Screen reader is announcing questions as toggle button off for every question which is confusing to the screen reader users. #4892
Adaptive Cards supports repetitive submissions. In other words, after a button is clicked, the user can go back and click another button. This is the design of Adaptive Cards.
Thus, multiple choices requires us to use a push button approach via aria-pressed="true" to indicate what button is selected.
If repetitive submission is not desirable, the customer should consider using suggested actions, instead of Adaptive Cards.
HI William Wong (@compulim) Thanks for sharing details on this with your justification to mark it as By Design. I discussed this issue with SMEs and per their feedback, this does not sound like an accessibility issue. But this should be documented in Bot Framework Webchat docs on how these button works and what is the purpose of functionality on these buttons.
We earlier answered that aria-pressed was by design, so that the answer a user chose stays available to screen readers. We changed this: hearing "toggle button, off" on every question is confusing, and these buttons never toggle back. Since #5900, card action buttons are plain buttons, so screen readers say "button":
After Adaptive Cards performs an action, its button is described as "Selected" (aria-describedby), so the chosen answer is still read when the user returns to it (WCAG 4.1.2).
A Submit whose inputs fail validation is not marked.
Hosts with CSS for .ac-pushButton[aria-pressed='true'] should target .ac-pushButton.adaptive-card-renderer__action--selected instead. Both changes are on main and will ship in the next release.
We are closing this issue as fixed by #5900 and #5928. Please reopen if the questions are still announced as toggle buttons on a build that includes them.
The fixes (#5900 and #5928) are now available in the nightly build botframework-webchat@4.19.3-main.20261021.71a806e (npm tag main), and will ship in the next release.
