Problem

The access stream could miss session or pairing-link changes while loading its initial snapshot or waiting for the client acknowledgement. Connections could remain stale until another event or reconnect.

Change

Acquire both scoped auth-store subscriptions before loading the snapshot, then consume those buffered streams after the initial acknowledgement. Keep existing authorization, event mapping, telemetry and wire contracts.

Thanks @saphid for the original #18405 contribution. Contributor history is preserved with current main merged. The takeover keeps the small subscription-order change and strengthens the existing regression to cover the snapshot-read window as well as acknowledgement.

Scope and approval

Focused maintainer takeover of subscription ordering. No new authorization, grant or credential behavior. Both stores use the repository's existing scoped PubSub pattern. Authentication-sensitive landing still requires maintainer review; this preparation does not waive that gate or request a merge.

Verification

At current head 95bbd0c91b7d9c2cbebdbeac9c07760f33be129a, the existing RPC regression also records chunk boundaries and asserts the initial chunk contains only the snapshot before the acknowledgement. Its snapshot-read gate, buffered-event assertions and both subscription finalizers remain. This is a test-only follow-up to CodeRabbit's chunk-boundary note; production behavior is unchanged.

vp run check:changed c0a144efbff721ee60e81081bc1fd06e587ee90f passed: 2 tests across two files, three affected package typechecks, formatting, lint, knip and server GraphQL checks. All eight required checks passed at this head, and Macroscope approved this exact revision. The cancelled native fingerprint run is superseded by a successful run at the same head. CodeRabbit is paused after reviewing c0a144e; its retained chunk-boundary recommendation is implemented in this test-only follow-up, but CodeRabbit has not reviewed 95bbd0c. No new actionable finding was posted. Maintainer review before landing remains required; no review-request delivery is claimed.

Follow-up implementation and verification: GPT-6.1 Sol, Codex harness through T3 Code.

Earlier main-integration evidence

Current head: c0a144e, with main 79f1fad merged normally. The SessionStore conflict retains this PR's scoped subscription API and main's DPoP renewal invalidation contract.

vp run check:changed 79f1fadfc6020b820d541ca4691d2feebb15dd1b passed: 40 tests across five files, three package typechecks, formatting, lint, knip and server GraphQL checks. Hosted CI and maintainer review remain required.

Earlier evidence

At 2a93049, based on fb99076:

  • 85 focused tests pass across the real RPC-handler regression and four auth test files. The single regression gates the real session snapshot read, changes state during that gate, and verifies delivery across the acknowledgement wait. It also checks both subscription finalizers after cancellation.
  • Moving subscription acquisition after the snapshot read fails the regression. Reverting the original fix also fails; no sleeps or polling are used for success.
  • Server typecheck and scoped formatting/lint pass, with only pre-existing warnings on untouched lines.
  • Fresh full Opus and Sol reviews found no correctness defects.

Proof uses the real handler and auth stores with in-memory SQLite. No real client, live database or end-to-end WebSocket session was used. Pairing-link delivery during setup, snapshot-failure cleanup and simultaneous subscribers were reviewed in source rather than separately exercised.

Prepared through T3 Code: Claude Opus 5.5 tests/full review, Claude Fable 5.1 implementation, GPT-6.1 Sol independent review; standard service tiers.

Acquire both credential change subscriptions before reading the snapshot so concurrent connection updates survive the snapshot ACK wait. Release the subscriptions with the RPC request scope.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed path affects delivery and buffering of pairing-link and session metadata from the server's auth stores to an authorized subscriber. It does not add a credential issuance or revocation operation; the observable change is when existing store events become subscribed and retained.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The production endpoint authenticates the WebSocket upgrade before constructing handlers with that session. RPC authorization requires AuthAccessReadScope for subscribeAuthAccess and rejects requests missing their required scope before invoking the handler. Exporting the layer for tests does not replace this production enforcement chain.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Scope-bound acquisition provides an explicit ownership mechanism for the earlier subscriptions, and the interruption regression supports request-level release. Cleanup when snapshot loading fails remains a coverage gap, not an observed resource leak.

Test the production handler pipeline instead of a copy of it.

Both test groups rebuild the subscribeAuthAccess pipeline inline. The copy calls streamAccess, wraps the snapshot with rpcInitialItems([snapshot]), concatenates the changes stream, and maps errors to AuthAccessStreamError. The real handler at apps/server/src/ws.ts Lines 3034-3039 is never called.

Because of this, the tests can still pass after a regression in ws.ts. Examples:

  • The handler stops using rpcInitialItems.
  • The handler puts changes before the snapshot.
  • The handler maps errors differently.

The PR description says the handler is exported as subscribeAuthAccess so it can be tested at the RPC boundary. The final code keeps it inline instead. Move the pipeline into one exported function, for example subscribeAuthAccess(auth, currentSessionId) in ws.ts. Call that function from the handler and from both tests.

On CodeRabbit's nitpick about testing the production handler: the exported subscribeAuthAccess was deliberately removed in 40a99a5 to follow the repo's Effect service conventions (Macroscope flagged an exported effectful free function next to the transport). The race and cleanup logic now lives in EnvironmentAuth.streamAccess, and the tests drive that real service. The handler is a one-line delegation. Keeping it that way rather than re-exporting it.

Restore the inline workflow and keep one ACK-window regression with scoped cleanup. Use two session changes to test ordering within one source.

Add a deterministic snapshot-read race test.

The current test takes the snapshot before calling sessions.markConnected(...). It therefore tests the ACK window, not a change during loadAuthAccessSnapshot(). Gate EnvironmentAuth.listClientSessions with a Deferred, change the session while that read is blocked, release the read, then ACK and assert the buffered event. Keep the current test for ACK-window coverage.

Taking over this one. I’ll reduce the tests to the useful coverage, update the implementation against current main, and verify it before publishing the changes.

The Connections access stream could drop a session or pairing-link change made while its initial snapshot was being read. Both store subscriptions are now plain scoped accessors acquired before the snapshot, and the regression test gates the snapshot read so the change lands inside that window and crosses the ACK wait.

3026-3033: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Move the auth-access subscription ordering into an EnvironmentAuth service method.

The ordering fix is correct. Stream.unwrap owns the scope, so both subscribeChanges subscriptions are released when the stream ends or snapshot loading fails. The same pattern exists in subscribeOrchestrationV2Shell.

The handler now holds a domain invariant: subscribe before you read the snapshot. It also acquires two subscriptions, loads the snapshot, assigns revisions, and merges the streams. The repository rules allow a ws.ts handler only to decode input, call one service method, and map errors. With the invariant in the handler, an MCP tool or another transport that exposes auth-access state must copy the ordering again and can reintroduce the race. The PR history shows that this code was moved into EnvironmentAuth.streamAccess and then moved back. If the move back was deliberate, add a short comment that says why. Otherwise, add a service method such as EnvironmentAuth.streamAccess(currentSessionId) and reduce this handler to a single call.

As per coding guidelines: "A ws.ts RPC handler, HTTP route, or MCP tool decodes input, calls one service method, and maps errors."

Assert the snapshot chunk boundary before acknowledging it.

onFromServer flattens each Chunk into responses. The revision-2 event can therefore share the snapshot's chunk and still satisfy the later Queue.take after the acknowledgement. The test does not prove post-ACK buffering.
