The zone-map sidecar for a disk-backed column is named after the file alone (<file>.xyzones), and its header only checks the file's size and mtime plus the row count. Two columns that map the same file with the same length therefore share one sidecar, and whichever was folded last is loaded for both on the next build.

That happens with the ordinary ways of keeping a table on disk: the rows of a 2-D np.memmap, or several np.memmap(offset=...) columns packed into one file.

Repro (main @ 72a069f)

import numpy as np, xy
n = 1000
table = np.memmap("table.f64", dtype=np.float64, mode="w+", shape=(2, n))
table[0] = np.linspace(0, 1, n)        # x
table[1] = np.linspace(1000, 2000, n)  # y
table.flush(); del table

for build in range(2):
    mapped = np.memmap("table.f64", dtype=np.float64, mode="r", shape=(2, n))
    spec, _ = xy.scatter_chart(xy.scatter(x=mapped[0], y=mapped[1])).figure().build_payload()
    print(build, spec["x_axis"]["range"], spec["y_axis"]["range"])
0 [-0.03, 1.03] [970.0, 2030.0]
1 [970.0, 2030.0] [970.0, 2030.0]   # x axis now spans y's values; every point is off-screen

The first build is correct and writes the sidecar. Every later build (the next viewer restart, or a second figure in the same process) gives x the y column's min/max, so the chart comes up empty. With offset= columns the second column is wrong on its very first read, because the first column's sidecar is already there.

Fix

  • _ooc.backing_offset(arr) returns the byte offset of a column's first element in its file. It is measured from the root memmap, because a sliced memmap inherits its parent's .offset.
  • _zone_cache_path names every sidecar <file>.<offset>.xyzones. The offset is always written, .0 included, so a file/offset pair can't collide with a file whose name ends in .<digits>. A memmap-typed view with no mapping behind it counts as not disk-backed.
  • The sidecar magic goes from XYZONEC1 to XYZONEC2, so a v1 sidecar that may already hold another column's maps is refolded once instead of trusted.

In-RAM columns are not affected. Existing sidecars are refolded once because the name and magic changed.

Tests

  • tests/test_ooc.py::test_zone_map_cache_keeps_views_of_one_file_apart covers the 2-D table case above through xy.chart(xy.scatter(...)), with a cold build and then a warm build.
  • tests/test_ooc.py::test_zone_map_cache_keys_on_file_offset covers two np.memmap(offset=...) columns in one file, plus a file named <file>.<offset>.
  • tests/test_ooc.py::test_backing_offset_without_file_metadata_is_not_disk_backed was added after review.

Both fail on main (assert -5.0 == 7.0; the warm build returns x as (1000.0, 2000.0)) and pass with the fix. The full suite passes on this branch (4096 passed, 113 skipped; main is 4094 passed, 113 skipped). ruff check, ruff format --check, and ty check python report no new diagnostics compared with main.

Checklist

  • News fragment: news/524.bugfix.md
  • Spec: the sidecar note in spec/process/perf-audit-2026-07-22.md now says how the sidecar is named per column
  • No public API, payload, or import-boundary change

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Charts built from multiple disk-backed columns in the same file now retain the correct axis ranges instead of reusing another column’s cached statistics. Each column’s cached statistics remain separate, including when columns map different regions of the same file, so charts show the appropriate ranges after being built again.
    • After a replacement cache is written, obsolete cache files are removed when possible. Cleanup failures do not interrupt processing.

Two same-length memmapped columns from one file (rows of a 2-D table
memmap, or np.memmap(offset=...) columns) shared one `<file>.xyzones`
sidecar, so a rebuild loaded one column's min/max for the other and the
axis range pointed away from the data. Name the sidecar by the column's
byte offset too, and bump the sidecar magic so a v1 file that may hold
another column's maps is refolded once.

Walkthrough

Zone-map sidecar paths now include a memmapped array’s byte offset within its backing file. The cache format uses version-2 magic. After a successful replacement write, the store removes a legacy sidecar with version-1 magic on a best-effort basis.

Changes: Zone-map cache isolation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Memmap backing offset lookup
python/xy/_ooc.py, tests/test_ooc.py
Added backing_offset to find an array’s byte offset in its root memmap. Tests check arrays without mapping metadata.
Offset-aware cache paths and legacy cleanup

Cache creation can overwrite or delete other mapped files. Protect those files before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3f1e7

The new cache names separate columns stored in one file, and older entries are rebuilt rather than reused. No new security exposure was demonstrated, though concurrent writes and broader security coverage remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed persistence scope is sidecars beside a caller-supplied memmap backing file, now distinguished by offset. Reused statistics affect column ranges; the supplied evidence does not establish a new service or tenant boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — A mapped array supplies the backing path and offset; the cache reader validates its header and source stamp before accepting statistics. Arrays without usable mapping metadata do not receive an offset-derived sidecar.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Invalid or missing sidecars recover by recomputing from the mapped column. Atomic replacement limits partial reads, but simultaneous same-process writers to one PID-named temporary file remain an untested, preexisting case rather than an established PR-introduced attack path.

