feat: copy shareable thread links that paste as context cards - #28148
Copy thread exports an internal Markdown reference that other applications cannot open. A thread copied from the sidebar should be a usable URL and still paste into T3 Code as a thread context card.
Change
Copy thread now writes a plain public URL containing the owning environment and thread IDs. Shared paste handling recovers the existing card from web or app URLs, including when another app strips clipboard metadata. Web, desktop and mobile reuse their existing navigation and connection paths; connected web navigation stays in the browser. Legacy context references remain supported.
Scope and approval
Tracking report: #28151. Elliot confirmed prior maintainer approval for this direction and scope, but its source URL has not been supplied. The issue requests public confirmation or a link to the existing approval; the issue itself is not evidence of approval.
Verification
Independent verification reported by Maria at d2c280a: Linux real-client report and evidence. The report covers actual clipboard/card navigation and refresh, a submitted card read by a real Codex turn, hosted navigation with remembered opener settings, and 92 focused tests. This was performed by Maria's agent, not rerun by this author. Native mobile, Electron/OS protocol activation, cross-machine/relay/tunnel connections, deployed hosted app, and other providers remain outside that verification.
CI passed on d2c280a, including web tests, all server shards, build/typecheck, native static analysis, Rust, and release smoke. The fingerprint check also passed; a separate additional fingerprint run awaits authorization.
Detekt follow-up: d2c280a. Changed Android paste dispatch to a single final return expression, reducing the helper from three returns to two without altering its branches. Diff whitespace checks and commit hooks pass. Native static analysis passed on d2c280a, verifying Swift lint, ktlint, and Detekt. Swift lint and ktlint passed on 1ed926f before Detekt reported the return-count violation.
Native CI formatting follow-up: 1ed926f. Fixed Kotlin line wrapping reported by the native static-analysis job on cc5c97a; no behavior changes. Diff whitespace checks and commit formatting/lint hooks pass. Local ktlint is unavailable; native CI subsequently verified the correction on d2c280a. Swift lint passed in that CI job.
Latest upstream merge: cc5c97a, incorporating main at 5732bbe. The Android test conflict preserves upstream image-drop tests and both thread-paste regressions. All 69 focused tests pass after integration (36 shared links, 20 desktop/hosted, 13 importer), plus shared/web typechecks, targeted lint, and commit hooks. Dependencies were refreshed from the unchanged lockfile; web typecheck used fresh incremental state. Native Android execution remains unverified.
Handoff fix: b312a35. All 20 focused tests pass (15 desktop coordinator browser tests and 5 hosted decision tests), including failed external opens and manual choice for unknown hosted threads to prevent automatic app/browser loops. Web typecheck, targeted lint, and pre-commit checks pass. Both regressions failed before the fixes.
All 13 importer browser tests pass, including repeated cross-environment collisions and changed titles; both new failure cases were reproduced before the fix. Web typecheck, targeted lint, and pre-commit formatting/unused-code checks pass.
At 9456187, all 36 shared prompt/deep-link tests and 14 desktop coordinator browser tests passed, alongside shared/web typechecks. These cover punctuation round-trips, delayed catalog hydration, and external fallback for unknown environments.
Initial integrated validation at 28416e9 passed 67 focused tests across shared, client-runtime, web paste/hosted navigation, and mobile clipboard logic, plus affected typechecks and lint.
Chrome verification at 28416e9: Copy > Thread writes only text/plain with the public URL; paste creates a titled card; repeating paste creates two inline cards; following a card from another draft opens its source thread. No provider turn was sent.
Opus 5.5 reviewed before publication; all nine findings were addressed. Subsequent bot findings and responses are recorded in the review threads.
Web production build and browser tests passed using a temporary Windows-only correction to the existing office-font alias. The original config is restored and that unrelated correction is excluded from this PR.
Native Android tests were added but not executed. Native iOS/Android paste execution and OS protocol activation remain unverified; the native SDK/toolchain is unavailable.
Visual evidence
Real application captures at 1920 x 911 using an isolated pruned database. Baseline is upstream main 79f1fad; after is the integrated head above. Both used the same temporary Windows dev configuration correction. The built-in Browser tools timed out, so authorized verification used the installed Chrome controller.
Before: the copied internal Markdown reference arrived as a code block in this browser paste path.
After: the copied plain URL pastes as the existing titled thread card.
Configuration
Native paste interception changes require a new mobile binary; they cannot be delivered to an older native editor by OTA alone.
Implemented with gpt-6.1-sol through the Codex harness; reviewed by Claude Opus 5.5 through the Claude harness.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Copy Thread now produces shareable URLs, and pasting supported links automatically creates context cards. These changes to existing copy/paste defaults require human review; a separate blocking finding also identifies desktop startup links being routed before environments finish loading.
Needs human approval because:

