depth" and "Known issues". Two findings worth flagging: tokens aggregate but cost does not (no rate ships for the model, which is subscription-served), and Codex never leaves its pending bucket because it sends none of the three session headers a laptop install reads. Found by comparing the suite against OpenCode's, which has all three: the codex equivalents were missing, so each of these code paths was written and reasoned about but never pinned. - enable's bridge-disabled refusal. codexWanted's OTHER refusal (a bridge with no ca_dir) deliberately gets no test: config.Validate rejects "tls_bridge.mode=enabled requires ca_dir", so it is unreachable through a config that loads, and the comment says so rather than leaving a reader looking for the case. - Declining at the prompt, for both verbs: exit 3 (not 1), nothing written, and for disable the record kept. - Usage errors: no args, -h/--help, help after the action, unknown action, status --yes, a stray argument. Each one was mutation-checked rather than trusted for passing — the critique of the #1331 suite was that six mutations left it green, so the same test applies here: neutralise the bridgeEnabled refusal -> RefusesADisabledBridge fails neutralise the !yes && !confirm guard -> both Declining subtests fail register --yes for status as well -> Usage/status_--yes fails The usage test also points HOME at a temp dir, so a case added later that reaches the dispatch cannot touch the real ~/.codex/.env. Summary
The overall shape is good: the configure dispatch, the flag handling and the line-preserving editor all follow the claude-code/opencode patterns. The gates pass on the head and also with current main merged in. There are two blockers, both checked against Codex's source at rust-v0.160.1. First, Codex's own .env loader filters out the CODEX_CA_CERTIFICATE that enable writes, so the CA half of enable does nothing. Second, interactive codex (the TUI) sends User-Agent tokens that the new knownClients entries don't cover. The remaining comments are smaller gaps in the dotenv editor.

must-fix: Codex throws this key away when it reads it from ~/.codex/.env. load_dotenv → set_filtered skips every key whose uppercased name starts with CODEX_ ("Security: Do not allow .env files to create or modify any variables with names starting with CODEX_"). That code is in the tested tag and is still on main. custom_ca does read CODEX_CA_CERTIFICATE, but only from the real process environment. So enable writes a CA override that Codex never sees.
That means the live run got its CA trust from somewhere other than this file. The likely sources are the bridge CA trusted in the macOS keychain (custom_ca starts from rustls_native_certs, which reads keychain trust; configure bob enable tells you to add it there) or an SSL_CERT_FILE exported in the shell.
Suggest writing SSL_CERT_FILE (the bundle) instead. It isn't CODEX_-prefixed, so it gets past the filter, and it's the next variable custom_ca checks. The foreign-value guard already handles a collision with another tool's SSL_CERT_FILE by refusing. Then re-verify with the CA removed from the keychain and env -u SSL_CERT_FILE. Text to update: this comment, codexUsage L98–105, and docs/agents/codex.md L27–33, L88–103, L183–185.
Smaller point in the same area: custom_ca adds the custom CA on top of the native roots (custom_ca.rs L188–189) rather than replacing them. So "REPLACES the trust store" is wrong, though the bundle is still a fine value.

must-fix: These entries cover codex exec only. Interactive codex (the TUI, which enable's "run codex as usual" sends people to) starts its in-process app-server with client_name: "codex-tui" (tui/src/lib.rs L501). Initialize then makes that name the originator (initialize_processor.rs L168; the L19 exemption covers only the daemon and the backend). The UA is {originator}/{version} (…) (default_client.rs L152–166), so the TUI sends codex-tui/0.160.1 …. Anything sent before initialize uses the default codex_cli_rs/… (L42).
Neither token is in this map, so TUI traffic still pools into Other. Suggest adding "codex-tui" and "codex_cli_rs" → "codex", plus matching TestParseUserAgent_Codex rows, ideally with a live capture from a TUI session. The UA table in docs/agents/codex.md L111–114 needs the same change.

suggestion: Codex parses this file with dotenvy 0.15.7. Its parser treats export KEY=VALUE, an indented line, and spaces around = as live definitions (parse.rs L41–62). This regex matches none of the three, so the foreign-value guard and the duplicate check never see them. I checked with a throwaway test: export HTTPS_PROXY=http://corp.example.com:3128, HTTPS_PROXY=… and HTTPS_PROXY = … each let enable exit 0 and append a second HTTPS_PROXY. Codex sets the pairs in file order, so the appended Cortex line wins and the corporate proxy is silently overridden. That is exactly what the guard exists to stop.
^\s*(?:export\s+)?([A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*)\s*=\s*(.*)$ would match dotenvy. Related: duplicate precedence isn't undocumented for Codex, it's last-wins. Refusing is still reasonable, but the stated reason (here, in codexUsage, and in docs L36–40) should change.

