NodeJS install problem - Error 1603

I am having an issue installing nodeJS on my Win11 desktop, repeatedly being told that the install failed with the error code 1603 or that it ended prematurely with no further explanation (winget install OpenJS.NodeJS and the .msi file respectively). I have looked for other resources about what might be causing this issue and have been unable to solve the issue with the advice provided by the other threads or other sources of information. From what I have gathered there are 4 possible causes of error 1603:

1. The app is already installed (as far as I can tell, this is not the case and never has been)
2. The folder it is being installed in is encrypted (I don't know what folder it is trying to install to, so I can not say)
3. SYSTEM does not have full access to the folder it is being installed to (again, don't know what folder)

The msi runs for less than a second before the below pop-up appears. I would greatly appreciate any and all help with this issue.

This is a super simplistic answer, but I ran into an installation problem on an old PC a few weeks ago. For some reason when I downloaded it through Chrome, it automatically added /GoogleDrive/ to the installation path on the PC (that directory didn't exist). Tried to do it through Internet Explorer and it worked. Probably not the solution to your problem, but it's worth a shot.

I have been able to resolve this issue. The steps I took were:

1. Download the appropriate binary (in my case that was .zip x64)
2. Extract the files and move them to where you would like them stored (if you haven't already)
3. Add the folder holding node.exe to the "path" in "Evironment Variables" (specific terms may only apply to windows)

Still don't know why the installers had so may problems. Assuming that the issue is resolved I will be closing this thread. Hopefully it can be of some use to others who have the same issue.

Solution 1: The Easy & Safe Fix (Microsoft's Official Tool)
This is the recommended method. Microsoft provides a dedicated troubleshooter to fix corrupted installation registry keys that block programs from being installed or uninstalled.

Download the Tool: Get the "Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter" directly from the official Microsoft support page.

Run the Troubleshooter: Open the downloaded file.

Follow the Steps:

Click Next.
Select "Uninstalling".
In the list of programs, find Node.js and select it.
Click Next and let the tool automatically find and fix the issue.
Once it's done, the broken registry entries for the old Node.js installation will be gone, and you should be able to install the new version without any problems.

Solution 2: The Manual Fix (If the Troubleshooter Fails)
If for some reason the troubleshooter doesn't work, you can solve the problem by giving the Windows Installer exactly what it's asking for.

Identify the Exact File: Look closely at the error message. It will tell you the exact file name it needs, for example, node-v22.14.0-x64.msi.

Download the Same MSI Version: Go to the official Node.js distribution archive, which holds all previous versions.

Navigate to the folder corresponding to your version (e.g., v22.14.0/) and download the exact .msi file.
Point the Installer to the File:

Start the uninstall/install process again to trigger the error window.
When the prompt appears, instead of clicking Cancel, click the "Browse..." button.
Navigate to your Downloads folder (or wherever you saved the .msi file) and select it.
Click OK.
The installer will now find the files it needs and will be able to complete the uninstallation or repair process successfully.
