feat(web, mobile): fill in plugin settings from Settings - #16056
Plugins can declare settings, but users need a form to supply values and secrets after approving a plugin. This adds editable settings on web/desktop and a read-only settings view on mobile.
Change
Shared client state subscribes to each installation’s settings, validates drafts against its declared fields, and saves through the existing guarded settings RPC. Web and desktop provide text/number/select/boolean editors, secret replacement, reset to default and secret deletion. Multiline text and secrets retain line breaks; secret reads reveal only whether a value is saved. Mobile displays effective values and saved-secret status without editing.
The complete contribution also includes the inherited trusted plugin runtime, installations, settings/secrets, actions/tools, views, npm installation/updates, event delivery, contracts and client panel integration. Recent repairs enforce full-access/default mode for trusted agent plugin calls, open view assets/manifests nonblocking before checking file type, and bound manifest reads to 64 KiB plus one byte. The current commit only documents refused view-file shapes and explains the hashing diagnostic exception.
Session permissions are enforced against the destination environment. Standard pairings retain upstream main’s access:write; mobile’s read-only settings view is a product limitation, not proof that all standard pairings lack that scope. Local and remote clients use the same environment RPCs. Trusted plugin code runs with the server OS user’s access.
Scope and approval
The target is main. At this head the full comparison spans 294 files, +40,410 / −892; it is not limited to the original settings-form increment. The original preceding layer is #16055, but the branches are independently integrated with main.
Maintainer approval of direction and scope remains outstanding. This follows the proposal route in #6714 / #6837; no exemption or approval is claimed. Macroscope also requires human review of diagnostic suppressions and the raw-RPC lint exception. The PR remains excluded from the ready-for-review batch pending those decisions and current client verification.
Verification
Current head: d286a8cc45ee9ef02e817dc08623dbaa77bb103e, with main 79f1fad integrated.
vp run check:changed f342ecb11fc04d98d2ac4e75aaf6ceee27e47793 passed for this documentation/comment-only follow-up: 15 tests in two selected files, three affected package typechecks, formatting, lint, knip and GraphQL checks. It does not repeat the full integration suite.
The preceding mode/read repair at f342ecb passed its staged reader regressions and combined change check: 39 affected package typechecks, selected tests in 12 files, six compiler files and static checks. The real FIFO regression failed before the fix. These results apply to that recorded revision.
All eight required hosted checks passed at the current head. The separate Agent context budget job fails on inherited MCP tool-list growth, 46,109 → 47,478 bytes (+1,369). Maintainer acceptance is outstanding. The current-head audit has no failing Test Web or aggregate Check job; those failures belonged to older verification notes.
Macroscope retains the FIFO finding from 9eb9f49. Current assets and manifests use pluginViewFile.open, which opens with O_NONBLOCK/O_NOFOLLOW before checking the handle type; the recorded regression covers this repair. Reviewer reassessment remains pending. The manifest-growth finding is explicitly marked no longer relevant at f342ecb.
CodeRabbit is paused after reviewing f342ecb and has not reviewed d286a8c. Its requested file-format documentation and hashing-exception explanation are implemented in this head. Its summary is not current-head approval.
No integrated web/desktop, native Chromium, iOS/Android or screen-reader pass was performed for this update. Current comparable client evidence remains outstanding. No repo-wide suite was run.
Historical captures predate the current multiline editors and integration and are retained only as the original UI record: web before / after; desktop before / after.
Original implementation: Claude Opus 5.5 through Claude Code/T3 Code; historical captures: GPT-6 Astra. Current repairs and verification: GPT-6.1 Sol, Codex harness through T3 Code.
Macroscope has since reviewed this pull request. An earlier review was skipped by a cost limit; a review has now completed, so that notice no longer applies.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This adds plugin settings and a broader plugin platform across server and clients. It also adds a file-level diagnostic suppression and broadens a raw-RPC lint exception, both requiring explicit human review.
Needs human approval because:

Refuse plain-HTTP registries, or limit them to loopback.
normalizeRegistry accepts http: registry URLs. Here is the attack path:
resolve reads the version metadata, including the sha512 integrity, from ${registry}/....
With an http: registry, that metadata travels without authentication.
A network attacker between the server and the registry can serve their own metadata and a matching tarball. The integrity check then passes, because both values come from the attacker.
The user then consents to a digest that they cannot compare against anything. The attacker's code runs as the OS user when the plugin is next invoked.
An HTTP tarball URL inside metadata fetched over HTTPS is safe, because the HTTPS metadata pins the integrity. Only the registry address needs this rule.
The precondition is an administrator who types an http:// registry. The default registry is HTTPS. The cost of the rule is small.