suggestion: disable never removes this comment, so every enable→disable cycle leaves one more behind. In a scratch test, 3 cycles on a file holding only OPENAI_API_KEY=… left 3 # Added by agentop configure codex enable lines. That contradicts "disable removes only the keys it added" and "everything else … is left exactly as it was" (codexUsage L107–113). Either have applyCodexDisable remove the marker line, or don't write it.

suggestion: Every value that reaches this line is codexIsOurs. The refusal in planCodexEnable (L383–389) is the exact negation of that check, so Prior is always all-nil here. The restore branch can only be hit through a hand-written state file, as the comment on TestCodexDisable_RestoresRecordedPriorValue already says. As a result, codex-state.json, applyCodexDisable's "not recoverable" warning, and the docs' "The record" / "back to a recorded value" (codex.md L49–63, codexUsage L113) all describe things that can't happen.
A simpler option: drop the state file and have disable unset only the managed keys whose value is still Cortex-shaped. That also leaves alone a value someone hand-edits after enable (the #1289 gap), with no Written check needed. If you'd rather keep this matching claude-code until #1289, the docs should at least say the record is always empty today.

suggestion: When CODEX_HOME is set, Codex reads $CODEX_HOME/.env; ~/.codex is only the fallback (find_codex_home, which load_dotenv uses). With CODEX_HOME set, enable writes a file Codex never loads, and status still reports enabled. Suggest defaulting to $CODEX_HOME/.env when it's non-empty.

