fix(opencode): use Big Pickle for default text generation - #22442
Text generation failed for OpenCode users who left the default unchanged because they did not have access to openai/gpt-5.
Change
Use opencode/big-pickle as OpenCode's default text generation model in the shared provider defaults. This covers the server settings fallback and client model selection across web, desktop, and mobile. Explicit saved selections are unchanged.
Scope and approval
This is a focused fix for the reported inaccessible default in the existing OpenCode text generation capability. No new settings or workflows are introduced.
Verification
vp test run packages/shared/src/serverSettings.test.ts apps/web/src/modelSelection.test.ts: 91 tests passed, including a regression test that selects Big Pickle when only OpenCode is enabled.
Targeted lint passed with one existing warning in the test file.
Contracts typecheck passed with existing suggestions.
git diff --check passed.
No browser or live provider verification performed.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This changes OpenCode's default text-generation model and grants generation sessions unrestricted read access. The default change requires human review, and the unresolved finding identifies potential disclosure of workspace secrets to the model.

Walkthrough
The OpenCode text-generation default changes from openai/gpt-5 to opencode/big-pickle. A test checks fallback selection when OpenCode is the only enabled provider. OpenCode text-generation sessions now allow read access for all patterns while retaining the wildcard deny rule.

Merge Risk: High · up to 1c38d
This change can break review-guide generation for OpenCode-only configurations and expose local environment secrets to the configured model provider. Both issues should be fixed before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 90fbd
The default now selects a different upstream destination. Existing enablement and tool restrictions remain in place, but the destination’s data-handling and credential policies have not been verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed exposure is fallback text-generation prompts for which OpenCode is selected and the default is used. Existing selection gates and valid explicit selections constrain that scope. The evidence does not establish downstream hosting, retention, training, regional processing or upstream credential policy for the new destination.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Existing provider enablement and text-generation capability gates remain in force. The configured OpenCode server authentication is unchanged. Text-generation sessions retain restrictive tool permissions: the older path denies permissions, while the newer path rejects permission requests. These controls constrain execution authority but do not establish the upstream provider’s privacy policy.

Explanation
The title names the main change: OpenCode's default text-generation model moves to Big Pickle. The changeset does that in model.ts, the settings fallback test, and a read-permission fix in textGeneration.ts. The title does not mention the permission fix, but that is a secondary aspect. The title follows the conventional commit style used in the repository template.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections, and it includes the model and harness line. The Problem and Change sections are clear. The Scope and approval section says the fix is focused and adds no settings or workflows. It does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval comment, and it does not explain why a very small fix qualifies without one. The description also does not mention the later read-only tool permission change, which the objectives show was added in a follow-up commit. Verification lists focused test commands and results and states what was not checked. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes, but the scope section and the missing permission-change note should be addressed.

OpenCode Zen refuses free-model requests that carry no tools, answering
with a misleading "Free usage limit reached". Text generation denied every
tool, so Big Pickle never returned a title. Keep the read tool allowed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
What was wrong: text generation created the OpenCode session with every tool denied, so the request to Zen carried no tools. Zen refuses free-model requests with no tools, and answers with a misleading Free usage limit reached. OpenCode treats that as retryable and keeps retrying, so the thread sat on "Regenerating title" and never got one. That is what Maria's runs hit too; nobody was actually out of free usage.
Fix: keep the read-only read tool allowed for text generation sessions (packages/provider-opencode/src/server/textGeneration.ts). Everything else stays denied.
Proof: same machine, same message, Big Pickle, two minutes apart.
Before (this PR without the fix): still "Regenerating title" after 11 minutes, OpenCode log shows 3 × Free usage limit reached.
After: title in ~5s, $0. OpenCode's record: opencode/big-pickle, reply {"title": "Fix Safari crash on empty password", "needsRefinement": false}.
vp run check:changed passes. Not covered: commit and PR text generation (same code path), paid Zen/Go accounts. Known leftover: when a user really hits the free limit, the title still spins instead of failing fast, because OpenCode retries until the reset. That's a separate follow-up.

Do not use the general text-generation fallback for review guides.
When no review-guide or source-control-writer model is configured, resolveReviewGuideModelSelection returns settings.textGenerationModelSelection. The changed default can therefore select OpenCode for generateReviewGuide.
generateReviewGuide always sends an investigate request. OpenCode wraps its runner with withoutInvestigation("OpenCode", ...), which returns TextGenerationError whenever that field is present. The review-guide request therefore fails before OpenCode performs generation.
Update the review-guide selection boundary to choose only an investigation-capable provider. Do not reuse settings.textGenerationModelSelection when it resolves to OpenCode.

Keep the read workaround, but deny environment files.
permission: "read" enables OpenCode's file-reading tool. Its pattern: "*" also matches project-local .env files. The read tool returns file contents to the model, so a reachable text-generation session can send those contents to the configured provider.
Add explicit denies after the broad allow. Keep .env.example allowed if required.