Skip the previous-status query for run.updated events that do not settle the run.
withRunFinalizedEvents runs inside every write transaction while the publish lane is held. For every run.updated, it calls previousStatus, which runs a SELECT on orchestration_v2_projection_runs. It does this before it checks RunFinalized.runFinalizedOutcome(run.status). Most run updates are not final, so that query does work the code never uses. Compute outcome first. Record the status in statuses, and continue when outcome === null. The in-batch statuses map stays correct, because later updates in the same batch read the earlier update's status from it.

The Agent Context Budget check fails because of the new mcpToolListJsonBytes value.
The new plugin MCP tool declarations make the MCP tool list 1,369 bytes larger (46007 → 47376). The Agent context budget job compares this file with main. ALLOW_INCREASE is false, so the job exits with code 1. This blocks the required CI check.
Changing this baseline number does not fix the problem. The check compares against main, so the measured growth is what fails. Use one of these fixes:
Make the plugin tool descriptions and input schemas in apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/pluginTools/tools.ts shorter until the byte count returns under the budget. Then rerun the related evals.
Or get the agent-context-increase label from a maintainer, together with eval results that justify the larger budget.

Count repeated references from the root schema.
This limit counts expansion within each definition but does not count references repeated by the root schema. A root property can use anyOf to reference a near-limit definition many times. An input that fails every branch then requires far more than 4,096 schema visits despite passing preparation. Include root-originating references in the expansion budget. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Document the view file restrictions that cause a view to be refused.
The Views section gives a 1 MiB limit. It does not say that the server refuses some files below that limit. PluginViews.ts refuses a script that contains CR, NUL, <!--, <script, or </script. It refuses a style that contains CR, NUL, or </style. It also refuses a file that starts with a byte order mark, and a view whose JSON-encoded size exceeds 2 MiB.
Bundled or minified output often contains these strings, and CRLF files contain CR. A plugin author cannot predict these refusals from the current text. Add a short sentence that lists them, in the Views section.
Proposed addition
With the `views` capability, declare up to 8 views. Each has an `id`, a `title`, the placement
`side-panel`, one `script` and an optional `style`, together at most 1 MiB. An enabled plugin's views
open as tabs in the right panel of the web and desktop apps, from its empty launcher and its **+**
menu. Views are not available in the mobile apps yet.
++A view file must be UTF-8 without a byte order mark and with LF line endings. A script cannot contain+`<!--`, `<script`, or `</script`. A style cannot contain `</style`. T3 Code shows the reason when it+refuses a file.
As per coding guidelines, docs/user/** should explain "anything unintuitive".

Update the Views section to briefly document the file restrictions enforced by
PluginViews.ts: files must be UTF-8 without a byte order mark or CR characters;
scripts must exclude NUL and the listed comment and script-tag strings, and
styles must exclude NUL and the closing style tag. Also mention the 2 MiB
JSON-encoded view-size limit and that T3 Code shows the refusal reason.
Add a reason to the @effect-diagnostics nodeBuiltinImport:off directive.
Line 1 disables a diagnostic and gives no reason. The comments on Lines 2-3 describe the digest design. They do not explain why node:crypto is needed.
Add a -- reason suffix, as pluginViewFile.ts does on its Line 1.
Proposed fix
-// @effect-diagnostics nodeBuiltinImport:off+// @effect-diagnostics nodeBuiltinImport:off -- Hashes view bytes synchronously with node:crypto; the digest must match the catalogue's.
As per path instructions, docs/internals/effect-services.md requires: "Does every directive you added that disables a lint, type-checker, or LSP diagnostic say why".

Add an explanatory reason to the nodeBuiltinImport diagnostic suppression in
PluginViews, stating that node:crypto is used for synchronous view-byte hashing
so its digest matches the catalogue’s.

Problem
Standard pairings retain upstream main’s
access:write; mobile’s read-only settings view is a product limitation, not proof that all standard pairings lack that scope. Local and remote clients use the same environment RPCs. Trusted plugin code runs with the server OS user’s access.Scope and approval
The target is
main. At this head the full comparison spans 294 files, +40,410 / −892; it is not limited to the original settings-form increment. The original preceding layer is #16055, but the branches are independently integrated with main.Maintainer approval of direction and scope remains outstanding. This follows the proposal route in #6714 / #6837; no exemption or approval is claimed. Macroscope also requires human review of diagnostic suppressions and the raw-RPC lint exception. The PR remains excluded from the ready-for-review batch pending those decisions and current client verification.
