fix(codex): a proxied Codex login keeps its email, so Limits shows it once - #25784
Codex can run against a custom model provider that does not require OpenAI auth, for example CLIProxyAPI configured with model_provider and requires_openai_auth=false. In that setup account/read answers { account: null, requiresOpenaiAuth: false }, while account/rateLimits/read still reports the saved ChatGPT login's limits and accountId. The provider then has a workspace but no email. Limits only merges reports by email (plus workspace), so one subscription showed up once per environment and per instance. In the reported case, four Weekly segments all read 93%, reset in 6d 19h, and held one reset credit.
Change
When account/read returns no account, the Codex probe reads the saved login's id_token claims (email and chatgpt_account_id) from auth.json. It reads that file in the codexHome the app-server reports from initialize, so wrappers and CODEX_HOME overrides resolve to the file Codex actually uses. It sets auth.email only when both of these hold:
config/read shows that Codex stores credentials in the file: cli_auth_credentials_store is file, which is also Codex's default. With keyring or auto, a stale auth.json may belong to another seat in the same workspace.
The token's chatgpt_account_id equals the accountId from the usage read.
Otherwise behavior is unchanged: the instance keeps no email and stays a separate entry. The client is untouched: once each host reports email and workspace, the existing Limits matching merges the duplicates. auth.status stays unknown, as before.
I considered keying emailless reports by workspace alone on the client and rejected it: ChatGPT Team/Business seats share a workspace id, so distinct seats and their reset credits could be merged.
Scope and approval
This is a small, focused fix with no prior issue. Limits already intends one entry per account, and this restores the identity it merges on for a supported Codex configuration. It changes one adapter function's identity input and adds no settings, contract fields, or UI.
Verification
At current head 35add0b85790b1dc9300e123581de430ce25d05a, saved ID-token claims accept Codex-compatible JSON null for the optional top-level email, profile object and profile email. Top-level email still takes precedence, with a profile fallback when it is absent or null. All-null email claims produce no email. Account-ID and file-store guards are unchanged.
The existing real-probe regression now includes four null shapes. Before the schema fix, a null top-level email discarded a valid profile email; that assertion failed, then passed after the fix. vp run check:changed ec0aa12a791a30b3dbccfeb3f65174a84214559e passed: 56 tests across three files, three affected package typechecks, formatting, lint, knip and server GraphQL checks.
All eight required hosted checks passed at this head. Other checks and reviews must be assessed at this revision; the 33 passing checks at ec0aa12 are historical. CodeRabbit explicitly marks the nullable-claims finding as addressed in 35add0b. The shared-workspace/seat-identity matching concern still requires human resolution. No new installed-CLI, cross-seat or integrated client pass is claimed. This PR remains excluded from the ready-for-review batch pending that resolution.
Follow-up implementation and verification: GPT-6.1 Sol, Codex harness through T3 Code.
Earlier profile-email verification
Recorded head: ec0aa12a791a30b3dbccfeb3f65174a84214559e. Saved ID-token parsing now matches Codex's top-level-then-nested-profile email precedence. The existing real-probe regression tests both claims with different emails (top-level wins), plus a profile-only token. The profile-only case failed before the fix with no email and now passes. Nonempty account-ID and file-store restrictions remain.
vp run check:changed e93189f3a8586bbd98cbd1c236ff7333c602df0c passed: 56 tests in three files, three affected package typechecks, formatting, lint, knip and server GraphQL checks. All 33 checks passed at this head. CodeRabbit’s new nullable-claim finding is valid: optional strings/profile currently reject JSON null and can discard a valid alternate email. A failing-first extension of the existing real-probe regression and a narrow nullable-schema repair are queued for validation; no fix is published yet. Macroscope’s updated verdict still requires human resolution of the identity-matching rule: shared workspace IDs alone cannot distinguish seats. The source-based explanation below remains available for review; this profile-email parsing update does not resolve that approval gate or establish a new installed-CLI, cross-seat or client verification pass. This PR remains excluded from the ready-for-review batch pending that resolution; required-check success is not approval.

Earlier read-guard verification
Current head: e93189f3a8586bbd98cbd1c236ff7333c602df0c. The optional saved-login read is skipped unless usage includes a nonempty account ID. The existing real-probe regression now includes a whitespace ID and proves the auth file is not read: before the fix it made one read instead of zero, then passes with the guard.
vp run check:changed 739c7d88e4af31cf3b7778c7dec538f5511e244c passed: 56 tests across three files, three affected package typechecks, formatting, lint, knip and server GraphQL checks. Hosted checks and reviews must be assessed at this new head. No integrated client pass was repeated.

