Problem

Linux users whose editor is outside the built-in list cannot select it in the Open menu. With EDITOR=nvim, opening a worktree or a file:line:column link should launch Neovim in the user's default terminal.

Related proposals: #7055, #7109, and #1425.

Change

Add a Default editor choice for Linux desktop environments. The host reads VISUAL, falling back to EDITOR, and probes the executable. open-editor translates file positions. Terminal editors launch through xdg-terminal-exec; graphical editors launch directly. Both use the existing detached process launcher without a shell.

The client sends the existing editor ID and target path. It never sends a command. The existing favorite-editor preference remembers this choice. Direct folder opens receive the folder path without fabricated line numbers, and existing filenames ending in numeric colon suffixes open literally.

Scope and approval

This is a small configuration proposal for the existing host editor-launch capability. It avoids the application-registry scanning, new RPCs, and custom-command persistence proposed in closed PR #7534. There is no explicit maintainer approval for this implementation; this draft makes the smaller approach and its evidence reviewable.

Linux only. Default editor is offered only when env-editor recognizes its launch mode; unclassified executables such as hx are unavailable. Terminal editors require xdg-terminal-exec and a graphical host session. VISUAL/EDITOR must name an executable or executable path, without extra arguments or shell expansion. SSH deep-link mode keeps the existing supported editor list. Mobile has no editor picker to extend. Existing built-in integrations keep their argument handling.

Verification

Refreshed against upstream main (b67ac65b) with a merge commit, preserving upstream's Effect 4.0.5 update and the feature's editor dependencies. The only conflict was in the server lockfile importer.

  • Full vp run build:desktop pipeline passed: web, server, and Electron bundles. Native Linux helper compiled in a temporary Nix build environment with pkg-config and libsecret headers.
  • Focused launcher, picker, and label tests: 89 passed, 3 skipped.
  • Targeted TypeScript checking, lint, formatting, preload bundle verification, and base-to-head whitespace validation passed.
  • Frozen-lockfile installation passed for the affected desktop/server/web workspaces and the lint plugin. No live app installation or runtime state was changed.

UI verification

Verified the actual dev web app and server in an isolated Niri desktop with synthetic project, thread, and file data. Selecting Default editor opened the project in Neovim through the existing shell RPC and xdg-terminal-exec. The file link's Open in default editor context action then opened demo.ts at line 12, column 4. Neovim reported that exact path and position. The temporary editor wrapper uses --clean, displays a readable status line, and records VimEnter.

Watch the 24-second recording. Observed cursor data.

Before, parent commit 5753207d:

Before: the picker offers Files

After, the feature branch:

After: Default editor is available

Result of opening the file link:

Neovim at line 12, column 4

Agent: GPT-6.1-Sol, medium reasoning effort, through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

The launch test covers the backend path, but the new picker option still needs UI verification. Please add before/after screenshots and a short recording of selecting Default editor and opening a file at its requested position. Also explain why the new @pierre/theming and @pierre/trees peer snapshots in pnpm-lock.yaml are needed for this change, or remove them to keep the scope focused.

Walkthrough

Adds a Linux default-editor option. The server resolves VISUAL or EDITOR and launches the configured editor when supported. The Open menu displays the option when available, except in remote-links mode.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve and launch the configured editor
packages/contracts/src/editor.ts, apps/server/package.json, apps/server/src/process/externalLauncher.ts, apps/server/src/process/externalLauncher.test.ts
Adds default-editor to the editor contract. The server checks editor availability and launch requirements, resolves file positions, and uses xdg-terminal-exec for terminal editors. Tests cover selection, literal file paths, positions, unsupported configurations, and an opt-in live launch. Adds the env-editor and open-editor dependencies.
Expose the option in the Open menu
apps/web/src/editorLabels.ts, apps/web/src/editorLabels.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/OpenInPicker.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/OpenInPicker.test.ts, apps/web/src/fileContextMenu.ts, docs/user/project-settings.md
The picker displays Default editor when available. The file context menu excludes it in remote-links mode. Labels and documentation describe the option and its constraints.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review b357f

A misconfigured graphical-session variable can expose Default editor even when it cannot launch successfully. The edge case is bounded, but the session check should be aligned before merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to b357f

The change remains within the existing host-side editor-launch capability. Callers select an editor ID and path, not a command, and Linux launches use separated arguments without a shell. No new authorization bypass was established, but third-party editor translation and desktop-terminal behavior remain partially verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant exposure is the selected environment host and its existing process identity. A caller authorized to operate that environment can request a configured editor to open a chosen target. The launch does not add another tenant identity or let the caller submit an arbitrary executable, but the resulting process inherits host privileges and environment access.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Remote-links menu suppression is not server-side enforcement: an otherwise authorized caller can invoke default-editor directly. This does not establish a new authorization bypass because the same RPC already allowed host-side built-in editor launches. The new branch changes host-controlled executable selection while retaining the caller’s existing target-path authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The executable comes from host VISUAL or EDITOR, not RPC data. Local controls require Linux, display-environment presence, executable availability, and recognized-editor membership. Target paths become absolute, positional values are numeric, and terminal launches preserve argument boundaries with an xdg-terminal-exec separator. Unsupported resolution fails before spawning.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The operation retains existing detached, fire-and-forget semantics: spawn failures are mapped to launcher errors, successful handles are unreferenced, and no editor-completion transaction is tracked. Repetition can launch additional processes, and interruption or rollback cannot be assumed to undo a launch already handed to the desktop. These behaviors predate the default-editor branch rather than representing newly stranded authorization state.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude default-editor from the file context menu in remote-links mode.

The file browser includes every server-reported editor except file-manager. It then sends the selected editor to shell.openInEditor. If the server advertises default-editor, this action launches the environment host's editor and violates the SSH deep-link restriction.

Filter default-editor from this menu only in remote-links mode. Keep all server-reported editors in local mode.