nit: "a third persistence mechanism alongside claude-code's settings file and opencode's service environment". configureUsage now says, correctly, "Five agents persist, by four different mechanisms", so this is the fourth: Bob Shell's rc function is missing from this list.
Addresses huang195's review on #1337. Both blockers were real and both were traced to Codex's source at rust-v0.160.1. **The CA half of enable did nothing.** Codex's dotenv loader drops every key whose uppercased name starts with CODEX_ (load_dotenv -> set_filtered, deliberately, so a .env cannot reconfigure Codex itself), so the CODEX_CA_CERTIFICATE enable wrote was discarded before custom_ca — which does read it, from the real process environment — ever saw it. Now writes SSL_CERT_FILE, which survives the filter and is the next name custom_ca checks. My original live verification could not have caught this: SSL_CERT_FILE was already exported in the shell I tested from, so Codex got its trust from there. Re-verified with the ambient CA variables stripped (env -u SSL_CERT_FILE -u CURL_CA_BUNDLE -u REQUESTS_CA_BUNDLE -u GIT_SSL_CAINFO) and judged on whether the BRIDGE TERMINATED rather than on whether Codex replied — the distinction that matters, because without a usable CA Codex rejects the forged cert, Cortex falls back to opaque passthrough, and the request still succeeds while observing nothing. Measured: CODEX_CA_CERTIFICATE gave passthrough, identical to writing no CA variable at all; SSL_CERT_FILE gives 0 passthrough lines. Also corrects "REPLACES the trust store" — custom_ca is additive. **The TUI was unrecognised.** The new knownClients entries covered `codex exec` only, while enable's own closing line sends people to plain `codex`. Its UA is {originator}/{version}, and the originator is the app-server's client_name: "codex-tui" for the TUI, "codex_cli_rs" for anything sent before initialize completes. Both added; both confirmed present in the shipped binary. The five other originator names it carries (codex_vscode, codex_desktop, codex-app-server, codex_mcp_server, codex-cli) are deliberately NOT claimed — unseen on live traffic, and a wrong fold is silent where an unrecognised agent is not. Four smaller fixes, each as reported: - The dotenv regex missed three shapes dotenvy calls definitions (`export KEY=V`, leading whitespace, spaces around `=`), so the foreign-value and duplicate guards could not see them and enable appended a second definition. Codex resolves duplicates last-wins, so the appended Cortex line beat a deliberately-set corporate proxy — the exact outcome the guard exists to prevent. - disable now reclaims enable's marker comment, so a cycle is a round trip instead of leaving one line behind each time. - CODEX_HOME is honoured: enable wrote, and status read, a file Codex never loads when it is set. - The Prior record is always empty today, because enable refuses exactly the values that would populate it. Kept for shape-parity with claude-code and opencode (#1289 is one pass over all three) and documented as such rather than restructured. Plus the "third persistence mechanism" nit: it is the fourth, and bobshell's rc function was missing from the list. Every fix is mutation-tested: reverting each one individually makes its new test fail, so the suite distinguishes working code from broken. Thanks — both blockers were real, and the first one invalidated a claim I had published. All seven comments are addressed in e7d6710. Blocker 1:
|
.env holds |
Bridge outcome |
|---|---|
CODEX_CA_CERTIFICATE (what the PR wrote) |
passthrough — tls-bridge passthrough … reason=client-hung-up |
| no CA variable at all | passthrough — identical |
SSL_CERT_FILE |
terminates, 0 passthrough lines |
The CODEX_-prefixed name being indistinguishable from writing nothing is the proof of the filter. Switched to SSL_CERT_FILE.
The deeper lesson, which is now written into the code comment and the doc: "did Codex reply?" cannot detect this failure. Without a usable CA, Codex rejects the forged cert, Cortex falls back to opaque passthrough, and the request completes normally while Cortex observes nothing. I had the evidence in proxy.log the whole time and used the wrong success criterion. Also corrected "REPLACES the trust store" → custom_ca is additive, per the lines you cited.
Blocker 2: the TUI — confirmed
Added codex-tui and codex_cli_rs. Both confirmed present in the shipped 0.160.1 binary, which also carries five more originator names (codex_vscode, codex_desktop, codex-app-server, codex_mcp_server, codex-cli). I've deliberately not claimed those five — none has been seen on live traffic or traced to a client_name, and knownClients' own godoc is right that a wrong fold is silent where an unrecognised agent is not. Noted in the comment so the next person has the list without having to re-derive it.
The five smaller comments — all applied
- Regex vs dotenvy's grammar. Fixed to
^\s*(?:export\s+)?([A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*)\s*=\s*(.*)$. Pinned with a subtest per shape asserting refusal and that the file is byte-identical afterwards, plus a test that a commented#KEY=VALUEstill doesn't count. Corrected the stated reason to last-wins in all three places. - Marker comment.
disablenow reclaims it via one shared constant and exact match, so a user-edited copy stays theirs. Test: 3 cycles on a file holding one unrelated key, asserting 0 markers and exact round-trip. Prioralways nil. Documented rather than restructured, per your "if you'd rather keep this matching claude-code" option — bug: claude-code disable silently discards manual edits made since enable #1289 is one pass over all three integrations and a Codex-only design would have to be unpicked to get there. The code comment and the doc both now say the record is always empty today and why.CODEX_HOME. Honoured by bothenableandstatus. Verified live: with it set, writes and reads$CODEX_HOME/.envand leaves~/.codex/.envuntouched; without it,statuscorrectly reportsnot fully enabled.- Nit. Fourth mechanism, bobshell included.
Verification
Every fix is mutation-tested — reverting each one individually makes its new test fail:
| Mutation | Test |
|---|---|
| narrow the regex back | RefusesForeignValueInEveryDotenvySpelling fails |
drop the removeComment call |
RoundTripsWithoutLeakingTheMarker fails |
write the CODEX_-prefixed name again |
WritesSSLCertFileNotCodexPrefixedCA fails |
ignore CODEX_HOME |
HonoursCodexHome fails |
drop codex-tui |
TestParseUserAgent_Codex fails |
Plus end-to-end: a bare codex exec with ambient CA vars stripped → 0 passthrough lines; status → enabled; disable → exact round-trip. go vet, gofmt -l, go mod tidy -diff and the full suites clean for core and cmd/agentop.
One pre-existing failure, not mine
TestRunExec_BeforeFirstStartRunsAndSaysWhatIsLost fails on my machine and also fails with my changes stashed, so it predates this PR. Cause: it doesn't clear the ambient CA variables, so the child inherits the developer's real SSL_CERT_FILE instead of the fixture's. It passes under env -u SSL_CERT_FILE …. That means it fails for anyone who has run agentop configure claude-code enable on their own machine — i.e. any real user of this tool — while passing in CI, where those variables are unset. Happy to fix in a separate PR; left alone here to keep this one scoped to your review.

