fix(client): inline code URL paths no longer render as file chips - #19012
Inline code holding a URL path, like `/images/ZOOM/provider/te115_2.jpg`, renders as a file chip labelled te115_2.jpg. The rest of the path only shows in the tooltip, and the chip points at a file that doesn't exist. inlineCodeFilePathCandidate accepted any span starting with / once the last segment had an extension, so /api/v1/users.json got the same treatment.
Absolute paths in inline code now need one of the roots in POSIX_FILE_ROOT_PREFIXES, or must sit inside the workspace. Markdown links already use that list to reject app routes like /chat/settings. The web resolver and thread search pass cwd through for the workspace case. Mobile has no cwd there, so it only checks the root list. The check is a few string comparisons with no I/O.
The cost: absolute paths outside both the root list and the workspace, like /app/src/main.ts inside a container or /nix/store/..., no longer get a chip. They stay readable as inline code, and markdown links already reject /app/ the same way.
I'm sending this without an issue under the small-obvious-fix exception: it changes one function, adds an optional parameter, and leaves relative paths alone. Relative paths like size/provider/file.jpg have the same problem, but no shape rule can tell them from src/main.ts. I opened an Ideas discussion for that one: #19040.

Tests: markdownLinks, threadFindText, web markdown-links, mobile markdownLinks and ChatMarkdown all pass, and shared and web typecheck clean.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — URL-like inline-code paths now stay plain code instead of becoming file chips. Mobile still lacks workspace context, leaving an open concern about losing file navigation for real workspace paths under unlisted roots.

Inline-code path candidate extraction now accepts an optional workspace root and applies checks to slash-prefixed paths. The web link resolver and thread text extraction pass the workspace root. Tests cover candidate classification and workspace path handling.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 5313b
The path-filtering change matches the stated behavior, with valid file paths retained as chips and URL-like paths remaining inline code.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to bed39
The change narrows which inline-code paths become file references without granting additional file access or privileges. No material security risk was found in the changed behavior.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated impact is narrower recognition in client presentation and thread-text extraction. The changed predicate does not add a candidate that the base rejected, and no additional credential, tenant, service, or datastore authority is demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Markdown-derived path text remains input to recognition and target-resolution utilities. The new workspace predicate controls automatic recognition, not authorization to read a target. Existing parser handling for schemes and file targets remains downstream of candidate selection.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The changed recognition path performs synchronous string checks and returns a candidate or null. It introduces no shared mutable state, reservation, persistent write, cleanup obligation, or recovery transition.

Keep slash-prefixed Windows drive paths eligible.
When cwd is absent, /D:/Programme/t3code/file.ts reaches this POSIX filter. It matches no listed root, and workspaceRelativeFilePath returns null. The path therefore stops rendering as a file chip, although the existing file-link tests recognize this Windows path form. Exclude slash-prefixed Windows drive paths from the POSIX filter before applying the root check.

For /D:/Programme/t3code/file.ts, the helper removes the leading slash for the check. The Windows-path check then prevents rejection, even without cwd. The returned candidate stays unchanged.

Preserved slash-prefixed Windows drive paths in c6a8d5e. The existing candidate table now covers /D:/Programme/t3code/file.ts; it failed before the fix and passes afterward.

Inline code like `/images/logo.jpg` became a file chip labelled `logo.jpg`
because any span starting with `/` counted as a file once it had an
extension. Absolute paths now need a known filesystem root or must sit
inside the workspace, matching how markdown links already reject routes.
Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This is a narrowly scoped fix that prevents URL-like absolute paths from becoming file chips and adds workspace-aware recognition. An unresolved regression remains for slash-prefixed Windows drive paths when no workspace is available, so the shared path behavior merits human review.
Notes:
* Diff unchanged. Approvability was decided on eligibility alone.

Would a chip-display-upgrade work in this case: display the fact that the file-name is actually truncated but does start with '/xxxx' (variable length of some sort) and then some '...' and then the filename (/image.jpg)?
Or should this whole thing become an 'Idea' first to pick up General Consensus about this odd data-hiding behavior? (I already place an Idea (#19040) about the relative paths that are also hidden by the chip feature.)

Decode paths before checking workspace containment.
For workspace /code/my repo, /code/my%20repo/src/index.ts is rejected because the check compares the encoded path with the decoded cwd. The downstream parser decodes that path, so it previously produced a file chip. Slash-prefixed drive paths such as /D%3A/project/file.ts have the same problem. Apply the parser’s decoding before the root checks. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Pass the workspace root through the mobile thread markdown path.
ThreadFeed already has workspaceRoot, but SelectableMarkdownTextProps does not expose it. Add an optional cwd prop, pass it from the thread markdown call sites, and use it in resolveMarkdownInlineCodePresentation.
Before this PR, /code/app/src/x.ts passed the shared candidate check and mobile converted it to a file presentation. The new check rejects it because mobile supplies no cwd, so it remains plain code.

verified on linux in google chrome, driven with the repository's playwright dependency, using real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the web composer and running dev server. projects and conversation data were created through the app, without mocks, fixtures, or replay providers. only one dev server ran at a time.
on github/main (7195b699547b), the assistant's /images/ZOOM/provider/te115_2.jpg and /api/v1/users.json incorrectly became filename chips. on the original pr head (9c8be8fb838f), those stayed inline code, but /D%3A/Programme/other/file.ts lost its chip. fixed that regression in 5313bee123f26bbcf96776d3b1400c5b6e41e27c by decoding before the windows and posix root checks, preserving the authored candidate for downstream resolution.
after restarting the patched server, a fresh codex response preserved both complete url paths as inline code. relative, workspace, temporary, windows, encoded windows, and explicit markdown file links retained their chips. clicking the relative chip opened the actual source file from the server. find-in-thread matched the full image url in all three messages and advanced to the next match. the screenshots show matching response text on main and the patched pr; the recording shows opening the file and searching the url.
blacksmith-check reproduced two failing encoded-path cases before the fix. afterward, all 71 focused shared/web/mobile utility tests passed. vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith: formatting, lint, both knip passes, typechecks for 33 affected packages, 64 selected tests, and react compiler coverage. the worker needed the pr ancestry fetched before its merge-base comparison could run.
Not verified
native ios/android, the electron shell, actual windows/macOS filesystem navigation, other providers, and remote/relay/tunnel connections were not exercised on this linux vm. windows path presentation was checked in chrome, not on a windows host. mobile still has the documented limitation that absolute workspace paths outside the known root list receive no workspace context and can remain plain code. mobile utility tests passed, but this is not native-client verification. absolute paths outside both the allowlist and workspace intentionally remain code.
uploaded images were reopened and inspected; the trimmed recording was inspected and its uploaded player completed playback and seeking. github's automatic checks/reviews for the new head were still pending when this verification was recorded. no merge, rebase, force-push, closure, or label change was performed.