Addressed CodeRabbit?s test finding in a740b7e: both large bracket-heavy inputs now contain a thread URL and assert that the scanner creates a context reference. All 23 deep-link tests pass, alongside targeted lint and pre-commit checks. This is a test-only follow-up.
CodeRabbit?s approval-link warning remains open. Elliot previously confirmed maintainer approval. No matching open issue was found; at Elliot's request I filed #28151 and linked it in the PR. The report asks maintainers to record confirmation or link the prior approval. The approval-source requirement remains open; creating this issue does not establish prior approval. Native iOS/Android execution and OS protocol activation remain explicitly unverified in the description.
The Codex review retry failed with an unknown service error and returned no inline findings. No further manual retry is queued. Opus 5.5 completed the required pre-publication review; its nine findings were addressed.
The Macroscope startup race is fixed in 981b850 and its thread is resolved; the subsequent permissions reply contains no new code finding. Upstream workflow authorization and human approval of the copy/paste behavior remain maintainer actions; this account cannot authorize upstream fork workflows.

Pasting or opening a thread link for an environment the desktop app doesn't know about can bounce repeatedly between the browser and the desktop app. If the browser fails to open, nothing tells the user. Pasting a colliding thread link more than once also adds duplicate context cards. These should be addressed before merge.

Two of the three "bracket-heavy" cases never reach the regex.
normalizeThreadClipboard returns early on Line 23 of packages/shared/src/composerContextClipboard.ts unless the text contains app.t3.codes/ or ://threads/. The first two inputs contain neither string. They exit immediately and test nothing. Only the third input exercises the scanning regex.
Append a thread URL to each input so that each case runs the scanner. The first and third cases then overlap, so merge them.
As per path instructions, hold changed tests to docs/internals/testing.md. Flag new tests that break its rules and name the fix.

Mint a fresh ID for every repeated thread paste.

Mint a fresh ID for every repeated thread paste.
threadContextRecord derives the ID from threadId only. On a repeated paste, the existing-record branch skips the new card and rewrites the reference to the existing ID. With the same threadId in another environment, the thread branch keeps the colliding ID, and the draft store rejects the new record. Both cases leave the second reference pointing to the first card, contrary to the repeated-paste behavior and the collision-handling comment.

Addressed the valid collision in CodeRabbit's follow-up in 17222bc. Pasting a thread record whose context ID collides with a different draft record now mints a fresh ID and rewrites the pasted reference to it. The new browser regression failed before the fix by resolving the second environment's reference to the first environment's thread; it passes afterward.
I kept identical-payload deduplication rather than minting a new record for every occurrence: multiple inline cards can safely reference the same stored thread record. The companion browser case verifies that an identical repeated paste returns the existing ID and retains the correct record. Browser verification earlier in this PR also confirmed two visible cards after two identical pastes.
All 12 importer browser tests, web typecheck, targeted lint, and commit formatting/unused-code checks pass. The browser tests used the previously documented temporary Windows font-alias correction, which is restored and excluded. Mobile already reidentifies imported records before merging, so it does not share this collision path.
The updated CodeRabbit description check passes, but public maintainer approval remains unrecorded in #28151; the passing bot check does not establish that approval.