TestRunExec_BeforeFirstStartRunsAndSaysWhatIsLost asserted that the child's SSL_CERT_FILE is EMPTY, which conflates "runExec did not set it" with "nothing else had set it". The child inherits os.Environ(), so the two come apart on any machine where those four names are already exported — which is every machine that has run `agentop configure claude-code enable` or sat inside an `agentop exec`, i.e. any real user of this tool. It failed there and passed in CI, where they are unset, so the one environment it was never exercised in was a developer's own. Found while running the suite for #1337; it fails identically with that PR's changes stashed. Now pins the ambient value to a sentinel first and asserts the child still sees the sentinel. That is ambient-proof and also stronger: it pins the property the note on stderr actually promises — a value the user set themselves SURVIVES rather than being replaced by a bundle path that does not exist — instead of merely that the variable is absent. The probe is derived from bundleKeys, so it now covers all four replacing variables rather than SSL_CERT_FILE alone, and a fifth is covered the day it is added. Verified to pass with the ambient variables set and unset, and to fail when execEnv's missing-bundle guard is removed (all four keys report). Also adds the SSL_CERT_FILE collision test #1337's review implies but did not pin: that key's name changed from Codex-private to shared, so refusing rather than overwriting a value someone else put there is now load-bearing and gets its own test instead of relying on the proxy keys'. The CODEX_HOME fix resolves the same variable Codex does, from the same place — agentop's own environment — so the two agree whenever both are launched from one shell. They do not when it is set only for Codex, e.g. by a wrapper script: agentop writes ~/.codex/.env, Codex reads $CODEX_HOME/.env, and status then reports `enabled` off the same wrong file enable wrote. Nothing can detect that from outside, since there is no signal that distinguishes "CODEX_HOME is not in use" from "it is in use somewhere agentop cannot see", so this is a documented limitation with --env as the escape hatch rather than something to fix in code. The agents table already links docs/agents/codex.md, but the headline sentence listed Claude Code, OpenCode and IBM Bob only — so the one place a reader looks first did not say Codex is supported, while the table two screens down did. #942 also asks for a link from the index in docs/agents/README.md. That file does not exist yet (it is #939's), so there is nothing to link from; the table and this line are the two places that exist today. All seven findings from the previous round are addressed: the CA moved to SSL_CERT_FILE (with the measured passthrough evidence in the comment), codex-tui / codex_cli_rs are recognised, the line regex now matches dotenvy's export / indented / spaced-= shapes, disable reclaims the marker comment, the unreachable restore branch is documented as such, CODEX_HOME is honoured, and the persistence-mechanism count is fixed. Two nits inline, neither blocking.

nit: reindex repeats parseCodexEnv's indexing loop line for line. Having parseCodexEnv fill f.lines and then call f.reindex() would keep one definition of how a line maps to a key — the property the comment in removeComment leans on.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
nit: Because the dotenv loader puts this into Codex's process environment, every tool Codex spawns (git, curl, python) inherits SSL_CERT_FILE too, and for OpenSSL-shaped tools it replaces the trust store. That's fine while the bundle exists, since it carries the platform roots. But if Cortex is removed without configure codex disable, those children lose all trust. claude-code enable has the same exposure, so this is not blocking; a line in docs/agents/codex.md naming disable as part of uninstall would cover it.
Summary
Closes the remaining #942 (Codex support) checklist items. Three parts:
1.
agentop configure codex enable/disable/statusCodex has no settings file and no background service, but — confirmed against the real CLI — loads a dotenv file,
~/.codex/.env, itself at process start. This adds that as a fourth persistence mechanism alongside claude-code's settings file, Bob Shell's rc function, and OpenCode's service environment.enablewrites four proxy spellings plusCODEX_CA_CERTIFICATE(Codex's own dedicated CA override, checked before the genericSSL_CERT_FILEper the real binary).Editing scans the whole file for an existing definition of each managed key, not just a block agentop wrote itself, and refuses outright if a key is defined more than once rather than guess which line a dotenv loader would use.
disableuses the same simple one-shotPriorrestore claude-code'sdisablealready does — deliberately not a bespokeWritten-based drift check, which stays scoped to #1289 as one pass across all three integrations.2. Codex recognised as an agent (metrics aggregation)
Codex was unrecognised, so its traffic pooled into agentop's
Otherrow and contributed no agent name to session attribution.knownClients' own godoc named Codex as waiting for exactly this work. Two product tokens fold to one canonical name:codex_exec/<ver> (<os>; <arch>) unknown(± a trailing(codex_exec; <ver>)comment)codexcodex-mcp-client/<ver>codexIts telemetry exporter (
OTel-OTLP-Exporter-Rust) is deliberately not claimed — the token names a generic Rust crate, so claiming it would file every Rust program using that crate under Codex's name.3. Tool inventory: unsupported, documented
Three independent reasons, any one sufficient:
tools scanreads only Claude Code transcripts and its hardcoded built-in names;tool-prune's default paths exclude/responses; and even repointed, it reads a top-leveltoolsarray where Codex nests its manifest underinput[].tools[].tools[]. Also flags thattool-pruneandinference-parserkeep separate suffix lists and only the parser's recognises/responses— silent drift worth knowing before changing either.docs/agents/codex.mdgains "What Cortex shows for it", "Verified depth" and "Known issues", and is linked from the README's supported-agents table.Test plan