Explanation

The title names the primary change: the zone-map sidecar is now keyed by the column's byte offset within its backing file. The raw summary and PR objectives both describe this change, including the new <file>.<offset>.xyzones naming, the XYZONEC2 magic bump, and the offset-aware cache identity. The title is concise, specific, and does not use vague terms.

`table` at offset 8 and a file named `table.8` at offset 0 both mapped to
`table.8.xyzones`; writing `.0` too makes every file/offset pair distinct.
A memmap-typed view with no mapping behind it now counts as not disk-backed
instead of raising, the tests assert each column persisted a loadable
sidecar, and the spec paragraph is rewrapped.

No blocking issues found. I checked the fix in a running app and against spec/process/perf-audit-2026-07-22.md.

Live check (headless Chromium, HTML export). The repro app builds three charts. Each chart is built cold, then warm (the warm build reloads the sidecars):

  • the two rows of a 2-D np.memmap table as x/y
  • two np.memmap(offset=...) columns packed into one file
  • one single-column file at offset 0, to check that the plain case still caches and reloads
chart main: warm x range main: warm plot PR: warm x range PR: warm plot
2-D table rows [970, 2030] (y's range) empty (0 drawn pixels) [-0.03, 1.03] same as cold
offset= columns [6.94, 9.06] (y's range) empty (0 drawn pixels) [-5.03, -3.97] same as cold
single file correct correct correct correct

On the PR the axis tick labels match the data, and the browser shows no errors. The PR writes one sidecar per column (table.f64.0.xyzones, table.f64.16000.xyzones, single.f64.0.xyzones, ...). An np.load(mmap_mode="r") 2-D .npy also gets the right header-relative offset (t.npy.8120.xyzones), and each row reloads its own min/max.

Tests and lint. On the PR, the three new tests pass. On main they fail. The full suite gives 4097 passed and 112 skipped. One test fails, test_shared_glhost.py::test_mixed_size_presentation_at_device_pixel_ratio_two, and it fails the same way on main in this sandbox, so it is environmental. ruff check and ruff format --check are clean. The C901 count does not grow: the two pre-existing hits are in functions this PR does not touch.

Code and spec.

  • backing_offset measures from the deepest memmap in the .base chain. This handles views that inherit .offset. Column ingest makes strided and non-f64 inputs contiguous f64, so a column that reaches the cache is a contiguous f64 view. Two columns with the same file, offset, and row count are therefore the same bytes.
  • The magic bump (XYZONEC2) and the always-written .0 close the collisions from the earlier review rounds.
  • The perf-audit note now says how the sidecar is named. The news fragment is present.
  • Only bot checks are reported on 3f1e7b3. A maintainer needs to approve the CI workflows for this fork PR before merge.

There is one optional nit inline: v1 sidecars are left on disk.

Sidecar writes can overwrite a supported input named <file>.<offset>.xyzones.

For a memmapped column data at offset 0, _zone_cache_path returns data.0.xyzones. MemmapF64Builder accepts any path, so a supported float64 input can use that same name. On a cache miss, _store_zone_cache replaces the target with _os.replace(tmp, path) and does not check what the target contains. The magic check in _load_zone_cache runs only on read. It does not protect the write. The input file is replaced by zone-map bytes, and its data is lost.

The correction must keep supported inputs out of the sidecar namespace. Enforce the reserved .<offset>.xyzones name at the input entry point. Before replacing an existing target, establish that the target is a sidecar this code owns. A magic check alone cannot establish ownership, because a float64 input can begin with XYZONEC2. Stale sidecars must still be replaced. The exact change depends on the input entry points, and this review inspected only MemmapF64Builder. Do not apply a fix until those entry points are checked.

Do not unlink an unowned legacy path.

When data is ingested, successful cache creation writes data.0.xyzones, then checks data.xyzones. A supported float64 input at data.xyzones can be deleted when its first eight bytes are XYZONEC1. The base implementation used data.xyzones as the cache path and did not delete it after storing another cache.

A v1 sidecar is also accepted by open_f64: its header and payload size are multiples of eight bytes. Therefore, the same file can be a valid v1 sidecar and a supported float64 input. Remove this cleanup or replace it with ownership tracking that cannot classify an input by magic bytes alone.
