Problem

Claude Code deletes transcripts after 30 days by default, leaving the server's usage cache as the only remaining record. T3 prunes that cache after 92 days, so older usage history is lost for good, with no way to keep it.

Change

Add usageHistoryRetentionDays to each environment's userdata/settings.json: a positive integer or "unlimited", default 92 as before.

Lowering retention prunes the server cache on the next scan and Cursor's cache on its next successful refresh. Cursor backfills a widened horizon when the next read finds insufficient coverage, then resumes incremental fetching. The final prune runs under the settings write lock, so a scan started under an older policy cannot prune once a newer policy is current. If settings.json cannot be decoded, retention is treated as unlimited until it is valid again. History already pruned and no longer available from the provider is not recovered.

Scope and approval

This is a focused configuration option for an existing capability: the server already keeps scanned usage history in a cache and prunes it by age, and the option controls only how long that cache keeps entries. It changes no product default, adds no settings UI, no period and no view; web, desktop and mobile still show up to 90 days, and the existing usage summary request already reads whatever history is retained for the window it asks for. Setting 365 preserves a year on the server without displaying a year in the app.

Refs #13810 (the 1-year / all-time request). This PR implements only server-side retention and adds no period or view; that broader direction remains open there.

Verification

vp run check:changed passes. Focused coverage: default/365/unlimited retention, deleted transcripts and restart, malformed settings, concurrent policy changes (a regression for an obsolete scan finishing after retention widens, failing before the fix), very large day counts clamped to epoch zero, cutoff propagation, and Cursor widening followed by incremental reuse.

Real UsageService benchmark: 400 synthetic daily Claude transcripts, 200,000 records, 49.35 MB input; M2 Max, macOS arm64, Node 26.12.1. Medians of three fresh processes per setting, generated temporary homes, no real provider data or API calls:

Measurement Default 92 days Unlimited
Retained records / cache 46,000 / 3.23 MiB 200,000 / 14.52 MiB
Cold full-history scan 533 ms 553 ms
Warm 90-day scan 28 ms 39 ms
Cache reload scan after transcript cleanup 70 ms 200 ms
Post-GC heap after cold scan 150 MiB 200 MiB
Peak process RSS 523 MiB 602 MiB

Cold scan ranges overlap; these figures do not establish a speed improvement. Unlimited retention permits continued disk and memory growth. Real Cursor API backfill performance was not measured. No UI change, so no screenshots.

Model: gpt-6-astra via Codex CLI, orchestrated by Claude Code.

Provider transcript cleanup can leave the usage cache as the only long-term
record, but environments cannot retain it beyond the fixed 92-day policy.

Add an environment-owned usageHistoryRetentionDays setting with the unchanged
92-day default, positive day counts, and unlimited retention. Preserve history
on settings decode failure, prevent obsolete scans from pruning under a newer
policy, and clamp cutoffs to epoch zero. Backfill widened Cursor horizons on
read and prune its cache at merge. Keep existing client views unchanged.

Cover retained history, restart, concurrent policies and provider cutoffs with
focused tests, and document the server retention benefit and current view limits.

Model: gpt-6-astra via Codex CLI, orchestrated by Claude Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Adds configurable usage-history retention while preserving the normal 92-day default. Invalid settings now cause unlimited retention, a default-policy change requiring human judgment about longer data retention and resource consumption.

Walkthrough

The change adds configurable usage-history retention, defaulting to 92 days, with support for positive day counts or unlimited retention. Usage scans and Cursor account-cache coverage use the configured retention boundary.

Changes: Usage History Retention

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define retention settings
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, apps/server/src/serverSettings.ts, apps/server/src/serverSettings.test.ts
ServerSettings accepts positive integer retention days or "unlimited", defaults to 92 days, and allows patches to update the setting. Settings decode failures use "unlimited" retention.
Apply retention to usage scans
apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.ts, apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.test.ts, docs/user/usage.md
Usage scans derive the cutoff from configured retention. Cache pruning occurs only if the current retention setting matches the scan snapshot. Tests cover retention values, restart behavior, pruning, and a scan race. The documentation describes retention behavior and configuration.
Align Cursor cache coverage
packages/provider-cursor/src/server/accountCache.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/CursorUsageAccounts.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/accountCache.test.ts
Cursor cache freshness accounts for the retention boundary. Cache merges mark coverage changes when the boundary advances or coverage widens.

Explanation

The title "feat(server): configurable usage history retention" matches the main change: a new server setting, usageHistoryRetentionDays, that controls how long scanned usage history is kept. It follows the conventional commit style the template requests. It is concise and specific, and it names the scope (server) and the feature.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is thorough and follows the template sections. Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification are all present and substantively filled. The Problem section explains the 30-day Claude transcript deletion and the 92-day cache pruning. The Change section covers the new setting, pruning behavior, the settings write lock, and the decode-failure fallback. Scope and approval explains why this is focused configuration of an existing capability and links issue #13810, which the template asks for. Verification lists focused tests, the check run, and a benchmark table, and it states what was not measured. The template asks for the model and harness used, and the description includes that line. The only gap is that the author reports the 'vp run check:changed' result without a separate manual check, which is acceptable here because the PR has no UI change.

Recheck coverage after a shared refresh.

If a wider-retention scan arrives during a narrower refresh, startRefresh returns the existing deferred. An awaitRefresh scan then returns the narrower cache with status ok, without fetching the missing history. Recheck coverage after the shared refresh and start a wider fetch when needed.

Consider making cache pruning best-effort.

Pruning is housekeeping. The scan and aggregation are complete at this point. If withSettingsSnapshot fails, for example because the secret store fails while re-materializing settings after a concurrent settings write, the whole readSummary call fails with scanFailed. The in-flight Deferred also fails, and schedulePersist does not run. The old unconditional prune could not fail the summary.

Log a warning and skip the prune instead. The next scan prunes again. The same UsageReadError is also built in readSettings, so this change removes the duplicate construction.

+ Effect.logWarning("failed to read settings before pruning usage cache", { cause }),
+ ),
       );

The change intentionally maps this failure to UsageReadError. Keep the current behavior if you want a settings failure to fail the scan.

🤖 Addressed both CodeRabbit findings:

  • CursorUsageAccounts.ts shared refresh: after awaiting a refresh started by a narrower scan, accountSource now rechecks isCursorCacheFresh for its own retentionStartMs and starts one wider fetch when coverage is still missing (bounded to a single recheck; skipped when the refresh recorded a failure). Test: "widens Cursor history after awaiting a shared narrower refresh" (fails before the fix). Commit 77dc88b.
  • UsageService.ts prune: pruning is now best-effort. A settings read failure logs a warning and skips the prune instead of failing readSummary; the next scan prunes again. Commit 4705330.

Focused tests and check:changed pass on the branch (model: gpt-6-astra via Codex CLI for the Cursor fix, orchestrated by Claude Code).