The condition checks `!shouldInterceptTextPaste(text)` before routing the clipboard content to `onPasteContext`. When `shouldInterceptTextPaste(text)` returns true (indicating text paste interception should occur for this text), this condition evaluates to false, skipping `onPasteContext`. Conversely, when `shouldInterceptTextPaste(text)` is false, it routes the text to `onPasteContext`, which is the opposite of the intended interception behavior. Suggested fix: Remove the negation operator (`!`) in front of `shouldInterceptTextPaste(text)` so that paste context is triggered when text paste interception is desired, or verify whether `shouldInterceptTextPaste` is intended to be called without negation.

In `@packages/shared/src/promptLinks.ts` around lines 197 - 198: Deep links for threads lose the leading thread route path. When parsing deep link URLs with custom app schemes (such as `t3code://threads/123`), the hostname of the URL is `threads` and the pathname is `/123`. The function validates the path against `parseThreadPath(url.pathname)` (or `/threads${url.pathname}`) and returns `${url.pathname.replace(/\/$/, "")}${url.search}`. This returns `/123?search...` instead of `/threads/123?search...`, omitting the `/threads` route namespace and breaking navigation in the app. Suggested fix: Prepend `/threads` when constructing the return string (and pass `/threads${url.pathname}` to `parseThreadPath` so it matches the expected thread path structure, or prepend `/threads` directly to match the HTTP route structure).

Checked all seven findings in this report against current head 17222bc. No code changes are warranted:
iOS paste condition:shouldInterceptTextPaste specifically selects the large-text/over-limit onPasteText path, not general context import. Small thread links intentionally use its negation to reach onPasteContext; large text falls through to the later positive check and retains folding/limit handling. Removing the negation would reverse those paths. See the helper and both call sites. Native iOS execution remains unverified as documented.
App URL route: the actual application route is /$environmentId/$threadId, not /threads/$threadId. In t3code://threads/env/thread, threads is the protocol hostname and /env/thread is the correct app path. The suggested t3code://threads/123 lacks an environment and is intentionally rejected. Adding /threads would break the route. See the route and existing round-trip assertions.
Five complexity suggestions:canPerformAction, applyControlledDocument, runAttachmentImport, threadShowingBrowser, and mobile importAttachment are unchanged by this PR. No concrete failure is identified in those functions; splitting them solely to meet a complexity score would add unrelated refactoring. Declining all five suggestions.
Reran the focused shared prompt/deep-link suites: 31 tests pass. Also, the report's claim that CI passed is incorrect: CI and six other latest-head runs are still action_required, awaiting upstream workflow authorization. A review bot's readiness label does not replace maintainer approval or executed CI.

When a valid public thread URL names an environment absent from the desktop catalog, openLink calls openInBrowser. That creates a local scratch thread and opens the URL in an integrated preview. Copied URL segments now percent-encode punctuation that the plain-text scanner treats as delimiters. Expanded the existing round-trip test to paste IDs containing literal escapes and trailing punctuation; four cases failed before the fix and now preserve the exact thread identity. Both environment and thread segments use the same encoding.
Unknown-environment desktop thread links now use the existing external-browser API instead of creating a scratch-thread integrated preview. Both public HTTPS and app-scheme regression cases failed before the fix and pass afterward, without scratch-thread creation or in-app navigation. Known-environment navigation remains covered by the existing coordinator tests.
Validation: all 36 shared prompt/deep-link tests and all 14 desktop coordinator browser tests pass; shared/web typechecks, targeted lint, and commit formatting/unused-code checks pass. Browser tests used the previously documented temporary Windows font-alias correction; the original configuration is restored and excluded from this commit. Native OS protocol activation remains unverified.

- Line 229: Catch failures from the `shell.openExternal` call that opens
`threadDeepLink(bareThread)` and pass the failure to `reportFailure`, so the
user is notified when opening the link fails.
- Line 229: Update the threadDeepLink handoff in DesktopWebLinkCoordinator so
opening an unavailable environment cannot trigger a redirect back to desktop and
repeat the cycle; make the hosted landing offer a recoverable choice instead of
automatically redirecting when the target environment is unavailable.

