introduces global schema to mitigate conflicts between multiple ingest nodes

Description

This PR has:

  • been tested to ensure log ingestion and log query works.
  • added comments explaining the "why" and the intent of the code wherever would not be obvious for an unfamiliar reader.
  • added documentation for new or modified features or behaviors.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a canonical schema registry for dynamically changing stream schemas, preserving established field names and types while resolving conflicts.
    • Streams can restore and use their persisted canonical schema during ingestion and reads. Supported object storage backends can retrieve schema versions and apply conditional updates.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Incompatible schema merges now return errors instead of causing reader panics.
    • Batch adaptation handles missing fields and compatible type changes while preserving row counts.

Walkthrough

This change adds a canonical schema registry backed by conditional global-schema storage. Ingest streams resolve and cache canonical schemas, restore them during setup, and apply field resolution during batch conversion. Schema retrieval prefers the global schema when one exists.

Changes

Canonical Schema Registry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Global-schema storage
src/storage/*, src/metastore/*
Storage and metastore interfaces add global-schema retrieval, lock operations, and conditional updates. Object-store backends add versioned reads and conditional writes. Global schemas are excluded from legacy-schema discovery.
Canonical field resolution
src/schema_registry.rs, src/lib.rs
The registry maps local field-name and datatype pairs to canonical fields. It supports legacy-schema bootstrap, pinned fields, and retries after conditional-write conflicts.
Stream schema resolution and restoration
src/parseable/streams.rs, src/parseable/staging/mod.rs, src/migration/mod.rs, src/parseable/mod.rs
Eligible ingest streams resolve and cache global schemas. Setup can restore a stored schema, and schema retrieval returns the global schema when present.
Schema-aware batch conversion
src/utils/arrow/batch_adapter.rs, src/parseable/staging/reader.rs, src/parseable/streams.rs
Batch conversion adapts fields to local and canonical schemas, applies resolved names, and returns adaptation and schema-union errors.

LocalFS ingestion can fail, conflicting groups can stall conversion, and concurrent ingest nodes can lose canonical schema updates. These paths should be fixed before merging.

Keep the raw local schema in LogStreamMetadata.schema.

restore_global_schema returns the canonical schema, and setup_logstream_metadata stores it as the metadata schema. Event::process passes its RecordBatch directly to Stream::push, which stores it in memory without schema adaptation. recordbatches_cloned then adapts that batch to the canonical metadata schema before applying the global resolution.

For a raw batch with a: Int64 and canonical metadata with a: Utf8, adapt_batch selects the a array by name and calls RecordBatch::try_new(...).unwrap(). This can panic before resolution.rename_batch can rename the field.

Keep the raw local schema in LogStreamMetadata.schema. Call restore_global_schema to populate Stream::global_schema, then use the raw schema for metadata.

                 time_partition.as_ref(),
                 custom_partition.as_ref(),
             )
-            .await?
+            .await?;
+        stream_ref.updated_schema(arrow_schema.clone())
     } else {
         stream_ref.updated_schema(arrow_schema.clone())
     };

The JSON path renames detected conflicts before fields_mismatch, so this finding is about the raw in-memory batch path, not direct JSON rejection.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Guard global-schema conversion for LocalFS.

ObjectStorage does not define supports_conditional_writes(), so uncommenting the current call will not compile. Without an equivalent guard, non-static LocalFS ingest reaches global-schema resolution. LocalFS inherits the default put_object_if implementation, which returns an unsupported-backend error and causes conversion to requeue staging files and fail.

Use the existing provider name to exclude LocalFS. Current cloud backends implement put_object_if.

Update can_use_global_schema to exclude LocalFS using the existing storage
provider name, while preserving the ingest-mode and non-static-schema checks. Do
not rely on supports_conditional_writes(), which ObjectStorage does not define.
