fix(mobile): stop showing "cannot control this task" while permissions load or after a network blip - #28708
On a connection that can control the thread, the mobile composer says "This connection cannot
control this task. You can still edit your draft." while the permissions lookup (/api/auth/session)
has not answered: right after connecting to a slow or busy host, and after a lookup fails on the
network. The banner checks !canOperateThread, which cannot tell "denied" from "not known yet".
#17700 reported this and was closed as covered by #27008. It still reproduces on current main: #27008 re-fetches the session on every reconnect, which opens the window again.
Change
New sessionDeniesScope (client-runtime) and useEnvironmentScopeDenied (mobile): true only when
the host answered with a session that lacks the scope, or rejected the credential (401/403, EnvironmentAuthInvalidError, EnvironmentScopeRequiredError, EnvironmentOperationForbiddenError,
or a relay credential rejected twice).
The composer banner uses it instead of !canOperateThread.
Nothing else changes. Send and stop still need a known grant through the untouched sessionHasScope, so they stay disabled while permissions load, as on main.
Scope and approval
A very small, focused fix for an obvious bug: the app tells users they cannot control a task they
can. One banner condition and the helper behind it; web has no such banner and is untouched. #26205 and #24917 also edit apps/mobile/src/state/session.ts, so expect a trivial conflict with
whichever lands first.
Verification
The composer of one thread on the iOS simulator; the grey line under it is the banner. Left and
middle: a connection with every scope, 8 s after opening the thread while the host delays /api/auth/session by 15 s. Right: a connection paired with only orchestration:read.

Tests in packages/client-runtime:
session.test.ts "denies a scope only once the host has answered without it", against a real
session atom and HTTP client: a pending lookup and a network failure are not a denial; a session
without the scope and a 401 are.
environmentHttpAuth.test.ts "reports persistent session rejection…": the twice-rejected relay
credential counts as a denial.

The unresolved rejection-handling findings leave a consequential question about when previously granted capabilities must be cleared.

Walkthrough
The client runtime now determines whether a session result denies a requested scope. The mobile state module exposes that result, and the thread composer uses it to control its connected-state notice.

Summary
Classify session results and check scopes packages/client-runtime/src/state/session.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/session.test.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/environmentHttpAuth.test.ts
The runtime adds sessionDeniesScope for successful and failed session results. Tests cover missing and present grants, recognized session rejections, and other failures.
Expose scope denial in mobile state apps/mobile/src/state/session.ts
The mobile state module centralizes session lookup by environment and adds useEnvironmentScopeDenied.
Show the notice on explicit scope denial apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadComposer.tsx
The composer checks denial of the orchestration operate scope and uses that result for the connected-state notice.
pingdotgg/t3code#17700: The issue reports a composer warning after a failed session refresh despite a valid grant. This change distinguishes transient lookup failures from scope denial.

The composer can still show a stale permission-denied notice while permissions are being refreshed, so the PR does not fully resolve its stated behavior.

Explanation
The title names the change in plain language: the mobile composer will stop showing the "cannot control this task" banner while permissions load or after a network failure. The raw summary and PR objectives confirm the banner now uses a denial check (useEnvironmentScopeDenied) instead of !canOperateThread, so the title matches the main change. It uses a conventional commit prefix and fits the repository's title guidance.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section states the expected and actual behavior with the reproduction context (connecting to a slow host and a failed /api/auth/session lookup). The Change section explains the new sessionDeniesScope and useEnvironmentScopeDenied helpers and states what remains unchanged. The Verification section lists focused tests, before/after screenshots, a fault-injection table, and what was not checked (a physical device). Two points are weaker: the Scope and approval section argues the 'very small, focused fix' exemption but does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval; it cites a closed issue (#17700) and a related PR (#27008) for context only. The template asks for a link to a triaged issue or maintainer approval, or an explicit exemption explanation. The author gave an exemption explanation, so the section is present, though a maintainer could contest it. The description also names the agent and model used, which the template requests.

Classify rejected DPoP renewal credentials.
If token renewal is rejected while the socket remains connected, authorizeDpopHttp can return a ConnectionBlockedError. environmentHttpAuth.ts wraps it in RemoteEnvironmentAuthFetchError, but this check only accepts session responses. The composer then hides the warning even though the credential was rejected. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Recognize wrapped authentication and permission rejections without treating transient failures as denials. Add a case to the existing renewal test.

…s load or after a network blip
The composer showed the banner for `!canOperateThread`, which is also
true when the session lookup has not answered yet: right after
connecting to a slow host, and after a lookup fails on the network.
A connection that can operate the thread was told it cannot.
The banner now uses `sessionDeniesScope`, which is true only when the
host answered with a session lacking the scope or rejected the
credential (401/403, the declared auth errors, or a relay credential
rejected twice). Send and stop are unchanged: they still need a known
grant through `sessionHasScope`.
