fix(desktop): renew expired local bearer sessions - #25024
Desktop's main process and renderer cache expired bearer tokens indefinitely. Renewing the bearer also fails for legacy backends because their bootstrap grant expires after 24 hours, before the 30-day bearer session.
Change
Reuse the main-process bearer until 60 seconds before expiry, then exchange once under the existing semaphore. Derive rotating bootstrap tokens at exchange time, including after suspend.
Share only pending renderer reads so HTTP requests can obtain the renewed bearer.
Validate the configured legacy desktop credential for the backend's lifetime, using the same short-lived grant path as rotating credentials. Remove the legacy-only seeded-grant cache. Rotating secrets retain precedence; pairing-link expiry, consumption, proof binding, revocation, and dev-startup expiry retain their existing path.
Verification
Four regressions fail against current main before the fix; 25 other focused cases pass.
All 29 focused cases pass with the fix, including cached/concurrent reads, renewal, a 31-day suspend with a rotating secret, renderer HTTP authorization headers, and real auth/session services rejecting an expired bearer then accepting a renewed legacy session.
vp run check:changed passes through blacksmith-check: format, lint, knip, GraphQL checks, affected-package typechecks, and focused tests.
Another 20 existing session, HTTP auth, and auth-policy tests pass through blacksmith-check.
No visual UI changes. Live Electron reconnect, OS suspend, Windows/WSL, and macOS are unverified. Authentication credential lifetime changes require Maria's review.
CI and review status
Both independent GPT-6.1-Sol reviewers found no actionable issues and returned merge-ready for 0fd0d9433426d9c06dce1090a92b6f6b87245980.
CI is blocked by four existing react-effect-budget errors in apps/web/src/routes/__root.tsx, apps/web/src/components/files/InlineAudioPreview.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ui/middle-truncate.tsx, and apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/usePullRequestListView.ts. These files and the effect budget are identical to base e3592efe7f5dbd3a869e46e608d8f6815e1bb7f6. See Lint job. These failures are pre-existing on main: base e3592efe CI run and current main 5f1f6047 CI run both fail Lint and Check. This PR's build/typecheck, general tests, web tests, and all eight server shards pass; its aggregate Check fails only because Lint fails. No unrelated code or CI policy was changed. Once main is green, merge github/main into this branch without rebasing or force-pushing and rerun the scoped checks.
Macroscope requires human review because this changes authentication credential lifetime. Its correctness check passed.
Scope and approval
Focused recovery fix for the two stale desktop bearer caches identified in #18384 and the legacy bootstrap expiry that prevents renewal. No broader authentication redesign. Human review of the credential lifetime policy is pending.
Takeover
Replaces #18384, with thanks to @saphid for the original implementation.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The change renews expiring desktop sessions and removes the legacy bootstrap credential's 24-hour exchange limit. Human review is required for the added diagnostic suppression and the changed credential-lifetime default.

Desktop authentication now caches bearer tokens until they approach expiry, then obtains a new session. The server validates desktop bootstrap credentials directly. The web token-promise cache clears after success or failure so later requests can obtain a renewed bearer.

Summary
Direct desktop bootstrap credential handling apps/server/src/auth/PairingGrantStore.ts, apps/server/src/auth/PairingGrantStore.test.ts, apps/server/src/auth/EnvironmentAuth.test.ts
The server validates rotating credentials when a desktop secret is configured, or matches the configured bootstrap token otherwise. Requested scopes must overlap standard client scopes, and required scopes must be included. Tests cover scope rejection, acceptance after a long suspend, and renewed sessions after bearer expiry.
Desktop bearer expiry and renewal apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopLocalEnvironmentAuth.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopLocalEnvironmentAuth.test.ts
The desktop caches each bearer with its expiration time and reuses it only when more than 60 seconds remain. Tests cover concurrent reads, reuse before expiry, and renewal after expiry.
Web bearer promise refresh apps/web/src/environments/primary/desktopAuth.ts, apps/web/src/environments/primary/httpLayer.test.ts
The cached token promise clears after fulfillment or rejection. The HTTP-layer test checks that a later request uses a renewed bearer.
pingdotgg/t3code#22951 reports duplicate desktop-bootstrap exchanges that can revoke a cached bearer. This change covers shared concurrent reads and bearer renewal, but does not add eviction after a server revocation response.

Verified the legacy desktop bootstrap renewal branch on Linux at 2cfc5fb6cdc1bbc0b0abdb76d0bc9a2607490cad. No source changes were needed.
Reproduced first on github/main (4914cdd98f) in ../main after vp i. Started actual desktop-mode servers using the desktop bootstrap-fd envelope, isolated state, and a process-local realtime clock offset of +31 days. No auth services, providers, or responses were mocked. The host clock and monotonic timers were unchanged.
Started vp run dev in the background, then used its real Vite web client against the aged desktop-mode server with Playwright from this repository and /usr/bin/google-chrome. Paired through the UI with the configured legacy credential, added /tmp/auth-renewal-repo through Add project, selected Codex gpt-6.1-sol, and completed three real turns through the local proxy. The first ran pwd and git status --short; follow-up messages returned successfully. Reopening the thread in a fresh browser preserved its messages. No fixture or demo data was used.
All 29 existing focused cases passed through blacksmith-check: DesktopLocalEnvironmentAuth, EnvironmentAuth, PairingGrantStore, and primary HTTP layer. The head's reported CI has 30 successful checks, zero failing, zero pending.
Not verified
Live Electron IPC/main-process and renderer cache renewal, including rotating-secret renewal and the 60-second threshold, remain unverified in the actual desktop client. Linux Electron and its real child backend started, but browser/debugger requests repeatedly hung; this is not counted as proof of the cache changes. Those paths have focused test coverage above. This is partial live verification, not a claim that every changed desktop path was exercised.
Actual OS suspend/resume, Windows/WSL, macOS, native iOS/Android, remote relay/tunnel, and external cloud linking were not exercised. The 31-day check uses a process clock advance, not physical suspension. This authentication lifetime policy still needs the requested human review. No visual styling changed, so the server transcript is the before/after evidence.
vp run check:changed also passed through blacksmith-check after fetching enough Git history in its shallow worker: format, lint, both knip passes, GraphQL, four affected-package typechecks, and all 29 focused tests. Uploaded video playback reached the end without error and seeking was checked.
Merged current github/main (b42adff3d7) without rebasing. Resolved the two PairingGrantStore conflicts while preserving exact desktop credential matching, case-insensitive issued pairing codes, required-scope checks, and long-suspend renewal. The PR remains seven files, 158 additions and 238 deletions.
At 85be9731273d373336a191d5e550dd9766ba50fb, blacksmith-check passed all 31 focused auth cases and vp run check:changed: format, lint, both knip passes, GraphQL, five package typechecks, 32 scoped tests, and React Compiler coverage. Two independent gpt-6.1-sol reviews found no blocker or should findings.
Rechecked the real desktop-mode HTTP server with isolated state and a process-local +31-day clock advance: initial token exchange 200, protected request 200, expired bearer 401, legacy credential re-exchange 200, renewed protected request 200, wrong-case credential 401. This does not simulate physical OS suspension. Live Electron IPC/cache renewal remains unverified; no styling or UI controls changed. The existing human authentication-policy review remains required.
