fix(source-control): GitHub requests go through gh's http_unix_socket - #28862
T3 reads its GitHub token with gh auth token, then sends requests straight to api.github.com. It ignores gh's http_unix_socket setting. Some setups give gh only a placeholder token and set http_unix_socket to a local proxy that adds the real credential. In those setups every Pull Requests request now fails with 401. This used to work, while the pull request features ran gh subcommands, which honour the setting. It broke when they moved to the GitHub API transport (#16320). Reported in #24958.
To reproduce: run gh config set http_unix_socket /path/to/proxy.sock --host github.com, have gh hold a token that only the proxy can turn into a real one, then open Pull Requests. Expected: requests go through the proxy, as they do for gh api. Actual: GitHubApiAuthenticationError (401) from api.github.com.
Change
GitHubCredentials gets unixSocket(host), which reads gh config get http_unix_socket --host <host>. It is cached with the same TTL as tokens. Without gh, or without the setting, it returns none.
When a host has a socket, GitHubRequestPolicy sends that request through an undici Agent whose connector (connectUnixSocket) opens the Unix socket. The request is plain HTTP and keeps the API host in the Host header, the way go-gh sends it, so the proxy sees the host and path it expects. The dispatcher goes in through FetchHttpClient.RequestInit, so retries, timeouts and quota handling stay the same. The service keeps one agent per socket path and closes them when its layer ends. Once the socket connects, undici handles its errors.
Windows sends straight to the host, as before, because Node on Windows opens only named pipes, not the AF_UNIX socket files gh uses there. When gh has a socket configured, T3 logs a warning that it skipped it, so a 401 there is easier to explain.
undici is added to packages/source-control-github from the catalog. apps/server already depends on it.
Hosts without http_unix_socket are unchanged.
Scope and approval
#24958 is not triaged yet. I think this qualifies as a focused fix for an obvious bug. It is a regression: T3 honoured gh's own transport setting until #16320 and stopped when the transport changed. The fix restores that one setting for the requests that already use gh's token, and changes nothing else.
Verification
GitHubRest.test.ts, "sends through gh's http_unix_socket as plain HTTP for GitHub's API host": a real HTTP listener on a Unix socket (a named pipe on Windows) checks the request that arrives: GET /user, host api.github.com, the bearer token from gh. Without the fix it fails with GitHubApiAuthenticationError.
GitHubRest.test.ts, "leaves a gh socket's errors to undici once it has connected": emits an error after connecting and checks undici's connect callback ran once. It fails with the listener cleanup removed.
GitHubCredentials.test.ts: unixSocket runs through the gh process double (host normalization, caching, unset setting). On Windows it returns none and logs one warning per lookup.
vp test run in packages/source-control-github: 356 passed. Package typecheck, format, lint and knip are clean.
Manual check on macOS with real gh and http_unix_socket pointing at a credential proxy: the authenticated /user request returned 200 with the right login. This ran on the first version of the PR. The later commits change agent cleanup, error listeners and Windows, not the request path.
Not checked: GitHub Enterprise hosts, and Windows itself (the Windows behaviour is covered only by the unit test above).
T3 takes its GitHub token from `gh auth token` but sent requests
straight to api.github.com, ignoring gh's `http_unix_socket`. When gh
holds only a placeholder and a proxy on that socket adds the real
credential, every request failed with 401. This worked before the
pull request features moved off gh subcommands (pingdotgg#16320).
A host whose gh config sets `http_unix_socket` now has its requests
sent over that socket as plain HTTP, the way go-gh sends them, so the
proxy sees the API host and path. Hosts without the setting are
unchanged.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — GitHub requests now honor gh’s configured local Unix socket, while hosts without that setting retain direct requests. The change follows an existing explicit transport choice and preserves authorization and request safeguards.

