  • added query param ?format=compact to get a compact schema for /schema endpoint (defaults to JSON)
  • if severity text/number is missing then the value is derived using the other field if present

Fixes #XXXX.

Description

This PR has:

  • been tested to ensure log ingestion and log query works.
  • added comments explaining the "why" and the intent of the code wherever would not be obvious for an unfamiliar reader.
  • added documentation for new or modified features or behaviors.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a compact, plain-text TSV option for viewing log stream schemas alongside the existing JSON format. The TSV includes field names and types, with special characters escaped for readability.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved log severity display by aligning severity labels and numbers when one is missing or unspecified. Recognized labels now map to their corresponding severity range, and valid numbers can provide a label when text is blank or unspecified.

Walkthrough

The logstream schema endpoint now supports compact TSV responses and retains JSON responses. OpenTelemetry log flattening now normalizes severity number and text fields before emitting them.

Changes

Logstream Schema Formats

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compact schema format and rendering
src/handlers/http/logstream.rs
The schema query accepts json or compact, with JSON as the default. Compact output includes a TSV header and field rows, removes nested field metadata, and escapes backslashes, tabs, carriage returns, and newlines.
Route integration and format tests
src/handlers/http/logstream.rs
The handler selects the response format and content type. Tests cover JSON compatibility, compact output, invalid formats, empty and large schemas, and complex types.

OpenTelemetry Severity Normalization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Severity field normalization
src/otel/logs.rs
Severity text recognizes case-insensitive OpenTelemetry names, the SEVERITY_NUMBER_ prefix, and the WARNING alias. Recognized text can provide a number; valid numbers can provide missing or unspecified text.
Flattening integration and tests
src/otel/logs.rs
Log flattening emits normalized severity fields and selects the primary category using the normalized number. Tests cover derived, absent, and preserved fields.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 0375b

The compact schema’s documented nullability behavior matches its output. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the supplied evidence.

Description check Warning The description identifies the two main changes, but the required Description section is empty, the issue placeholder remains, and all checklist items are unchecked. Complete the Description section with the goal, chosen solution and rationale, and key changes. Replace or remove "Fixes #XXXX". Mark each checklist item accurately and add documentation or explain why it is not required.
Docstring Coverage Warning Docstring coverage is 73.91% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 23 functions across 2 files. Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
Title check Inconclusive The title "Misc updates" is too vague and does not identify either the compact schema format or severity normalization changes. Replace it with a concise, specific title such as "Add compact schema format and normalize log severity fields".

serialization flow to after `insert_attributes`, so normalized `severity_number`
