Fixes #549.

Problem

In native xy.pyplot, pandas datetime-indexed Series.plot() / DataFrame.plot() had two problems:

  1. Period numbers instead of dates. pandas 3.1 passes ax.plot() the raw integers behind its PeriodIndex (asi8) where 3.0 passed Period objects. The shim left those integers alone, so ax.get_xlim()[0] came out as 15340.0 instead of 1325376000000.0. Business-day (freq="B") series take a separate pandas path with their own day counts and had the same problem.
  2. PNG export crash. pandas' minor TimeSeries_Date* locator and formatter were stored and then called during export, raising NotImplementedError: Derived must override. Only the major setters were guarded before.

Fix (python/xy/pyplot/_axes.py)

  • _restore_pandas_period_timestamps converts the integers back to timestamps. It only does this when the array shares memory with, and equals, the index pandas just recorded in ax._plot_data. A later numeric overlay keeps its own units, even when its values match period numbers (e.g. [0, 1, 2] after a daily index that starts on 1970-01-01). Business-day numbers are converted with np.busday_offset from the epoch, which is pandas' own inverse. Checks are duck-typed, so the shim never imports pandas.
  • set_minor_locator / set_minor_formatter now ignore pandas' tickers, as the major setters already did.

Tests

  • tests/pyplot/test_pdsh_gap_features.py: daily, monthly, hourly and business-day indexes, each as a Series and a DataFrame. Each checks datetime xdata, millisecond get_xdata(orig=False) and limits, and PNG export. Also new: a numeric-overlay test and a pandas minor-ticker test. All new tests, plus the existing test_pandas_datetime_series_plot_completes, fail before the fix.
  • New corpus case tests/pyplot/corpus/59_pandas_datetime_plot.py reproduces the export failure before the fix. It now passes the native corpus run and the comparison against Matplotlib 3.11.
  • pandas' plotting backend imports Matplotlib itself. A REQUIRES table in test_corpus.py skips this case where pandas or Matplotlib is missing and keeps it out of the Matplotlib-blocked boundary test. xy.pyplot itself is still asserted Matplotlib-free.
  • pandas>=3 added to the dev group, so CI runs this path. pandas is not a runtime dependency. uv.lock and docs/app/uv.lock updated.
  • Focused tests also pass on pandas 3.0.3.

Spec / changelog

  • spec/matplotlib/compat.md: updated the datetime coordinates row and the corpus paragraph.
  • news/549.bugfix.md

Validation

  • uv run --with pre-commit pre-commit run --all-files, ruff check, ruff format --check, ty check: pass
  • uv run pytest tests/pyplot: 1444 passed

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed pandas datetime-indexed plots so daily, monthly, hourly, and business-day data use correctly scaled date coordinates and limits.
    • Numeric overlays retain their original coordinate units when plotted alongside pandas date data.
    • Fixed PNG export failures caused by pandas minor date tickers.
  • Compatibility
    • Improved support for pandas 3.0 and 3.1 plotting in native mode, including calendar-based coordinates and limits.

…549)

pandas 3.1 plots a datetime-indexed Series/DataFrame by passing ax.plot()
its PeriodIndex.asi8 ordinals (business-day series: busday_count ordinals)
instead of Period objects, so the native shim plotted raw ordinals
(first xlim 15340.0 rather than 1325376000000.0). Map those integers back to
timestamps only when they share storage with, and equal, the index pandas
just recorded in ax._plot_data, so ordinary numeric overlays keep their units.

pandas' minor TimeSeries_Date* locator/formatter were stored and then called
during export, raising NotImplementedError; apply the existing major-ticker
units-registry guard to the minor setters too.

Adds pandas to the dev group, regression tests for daily/monthly/hourly/
business-day Series and DataFrames, a numeric-overlay and minor-ticker test,
corpus case 59_pandas_datetime_plot.py (declared as needing pandas and
matplotlib for its input library), and the compat spec update.

Walkthrough

Native xy.pyplot restores pandas datetime-index coordinates to epoch-millisecond timestamps and ignores pandas minor date tickers. Tests cover date frequencies, numeric overlays, PNG export, and optional pandas-based corpus execution.

Changes: Pandas datetime plotting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restore pandas coordinates and handle minor tickers
python/xy/pyplot/_axes.py, tests/pyplot/test_pdsh_gap_features.py, spec/matplotlib/compat.md, news/549.bugfix.md
Axes.plot restores pandas period and business-day ordinals only when they match the active plot record’s index storage and values. Pandas minor locators and formatters are ignored. Tests cover date coordinates, limits, numeric overlays, and PNG export.
Run pandas plotting examples when inputs are available
pyproject.toml, tests/pyplot/corpus/*, tests/pyplot/test_corpus.py, tests/pyplot/test_boundaries.py, tests/pyplot/test_reference_corpus.py, spec/matplotlib/compat.md
Pandas is added to the development dependencies. Corpus snippets can declare required modules, and the corpus runners skip snippets when required inputs are unavailable. The new pandas plotting snippet exercises daily, monthly, and hourly indexes.

Explanation

Issue #549 is the only directly linked issue and remains open. The change restores pandas period and business-day integer coordinates only when the plotted array shares storage with and matches the recorded pandas index. It preserves canonical millisecond x-data and limits for daily, monthly, hourly, and business-day Series and DataFrame plots. It preserves numeric overlay units, including the epoch [0, 1, 2] case. It ignores pandas minor locators and formatters, which prevents the reported PNG export failure. Regression tests and the corpus case cover these behaviors. pandas>=3 is in the development group only, so pandas remains optional at runtime. The tests are version-agnostic, and the reported focused pandas 3.0.3 run supplements coverage of the pandas 3.0 path.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed source implements the coordinate restoration and minor-ticker guard required by #549. The changed tests, corpus dependency skips, boundary handling, specification text, news fragment, development dependency, and lock files support regression coverage, optional pandas usage, or documentation of this fix. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

[Low impact] The PR appears safe to merge; the previous missing-dependency test failure is addressed.

Summary

xy.pyplot restores calendar coordinates for pandas datetime plots and ignores pandas’ minor date tickers so PNG export can complete.

  • Pandas date plots keep calendar coordinates on the native time axis.
  • Pandas minor date tickers no longer block PNG export.

pandas' Series.plot imports matplotlib for its backend, so a dev environment
with pandas but no matplotlib failed these tests instead of skipping them.
The calendar-coordinate test now checks every converted x value, not only the
endpoints, and the news fragment describes period and business-day ordinals
separately.
