Threads stopped by Codex usage limits currently wait for the natural reset even when their account has banked reset credits. This implements the opt-in automatic recovery requested in #22467; the preference defaults off and is available only for a selected server and native Codex instance.

Before the first consume, the driver refreshes the account identity, exhausted allowance and credit balance under the same locks used by manual redemption, then rechecks Stop and the preference. An account-level ledger (migration 077) owns the attempt across threads and restarts. Ambiguous sends replay its key for a currently armed intent, pre-send failures release the claim, expired windows can be reclaimed, and persisted check times bound probing. Only a provider-confirmed reset plus a fresh clear allowance permits early continuation. Outcome reports preserve the original armed request and use content-based receipt identities; an unsuccessful early continuation cannot suppress natural recovery later.

Web and mobile expose the preference and redemption outcome. Managed Codex instances keep the manual/wait flow.

Validation

  • 219 tests passed across the worker, projection store, runtime layer, Codex limits, reset coordinator, provider registry and agent context budget suites.
  • After the final review fixes, all 22 usage-limit runtime regressions and 86 focused worker/store/coordinator/limits/budget tests passed, including not-cleared → cleared updates using the same caller command ID, natural recovery after a rejected early resume, and adopting an attempt from another thread.
  • Server, web, mobile, contracts and provider-core typechecks passed. Formatting, changed-file lint and git diff --check passed.
  • Claude Opus reviewed the lifecycle in T3 Code; the remaining report-identity, stale-proof, server-scope and pre-send-status findings have been addressed with the final changes.

No live reset credit was consumed. Same-key replay relies on Codex’s documented idempotency contract, also used by its TUI; the closed backend and separate servers sharing one account were not live-tested. Web/mobile visual checks and before/after screenshots remain unverified. No paid model eval was run.

Implemented with Codex Luna and GPT-6.1 Sol in T3 Code (Codex harness); design/review by Claude Opus and Fable through T3 Code.

Unattended threads currently wait for the natural allowance reset even when their account has banked reset credits. Add an off-by-default per-instance opt-in and redeem only under fresh account checks and shared manual/automatic locks.

Keep one durable attempt per account so an eligible thread can adopt a lost response with the same key, failed pre-send claims can be released, and expired windows can recover. Persist provider-confirmed outcomes separately from fresh allowance proof, preserve the armed recovery request, and give later reports and natural continuations distinct receipt identities.

Expose the preference and recovery outcome on web and mobile, restricted to one selected server. Include migration 077 and regressions for replay, Stop races, account locking, and both early and natural continuation.

React Compiler cannot lower a function call used directly as a computed object key. Bind the validated provider instance identifier before constructing reset preference patches on both clients, preserving the existing compiler checks.

Include migration 077 in the two preview-upgrade expectations so the tests cover the new account-attempt ledger without weakening migration-history assertions.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds opt-in use of banked Codex resets and resumes eligible threads after confirmed allowance clearance, without changing existing defaults. Unresolved account-confirmation, redemption-coordination, timeout, and recovery findings remain subject to the separate correctness gate.

Needs human approval because:

Walkthrough

This change adds optional automatic banked reset-credit redemption for native Codex instances. It records account-scoped attempts and redemption results, and permits early usage-limit recovery after a fresh check confirms that a reset cleared the allowance. Settings and recovery interfaces expose the option and its status.

Changes: Codex reset-credit recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Contracts and reset eligibility
packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/driver.ts, apps/server/src/provider/codexUsageLimits.ts, apps/server/src/provider/CodexProvider.ts, apps/server/src/provider/codexUsageLimits.test.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderRegistry.test.ts
Contracts add redemption metadata, settings, and provider result types. Codex usage limits gain account fingerprints and reset-credit eligibility and confirmation checks.
Provider redemption and coordination
apps/server/src/provider/resetCreditCoordinator.ts, apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/CodexDriver.ts, apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/CodexManagedProvider.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderRegistry.ts, apps/server/src/provider/*test.ts, apps/server/src/provider/testFixtures/*, apps/server/src/provider/testUtils/*
The Codex driver and registry expose automatic redemption. The coordinator supports multiple account keys and caller-supplied idempotency keys. Tests and fixtures cover redemption outcomes, retries, and coordination.
Persisted attempts and recovery candidates
apps/server/src/persistence/Migrations.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/Migrations/077_CodexAutoResetAttempts.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/reconcileV2PreviewMigration.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.test.ts
A migration adds account-scoped reset-attempt storage. The projection store adds attempt operations and includes provider and model data in recovery candidates. Tests cover attempt claims and candidate eligibility.
Redemption and recovery worker
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/UsageLimitRecoveryWorker.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/UsageLimitRecoveryWorker.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnControlService.test.ts
The worker processes eligible attempts by account, records and verifies outcomes, schedules retries, and dispatches continuations after a confirmed cleared allowance. Tests cover retries, idempotency, and early-dispatch conditions.
Recovery reports and continuation guards
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/runtimeLayer.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/runtimeLayer.test.ts
The orchestrator records matching redemption reports and preserves them in recovery metadata. Early continuation requires a matching provider and a later check confirming the allowance cleared. Runtime tests cover stop and reset scenarios.
Settings and recovery status
apps/mobile/src/features/settings/*, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/UsageLimitRecoveryCard.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/UsageLimitRecoveryBanner.tsx, packages/shared/src/serverSettings.ts, packages/shared/src/usageFormat.ts, docs/user/usage.md
Mobile and web settings expose per-instance controls for eligible Codex providers. Recovery interfaces display matching redemption outcomes, and the usage guide documents the setting and behavior.

