Problem

The current compactor deletes superseded events but retains older thread history after projections hold current state. Conversation activity keeps adding events to the log.

Change

This ports Theo's retention implementation from #22630.

The compactor deletes eligible thread events older than 24 hours in 50-row pages. It keeps the newest event in every stream and each thread's thread.created and thread.deleted events. It also keeps running run.updated events, full-prompt roots referenced by retained events, events with command receipts, and events for unfinished legacy imports. It writes each thread's highest deleted sequence as its replay floor in the same transaction. A cursor below that floor has incomplete history.

If the thread still exists, the server sends a snapshot when its cursor is below the floor. A deleted thread replays its retained thread.deleted event. A shell cursor below the highest thread floor also receives a snapshot. The server reads the bounded shell replay before sending it and checks floors again. If pruning commits during the read, the server sends a snapshot.

Migration 77 adds the floor table. Older databases without it keep supersession-only compaction. Projection rebuild refuses after the first prune. Upgraded servers run the first retention pass after the one-minute startup delay. Background compaction keeps the existing 10% pacing and turn-item compaction. Retention leaves project events and thread records in place. This changes no client contracts.

Review ProjectionMaintenance.ts anchor selection with the floor checks in ws.ts; they define when clients can replay or need a snapshot.

Scope and approval

Rebased port of the maintainer-authored #22630, credited to Theo. This permanently deletes historical events on existing installations; reverting the code cannot restore them. Maintainer approval of this retention default is still required. Builds predating retention cannot safely open a pruned database. Provider-turn compaction remains separate in #28109.

Verification

vp run check:changed passed formatting, lint, knip, GraphQL checks, typecheck, and 45 tests across 11 files.

On a copied database with 95 threads and 80,698 events, compaction removed 64,729 events and left 15,969. ProjectionStore.getThreadProjection matched for all 95 threads; projection verification and SQLite quick_check passed. The proof compared reads without rebuilding projections.

I did not run the full test suites or build locally. CI will run them.

Port by GPT-6 Luna; integration and prompt-anchor fix by GPT-6.1 Sol, in the Codex harness through T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This introduces automatic one-day thread-event retention while preserving current projections and falling back to snapshots for expired cursors. The new default needs human review because pruning permanently removes history and limits projection recovery and safe downgrades.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

Walkthrough

The change adds one-day retention for eligible orchestration events, records per-thread replay floors, and updates resume handling to send snapshots when cursors fall below those floors. It also adds a migration, retention tests, and updated documentation.

Migration 77 creates the replay-floor table. The event store reads replay floors. Database storage uses history-retained-at for compaction timing, and migration tests include migration 77.

Compaction prunes eligible expired events and updates replay floors in a transaction. Rebuild fails when replay-floor records exist. Tests cover retention anchors, deleted threads, projections, and verification. Documentation and the completion message describe retention behavior.
Resume fallback
apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/ws.eventHistoryRetention.test.ts
Resume handlers check replay floors before and after loading events. When a thread shell exists and the requested range has expired, the handler sends a snapshot. Tests cover replay-floor changes during resume.

Remove the internal term "replay floor" from the user documentation.

Users cannot act on "replay floor". It is an implementation detail. State the downgrade risk in terms of what the user sees.

Write replay floors only for events that were deleted.

When a new prompt reference appears after the page read, the DELETE skips that candidate at Lines 423-434. This loop still upserts the floor collected before deletion. The floor can therefore claim that history was pruned when the candidate remains in orchestration_events. This can force unnecessary snapshot replay and can make rebuild fail even when no event was deleted for that floor. Derive each floor from the rows returned by DELETE, including the candidate-to-thread mapping.

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified as-is at d1ae8dcc920f363ecc6785b043133e7110d8bd15. No code changes or pushes.

  • Ran github/main (54c5f25249) in a separate worktree, then the exact PR head. Installed each with vp i. Used isolated state and one dev server at a time, with actual ports 16733/8693.
  • Drove the web client using Playwright from the repo and /usr/bin/google-chrome. Added a real git project through the UI, completed real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns, wrote/read a marker file, continued the conversation, and deleted a separate thread through the UI. No mocks, fixtures, or direct event/timestamp edits.
  • Accelerated only the server process wall clock with libfaketime, leaving monotonic time and the VM/browser clocks unchanged. Main at +28 hours removed 28 superseded events but retained old assistant event 152, reproducing the missing age retention. The PR at +21 hours left retention floors empty. After recent app activity, its normal background pass at +28 hours removed 81 events (183 to 102). Event 152 disappeared; seven-hour-old assistant event 195 survived. All 18 projection tables matched exactly before/after, SQLite quick_check returned ok, and creation/deletion and running-run anchors survived.
  • Sent authenticated WebSocket resume requests using recorded client cursors. Thread cursor 134 below floor 159 and shell cursor 133 received full snapshots followed by synchronized. At floor 159, thread replay returned events; shell replay returned metadata enrichment and deltas. Deleted-thread cursor 100 below floor 127 replayed thread.deleted at sequence 136.
  • Restored normal process time and restarted. Cold-opened the retained conversation, expanded its original command output, and opened the original checkpoint diff with the marker visible. A new real Codex turn read the same file and rendered AFTER-PRUNE-28144 retention-marker-28144.
  • Blacksmith ran the existing retention, anchor, WebSocket retention, and database-storage tests: 10 tests across 4 files passed. The exact head also has 28 completed successful/skipped CI checks.

Native iOS/Android and Electron shells, macOS/Windows, other providers, and relay/tunnel connections were outside this Linux web pass. Real native-subagent promptSequence anchors and unfinished legacy imports were not generated. No runtime prune/replay race overlap was established; the focused tests cover those races. The 24-hour boundary used process clock advancement, not a natural day-long wait. Explicit resume probes used the real WebSocket protocol; the UI was separately cold-opened and exercised. This verification does not supply approval for the irreversible retention default.