Review follow-up at 739c7d8
At the earlier 739c7d8 checkpoint, all eight required checks passed and CodeRabbit was still running. The unnecessary saved-login read was confirmed there and is fixed in current e93189f; current hosted review readiness remains pending.
The shared-workspace finding needs a distinction: the workspace match is a consistency check, not proof of seat identity. The fallback relies on Codex using the file credential store. Codex's native account/rateLimits/read obtains auth from its own auth manager and constructs a backend client from that auth; it does not take usage identity from the custom model provider. See upstream account processor at 67f0994. Keyring/auto remain excluded because their auth file can be stale. This source check was not a new installed-CLI runtime pass. The current probe also captures spawnedAtMs before client setup, so its discovery deadline already includes setup time.
Earlier evidence
New regression test in apps/server/src/provider/ProviderRegistry.test.ts, "names a proxied login by its saved ChatGPT email only when Codex reads that file". It drives the real probe (checkCodexProviderStatus) against the repo's mock app-server (codexCollabMockPeer, extended with scripted codexHome, null account, rate limits, and config). It covers three cases: matching account with file store (email set), keyring store (no email), and a different account id (no email).
Against main's CodexProvider.ts it fails with expected undefined to equal 'same@example.com'.
With the store check removed, it fails on the keyring case.
With this change, vp test run src/provider/ProviderRegistry.test.ts -t "proxied login|checkCodexProviderStatus" passes all 4 tests. vp test run src/provider/ProviderInstanceRegistry.test.ts, the other user of the mock peer, passes all 9.
vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck of 2 packages, and tests beside the changes.
Runtime check on macOS: checkCodexProviderStatus ran against a real Codex CLI behind CLIProxyAPI (a wrapper adding -c model_provider=... and requires_openai_auth=false). Email and account id are hashed below:
Against the same CLI, config/read reports cli_auth_credentials_store: "file" by default and "keyring" when it is set through -c.
Not checked: a captured multi-environment Limits page after the change, and Windows. The new test returns early on Windows like the other tests that use the mock peer, because that peer launches through a Bash wrapper. Remote environments need this server version before their entries merge.
The work was done by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code inside T3 Code, with independent review by GPT-6.1 Sol through T3 Code.
… once
Codex behind a model provider that does not require OpenAI auth (e.g.
CLIProxyAPI) answers account/read with no account, while its usage still
comes from the saved ChatGPT login. Without an email, Limits could not tell
that hosts running this setup share one subscription and showed it once per
host.
When account/read has no account and Codex stores credentials in a file,
read the email from the saved login's id_token in the app-server's own
CODEX_HOME, and use it only when its ChatGPT account id matches the one the
usage read reports.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The change recovers a saved Codex email to consolidate proxied usage in Limits. An unresolved review concern notes that shared workspace IDs may associate another seat’s email with that usage, requiring resolution of the identity-matching assumption.

Walkthrough
The Codex provider can read validated email and account ID claims from auth.json when backend account data is absent and file-backed credentials are configured. It uses the saved email only when the usage account ID matches the saved account ID.
The snapshot now carries validated email and account ID claims. The probe reads them only when the backend account is absent, config is available, file-backed credentials are selected, and the usage account ID is present. The probe derives serviceTier from the config response.

Same setup as #23054 (three environments, one hub, requires_openai_auth = false). Reading the email from auth.json's id_token when account/read comes back empty gives the native entry the same key the hub entry already has, so it merges even in the Team-seat case where account ids collide. It is also the same claim the cliproxy source already reads from the hub's credential files, so there is precedent for it in-tree. One case to keep in mind: an auth.json with auth_mode apikey has no id_token, and that is the recommended way to run a proxied instance today, so the probe should just fall through there rather than warn.

Do not infer the seat email from chatgpt_account_id.
chatgpt_account_id identifies the Team workspace, not the authenticated seat. A proxy can report the shared workspace while storedLogin.email belongs to another seat. This fallback assigns that email to the proxy report. Limits then uses the same driver, email, and workspace key, so the proxy usage can be grouped with the local seat’s report.

Read the profile email as a fallback when the top-level email is absent.
111-111: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Read the profile email as a fallback when the top-level email is absent.
Codex takes the top-level email claim first. It falls back to the email field inside the nested https://api.openai.com/profile object. The key is not a flat https://api.openai.com/profile.email claim. This reader requires a top-level email. If an ID token has only the profile email, decoding fails, the saved login is not read, and the matching proxied login keeps no auth.email. Limits can then show that login again.
Decode the top-level email first, then the profile email.

partial runtime pass on Linux at 35add0b85790b1dc9300e123581de430ce25d05a, compared with github/main at 15fe283272. the central dedupe behavior remains unverified for the reason below.
installed dependencies with vp i in both checkouts and ran one background dev server at a time, stopping main before starting this head. used isolated T3 state and Playwright from the repository with /usr/bin/google-chrome. created a project pointing at the real repository through Add project → Local folder, then submitted the same prompt with Codex gpt-6.1-sol on each revision. both completed with codex real-provider verification ok.; no mocks, demo data, or fabricated credentials were used.
on the PR, opened Usage → Limits and refreshed: the unavailable-usage error remained visible. switching to Tokens displayed real Codex session usage, and closing Usage returned to the completed conversation. this verifies the missing-login path and neighboring turn/usage navigation, not subscription deduplication.
focused existing checks ran through blacksmith-check: vp test run apps/server/src/provider/ProviderRegistry.test.ts -t 'proxied login|checkCodexProviderStatus' passed 10 tests, with 40 outside the filter skipped. the saved-login regression uses the existing scripted peer and is not installed-provider integration proof. hosted status reported 33 successful checks, 0 failing, 0 pending. no code changes or pushes.