Avoid a real 20-second timeout in this live test.

The "timeout" fixture leaves the consume request unanswered, so Effect.timeout("20 seconds") delays the first call. The server test timeout is 120 seconds, so this is not a test-timeout failure. The fixture supports "error", which immediately produces the same sentUnknown result.

Reset recovery trusted a post-consume allowance without checking its account, overwrote fresh result metadata with cached values, and only revisited one instance after a confirmed reset. Require matching identity and preserve fresh driver evidence while probing each linked account instance independently.

Bound client acquisition and consume together for both redemption paths. Keep ambiguous automatic keys for reconciliation by either caller, expiring them at the same window boundary as the durable ledger; unknown manual keys remain guarded until settled.

Add regressions for mismatched accounts, fresh report metadata, independent instance continuation, ambiguous key reconciliation and expiry, and an app-server that never initialises.
The recovery message switches omitted an outcome accepted by the contract, leaving mobile text empty and a dangling separator on web. Share one formatter between clients, handle alreadyRedeemed with the same fresh-clearance distinction as reset, and declare a string return type so future missing outcomes fail typechecking.

Cover both already-redeemed clearance states and retain the client compiler checks.

Reset preferences enumerated only stored instance overrides, omitting the enabled default Codex instance. Share eligible instance enumeration across clients and include that implicit default without replacing explicit disabled, managed or other-driver configurations.

A missing or stale refresh also erased the account ledger clearance proof. Keep the stored proof when no matching fresh probe exists, while still reporting current uncertainty on the thread and replacing clearance when a fresh check finds exhaustion.

Cover implicit instance discovery and both failed and stale probes, retaining independent continuation for another clear instance.

Automatic redemption only runs for threads eligible for automatic continuation, but the independent reset switches did not describe that prerequisite. State that Resume after usage limits must be enabled on both clients while preserving the user-selected preferences.

Verified in a real dev environment

Partial verification on Linux at 75c8be998f6e7a69dde299b75506bfba63dde28d, compared with github/main at 8b74a69019. Installed both checkouts with vp i and ran one background dev server at a time. Drove the actual web app with the repo's Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome.

  • Added a project pointing to a real git repository through the app. A real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn completed on main, and a follow-up completed on the PR through the same client, server and provider path.
  • Main has no banked-reset control. The PR shows it under Settings > Threads > Usage limits with one environment selected, defaults it off, and explains the resume prerequisite.
  • Enabled banked resets, resume and snooze through the UI. All three remained enabled after reloading. Disabled all three again. The recording shows the controls switching on and off; reload persistence was checked separately.
  • The existing CI reports 28 successful checks at this head. My focused Blacksmith run could not start: its provisioned worker rejected SSH with Permission denied (publickey), including a retry. No substitute local tests were run.

Before, main:

main usage-limit settings without banked resets

After, PR, matching disabled usage-limit preferences:

Command and runtime transcript

Not verified

Automatic credit consumption, allowance confirmation, early continuation, replay/idempotency, Stop races and natural-reset recovery remain unverified. This VM's proxy supports real model turns but the app's actual Usage > Limits > Refresh path reports Codex could not read usage (JSON-RPC -32600) on both main and the PR. It exposes no usable exhausted subscription window or banked-credit balance. I did not inject limits, mock a provider, seed a failed turn or consume a reset credit. The original missing automatic-recovery behavior could therefore not be reproduced end to end on main.

real usage refresh failure blocking reset verification

The combined snooze/reset behavior needs follow-up: source inspection found that ProjectionStore.getLimitRecoveryCandidates excludes armed threads with a future snoozedUntil, while automatic snooze sets it to the natural reset time. This appears to prevent early redemption when both preferences are enabled. This is a source finding, not a reproduced live-limit failure.

Native mobile, Electron desktop, macOS/Windows and remote/tunnel connections were not exercised. No source changes or pushes were made. This is not full verification of the PR's recovery behavior.
