Don't load tracking code for user roles that aren't tracked - #334
Conversation
For an untracked role (administrators by default), the tracker is registered but not enqueued, and neither is its plausible.init() call. FormSubmit::add_js() and the cloaked affiliate links script only checked whether it was registered, and enqueued scripts that depend on it, which pulled the tracker onto the page anyway. The tracker then left window.plausible an object, so every call to it threw "window.plausible is not a function": the form and affiliate link scripts, and the 404, search and query parameter events attached to the tracker. The WooCommerce checkout and WooCommerce/EDD purchase events were echoed for those roles too. Add Helpers::main_script_is_enqueued() and only add tracking code when the tracker is enqueued.

Check initialization, not only enqueued status.
If another plugin enqueues a script that depends on plausible-analytics for an excluded role, WordPress reports plausible-analytics as enqueued. Assets::maybe_enqueue_main_script() still returns before adding plausible.init(). The new guards can then emit events without initialization. The purchase handlers can also mark an order as tracked even though its event cannot run. Gate these handlers on a state set after the role check and initialization, rather than WordPress's dependency-inclusive enqueued status. (developer.wordpress.org)

InitOptionsTest::testTrackLoggedInUsers() set the global current user to a user with an untracked role and never reset it. Depending on the order the test files run in (in CI it ran before AssetsTest), the Assets tests then ran as that user, so the tracker wasn't enqueued. Reset it afterwards, and have AssetsTest start every test as a logged-out (tracked) visitor.
The events sent through the proxy from the server ignored the "Track analytics for user roles" setting, so e.g. an administrator's add to cart and remove from cart were tracked, while their pageviews weren't: the WooCommerce and EDD add to cart and remove from cart events, EDD's start checkout event, and Contact Form 7 and Gravity Forms submissions. Move the role check from Assets::maybe_enqueue_main_script() into Helpers::is_current_user_tracked() and use it for all of them. The proxy itself doesn't check it, as the proxy health check in the admin uses it. get_user_role() now uses wp_get_current_user(), so the current user is determined in requests where the global isn't set yet.

wp_script_is( 'plausible-analytics', 'enqueued' ) is also true while any enqueued script depends on it, e.g. another plugin's, so for an untracked role the integrations could still add tracking code without plausible.init() (and mark purchases as tracked). Replace main_script_is_enqueued() with main_script_is_initialized(), which checks that the tracker is in the queue itself and that its plausible.init() call was added, which only happens for visitors that are tracked. A logged-in user without a role on the site (e.g. a multisite super admin on a subsite) was treated like a logged-out visitor, so tracked. None of their roles is enabled under "Track analytics for user roles", so they no longer are.

Logged in as a user role that isn't tracked (administrators by default),
window.plausiblewas{init: f}after page load and calls to it threwwindow.plausible is not a function. Logged-out visitors were fine.Cause
For an untracked role,
Assets::maybe_enqueue_main_script()registersplausible-analyticsbut returns before enqueueing it and before adding the inlineplausible.init(). But:FormSubmit::add_js()andAssets::maybe_enqueue_cloaked_affiliate_links_assets()only checked whether the tracker was registered, and enqueued scripts that depend on it, which pulled the tracker onto the page without the init call. The tracker then leaveswindow.plausiblean object;window.plausible(…)) regardless of the role.Fix
Helpers::main_script_is_enqueued(); every place that adds tracking code now checks it instead ofmain_script_is_registered()(kept, as it's public).Testing

Also: a test user leaking into later tests
InitOptionsTest::testTrackLoggedInUsers()replaced the global current user with a user with an untracked role and never reset it. Harmless until now, but depending on the order the test files run in (in CI it ran beforeAssetsTest), the Assets tests then ran as that user, so the tracker wasn't enqueued. It now resets the user, andAssetsTeststarts every test as a logged-out visitor. Also: server-side events for untracked roles
The events sent through the proxy from the server ignored the "Track analytics for user roles" setting: logged in as an administrator, pageviews weren't tracked but add to cart and remove from cart were. Affected: WooCommerce and EDD add to cart / remove from cart, EDD start checkout, Contact Form 7 and Gravity Forms submissions.
Assets::maybe_enqueue_main_script()intoHelpers::is_current_user_tracked(), now used by the tracker and all of these events.Proxy::do_request()itself doesn't check it, as the proxy health check in the admin uses it.Helpers::get_user_role()now useswp_get_current_user(), so the current user is determined in requests where the global isn't set yet.UntrackedRolesTest(fails on the previous code); suite passes on PHP 7.4, 8.3 and 8.5.Woo Add to CartandWoo Remove from Cartbefore, and nothing now. Logged out, pageviews and both cart events are sent as before.Follow-up: CodeRabbit's review
wp_script_is( …, 'enqueued' )is also true while another plugin's enqueued script depends on the tracker, so for an untracked role the guards could still pass withoutplausible.init().main_script_is_enqueued()becamemain_script_is_initialized(): the tracker must be in the queue itself and have itsplausible.init()call, whichAssetsonly adds for tracked visitors. The scenario test now includes another plugin's script depending on the tracker.InitOptionsTestrunning beforeAssetsTest, like in CI). Live: visitors get the tracker and their events, administrators get no Plausible code and send nothing.
