🟡 Minor · Do not interpolate across a non-finite x boundary. · _axes.py:3035-3045
python/xy/pyplot/_axes.py:3035-3045
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winDo not interpolate across a non-finite x boundary.
When
whereends before a masked orNaTx value andinterpolate=True, the boundary interpolation checks only the y differences.xv[end]isNaN, socross_xbecomesNaNand is appended to the area entry. This produces an invalid polygon coordinate. Require both x endpoints to be finite before adding an interpolation point.Suggested fix

🟡 Minor · Preserve datetime-axis metadata for empty temporal fills. · _axes.py:3173-3191
python/xy/pyplot/_axes.py:3173-3191
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winPreserve datetime-axis metadata for empty temporal fills.
When all temporal
xvalues are masked orNaT, no polygon is generated. This branch returns an unregistered entry without_orig_x. Consequently,_axis_holds_datetimes("x")cannot identify the axis as datetime on a fresh axes, which violates thefill_betweencompatibility contract. Preserve the original temporalxthrough the axis-metadata path used by non-empty fills without adding render geometry.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

No blocking issues. I validated the PR head (c82837d) in a running build.
Validated
- On
main, all three new corpus cases (56/57/58) fail withTypeError: float() argument must be a string or a real number, not 'datetime.datetime'. On this head they render. - I opened the exported HTML in headless Chromium (WebGL2) with no console errors:
- Python
datetime,datetime64[D]withstep="mid", and masked dates all showJan 01 … Jan 07calendar ticks. - The masked point leaves a gap.
- In the
sharexcase, the panel without date data shows the date ticks after it was rendered before the fill was added. - After
remove(), the numeric replacement fill shows numeric ticks.
- Python
- I also probed these cases in SVG export:
where=withinterpolate=Trueondatetime64[ns], timezone-awaredatetime,step="pre", a fully masked date array (falls back to numeric), NaT in a plain list (splits the polygon),plot+fill_betweenon the same axes, andset_xscale("log")(an explicit scale wins over the inferred time axis). All render correctly. - On a split fill (3 polygons),
set_alpha,set_visible,set_facecolor,set_zorder, andremove()apply to every polygon. A numericwhere=split no longer leaves orphan polygons afterremove(). _invalidate()now clears every shared sibling. Onmain, aset_titlein a 4×4sharexgrid already invalidated all 16 panels, so this adds no extra work._axis_holds_datetimesruns once per HTML export, even with 319where=polygons over 100k datetimes.tests/pyplot: 1151 passed, 105 skipped. Ruff check and format are clean. CI is green on this head.- The news fragment is present.
spec/matplotlib/compat.mdandcompat-matrix.mdmatch the behavior.
Optional follow-ups (outside this PR's scope)
fill_betweenx(y, dates, ...)still raises the sameTypeError. The spec scopes the datetime support tofill_between, so this is not spec drift, but Matplotlib supports it.ax.set_xlim(datetime, datetime)andax.set_xlim("2026-01-02", ...)raise on date axes. This also happens withplotonmain, so it existed before this PR.- The PR description still describes the original one-line
unit_converted_valuesfix. The diff now also covers shared-axis inference and split-fill ownership. Consider updating the description.