Resolved the conflict with main in cc5c97a using a normal merge of upstream 5732bbe. The only content conflict was Android ComposerPasteTest.kt; both upstream image-drop coverage and the thread-paste regressions are retained.
After integration: all 69 focused tests pass (36 shared link tests, 20 desktop/hosted tests, 13 importer browser tests), shared/web typechecks pass, and targeted lint plus all commit hooks pass. Refreshed dependencies from the lockfile and used fresh incremental state for web typecheck. The documented temporary Windows font-alias correction is restored; native Android/iOS execution and OS protocol activation remain unverified. Public maintainer approval and workflow authorization remain pending.
Fixed the native static-analysis failure in 1ed926f. ktlint reported wrapping/line-length violations on the added thread-link condition and URL test list; both are now split across lines. This is formatting-only. Diff whitespace checks and commit formatting/lint hooks pass; local ktlint is unavailable, so native CI verification remains pending. Swift lint already passed.
The fingerprint workflow had progressed to an active job when checked, so its earlier action-required notification no longer reflects its current state. CodeRabbit added no new code finding; the public maintainer-approval-source requirement remains pending.
The latest native job passed Swift lint and ktlint, then failed Detekt ReturnCount on pasteContextOrImages (three returns; limit two). Fixed in d2c280a by making the final thread-link/fallback branches one return expression. Dispatch behavior is unchanged. Diff whitespace checks and commit formatting/lint hooks pass. Local Detekt/native execution remains unavailable; the native CI rerun must verify the correction.
Verified latest head d2c280a: CI passes, including Test Web, native static analysis, build/typecheck, lint, all server shards, Rust, release smoke, and the final Check job. The fingerprint check passed. A separate additional fingerprint run is action_required with zero jobs; the other duplicate run was cancelled.
No unresolved review threads remain. CodeRabbit's risk summary still describes older fixes already addressed. Public maintainer approval remains unrecorded in #28151. GitHub reports the PR as UNSTABLE rather than fully clear; no bypass or merge attempted. Monitoring continues.
verified head d2c280a4d9aa2229c17d7967bb07e114380eb3f5 on linux with repo playwright, google chrome, and real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns. no mocks, fixtures, or demo data. no source changes were needed.
reproduced on github/main (ce9e016406): copy thread writes an internal context reference; a plain public thread URL pastes as text.
created a project pointing at a real git repo and a source thread through the app. its codex turn saved ORCHID-4729. reused that isolated app-created state for matching before/after verification.
on the pr, copy thread writes only text/plain containing the public environment/thread URL. actual clipboard paste creates a titled card. repeated paste creates two inline cards; clicking a card opens the source. destination and source refreshes preserve history and navigation.
submitted a pasted card in a second thread. codex called read thread and returned ORCHID-4729, which was absent from the destination prompt.
restarted the same isolated server with the dev origin configured as the hosted app, then paired through the hosted connection flow. known links and refreshes stay in the browser even with the app opener remembered; unknown environments retain the manual chooser.
blacksmith: all 92 focused tests passed across shared links, clipboard handling, thread references, web import, desktop coordination, hosted decisions, and mobile clipboard logic. the worker needed its playwright browser installed before the successful run.
before: plain URL stays text on main.
after: the same URL becomes the source thread card.
Not verified
native ios/android paste interception, electron/os protocol activation, macos/windows behavior, separate-machine/relay/tunnel connections, and the deployed public hosted app were not exercised. hosted navigation used the actual pr client with a configured local hosted origin. other providers were not exercised. uploaded video playback and seeking passed in chrome.
Thanks for the real-client verification, including submitting a pasted card and recovering the source-only marker through Codex. Added the report to the PR verification section, attributed to your agent and preserving the native, OS protocol, cross-machine, deployed-hosted, and provider coverage limits. No code changes were requested by the report. The PR still documents the pending public scope-approval source separately.

Problem
Importer identity fix: 7c6221e on Windows.
