[Feature Request] Support custom external links with custom labels on project pages #7807

Description

@czaha-official

Please confirm the following.

What parts of Modrinth is your feature request related too?

Modrinth.com website

Is your suggested feature related to a problem? Please describe.

  • I'm always frustrated when I want to share my own website or external resources on my project page, but there is no place or option to add custom links. Currently, creators cannot properly feature their own websites or blogs in the project's link section.

Describe the solution you'd like

  • I would like a feature that allows creators to add custom external links with custom labels (e.g., "Official Website", "Blog") so we have a proper place to link our sites on project pages.

Describe alternatives you've considered

  • Writing links inside the Markdown description, but they get easily overlooked by users because they aren't placed in the sidebar where people usually look for links.

Agreed, u can actually link some stu- oh wait only thr source code. I feel that part of what's needed is already in place because u can link the source . there might be a reason why not addwd tho.

@czaha-official or @Ceebug, could you share a bit more about what you hope to see from this? For example, is the following enough:

    • In-between the "Links" and "Donation links" sections, we add a new section "Custom links".
    • Works similar to donation links in that you can add / remove them from the list, and they would also be stored similarly to donation links (I think... I'm a total Rust noob and just did some light reading of the code).
    • However "Custom links" are different from the other links in that you can also any string you want (probably < 50 characters or something like that).
    • You can add them during project creation or edit them later.
    • On a project's page, similar to how links and donation links are delimited by a horizontal divider, if there are custom links present, they would render between the two, with a divider separating the sections if necessary.

Does that sound right? Open questions:

    1. What icon would you expect to see displayed next to your custom links? We can probably render the favicon of whatever link you give using Google's Favicon API - but just curious if you expect something else.
    2. How many links and what are the most common ones you think you would add? You mentioned your own website/blog, I'm just curious about if you could think of any other examples - it may influence what we think the ideal solution is 🤔

I think I could take this issue on, I'm totally new to Modrinth & it's codebase (and I'm a FE engineer) but seems like I can mostly take bits and pieces from how the other links work and dev this on my own.

Thank you for the detailed feedback and for considering taking this on!

My apologies for the confusion in the issue description—I made a mistake in the text. I actually meant "profile pages" instead of "project pages."

So, the request is to allow creators to add custom external links with custom labels to their user/profile page (sidebar or links section), rather than individual project pages.

Thanks for pointing this out, and sorry for any confusion caused!

Yes, exactly like GitHub's profile links!

Using Google's Favicon API for the icons sounds great, and allowing 1–3 custom links for personal sites or blogs would be super useful.

    exactly like GitHub's profile links!

Got it, thanks! OK, cool, I'll probably start with just a 🔗 icon for now, which is just that little bit simpler and more like GH anyway :P

OK so I've been snooping around the codebase for the last hour or so and here's my plan - probably 1 PR per step:

    1. Add a SQL migration to add the column w/ backwards compat. Before continuing, wait for that to get deployed & ran (maybe I need an admin or something to do this? Again I'm totally new here, will ask PR reviewer).
    2. Update labrinth code to support creation (+ validation & safety measures against malicious links) and reading links to pass them to the FE.
    3. Update labrinth code to support updating and removing links.
    4. Update FE code to render options for adding, updating, removing and re-ordering links when updating profile - as well as displaying them in-order on the profile page in it's own section on the right side.

I don't know if there is some gating mechanism in use here, but hopefully this is straightforward enough anyways.

A SQL (schema) migration in this context I'm referring to a snippet of SQL that needs to be run on the DB instances in order to change the schema in some way. So for example, if I did not do this, then in app code I started trying to read some column from the a table and the column doesn't exist, it will fail. If you look at my linked PR to do this, I'm just adding a column for these custom links, giving it a default value. After this is executed on whatever DB instances Modrinth has, then I can update application code to read and write to this new column.

Welp, my PR got closed -

this is a feature we're working on ourselves, so we won't be accepting a third party contributions for this

so good news is that maintainers will be adding this themselves soon! (hopefully soon)