@t3dotgg After @juliusmarminge added my requested forward and back navigation to the app, this is my only remaining point of friction in my setup, the PR tooling within t3code can't work for me at all as it stands.
Please let me know if there's anything else you need me to do to become "vouched" or anything like that, we have a lot of common connections in the industry (I use my more locked down @AI-JamesHenry account to drive most changes these days that's why the issue and PR came from that account)
P.S. Personally, I don't really understand how folks are operating with an always accessible gh CLI login available to every process on the machine - feels like an accident waiting to happen 😅 (literally what did happen in the s1ngularity attack in fact).
Instead, I have a custom tailnet proxy through a locked down cloud server such that that gh auth token etc only ever returns a placeholder, and the GitHub token is not accessible directly on the agent's machine at all.
This change is all that's required to get such a setup working within t3code to match the gh CLI.

The GitHub source-control package reads configured Unix socket paths from gh and uses Undici to route API requests through a socket when one is available. Tests cover socket-based REST requests and update credential mocks for the new method.
GitHubCredentials.unixSocket looks up a normalized host’s socket path with a five-minute cache. Empty output and command failures return no socket. Tests check normalization, cached lookups, and unset hosts. Credential mocks implement the new method.
API request dispatch packages/source-control-github/package.json, packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubRequestPolicy.ts, packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubRest.test.ts
The package adds Undici. GitHubRequestPolicy caches dispatchers by socket path and uses one when credentials provide a socket; otherwise, it sends requests as before. REST tests cover requests and responses over a local socket, and connector error handling.

The change routes GitHub requests through gh's configured Unix socket on non-Windows hosts, and existing behavior is unchanged for hosts without the setting. One test should pin a non-Windows platform so it passes on Windows hosts. On Windows, a configured socket is silently ignored, which may make authentication failures harder to diagnose. Neither issue should block merging.

The undici agents for gh's http_unix_socket lived in a module map
that nothing closed. They now belong to the request policy service and
close when its layer ends.
The socket test listens on a named pipe on Windows, where Node does
not use socket files, and GitHubCredentials tests unixSocket through
the gh process double.

The connect error listener stayed attached once the socket connected,

The socket connector moves to module scope as connectUnixSocket so a
test can drive it. The test connects to a real socket, emits an error
afterwards, and checks the connect callback ran only once.

Pin a non-Windows platform in the socket lookup test.
On a Windows host, unixSocket("github.com") returns None and makes no gh config call, so the assertion expecting Option.some("/run/gh.sock") fails. The test does not provide HostProcess.Platform, so it reads the real process.platform. The Windows test below it pins win32 explicitly. Pin a non-Windows platform in this test as well:

Surface skipped socket routing on Windows.
On Windows, unixSocket returns None without running gh config get http_unix_socket. A host that has a configured socket then uses direct dispatch, even though gh uses that socket. With a placeholder token, GitHub returns 401. The 401 does not indicate that a configured socket was skipped, which makes this failure hard to diagnose.
The Windows skip is documented as intentional in the commit message, so this is a diagnostic gap, not a defect in the routing choice. Consider reading the setting on Windows as well, and logging or reporting when a configured socket is skipped.

Windows still sends straight to the host, but now reads the setting
and logs a warning when a socket is configured, so a 401 from a
placeholder token points at the skipped socket.

@coderabbitai Both follow-ups from the last review are in:
Socket lookup test: 2949dd8 pins HostProcess.Platform to linux, so it passes on a Windows host too.
Skipped socket on Windows: e66dfeb reads http_unix_socket on Windows as well. When one is set, it logs a warning that requests go straight to the host, then does exactly that. The Windows test checks the result, the single gh config call across two lookups, and the warning.

sed -n '1,105p' packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubCredentials.test.ts
sed -n '245,307p' packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubCredentials.ts
Length of output: 31245
@AI-JamesHenry Thanks. Source inspection confirms both follow-ups:
The socket lookup test explicitly sets HostProcess.Platform to linux.
On Windows, the cached lookup reads http_unix_socket, warns when configured, and returns None. The test checks two lookup results, one gh config call, and one warning.
These changes address both review concerns. I did not run the tests. Please confirm that CI passes on the latest revision.