the original duplicate-subscription bug could not be reproduced on main, and saved-email recovery/deduplication could not be verified on this head. this VM's model proxy supports real turns but has no saved ChatGPT login in the Codex home returned by initialize. the installed CLI itself refuses native subscription limits. a sanitized direct codex app-server JSON-RPC transcript confirms:
a genuine file-backed ChatGPT login whose native rate-limit read succeeds is needed to complete the proof: configure two real provider instances using that login, observe duplicate Limits entries on main, then one entry on this head. keyring/auto, mismatched account IDs, shared-workspace cross-seat identity, and multiple remote environments were not exercised with real credentials. the existing human identity-matching concern remains unresolved by this pass. native desktop, iOS/Android, macOS, and Windows were not exercised.

Problem
Codex can run against a custom model provider that does not require OpenAI auth, for example CLIProxyAPI configured with
model_providerandrequires_openai_auth=false. In that setupaccount/readanswers{ account: null, requiresOpenaiAuth: false }, whileaccount/rateLimits/readstill reports the saved ChatGPT login's limits andaccountId. The provider then has a workspace but no email. Limits only merges reports by email (plus workspace), so one subscription showed up once per environment and per instance. In the reported case, four Weekly segments all read 93%, reset in 6d 19h, and held one reset credit.Change
When
account/readreturns no account, the Codex probe reads the saved login'sid_tokenclaims (emailandchatgpt_account_id) fromauth.json. It reads that file in thecodexHomethe app-server reports frominitialize, so wrappers andCODEX_HOMEoverrides resolve to the file Codex actually uses. It setsauth.emailonly when both of these hold:config/readshows that Codex stores credentials in the file:cli_auth_credentials_storeisfile, which is also Codex's default. Withkeyringorauto, a staleauth.jsonmay belong to another seat in the same workspace.chatgpt_account_idequals theaccountIdfrom the usage read.Otherwise behavior is unchanged: the instance keeps no email and stays a separate entry. The client is untouched: once each host reports email and workspace, the existing Limits matching merges the duplicates.
auth.statusstaysunknown, as before.I considered keying emailless reports by workspace alone on the client and rejected it: ChatGPT Team/Business seats share a workspace id, so distinct seats and their reset credits could be merged.
Scope and approval
This is a small, focused fix with no prior issue. Limits already intends one entry per account, and this restores the identity it merges on for a supported Codex configuration. It changes one adapter function's identity input and adds no settings, contract fields, or UI.

The existing real-probe regression now includes a whitespace ID and proves the auth file is not read: before the fix it made one read instead of zero, then passes with the guard.vp run check:changed 739c7d88e4af31cf3b7778c7dec538f5511e244cpassed: 56 tests across three files, three affected package typechecks, formatting, lint, knip and server GraphQL checks. 739c7d8checkpoint, all eight required checks passed and CodeRabbit was still running. The unnecessary saved-login read was confirmed there and is fixed in currente93189f; current hosted review readiness remains pending. The shared-workspace finding needs a distinction: the workspace match is a consistency check, not proof of seat identity. The fallback relies on Codex using the file credential store. Codex's native
account/rateLimits/readobtains auth from its own auth manager and constructs a backend client from that auth; it does not take usage identity from the custom model provider. See upstream account processor at67f0994. Keyring/auto remain excluded because their auth file can be stale. This source check was not a new installed-CLI runtime pass. The current probe also capturesspawnedAtMsbefore client setup, so its discovery deadline already includes setup time.Earlier evidence
New regression test in
apps/server/src/provider/ProviderRegistry.test.ts, "names a proxied login by its saved ChatGPT email only when Codex reads that file". It drives the real probe (checkCodexProviderStatus) against the repo's mock app-server (codexCollabMockPeer, extended with scriptedcodexHome, null account, rate limits, and config). It covers three cases: matching account with file store (email set), keyring store (no email), and a different account id (no email).main'sCodexProvider.tsit fails withexpected undefined to equal 'same@example.com'.vp test run src/provider/ProviderRegistry.test.ts -t "proxied login|checkCodexProviderStatus"passes all 4 tests.vp test run src/provider/ProviderInstanceRegistry.test.ts, the other user of the mock peer, passes all 9.vp run check:changedpasses: format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck of 2 packages, and tests beside the changes.Runtime check on macOS:
checkCodexProviderStatusran against a real Codex CLI behind CLIProxyAPI (a wrapper adding-c model_provider=...andrequires_openai_auth=false). Email and account id are hashed below:Against the same CLI,

The new test returns early on Windows like the other tests that use the mock peer, because that peer launches through a Bash wrapper. Remote environments need this server version before their entries merge.
