## Introduction

When changing your native mobile app or designing a custom widget, you may need to debug your implementation. The Make It Native app exposes a developer mode which supports debugging native mobile apps for expert developers. Using Google Chrome is recommended for this, as it starts automatically during debugging.

**Open DevTools** appears in the developer menu of the Make It Native app, but it does not open React Native DevTools. This is a known issue and a limitation of React Native, which does not include its debugger in release builds of an app. As the Make It Native app is distributed as a release build, you cannot use React Native DevTools with it.

To debug with React Native DevTools, use a custom developer app built with a debug configuration, for example the `devDebug` variant. For more information, see [Creating a Custom Developer App](/refguide/mobile/distributing-mobile-apps/building-native-apps/how-to-devapps/). To inspect your app in the Make It Native app, use [React Developer Tools](#rn-dev).

To start a debugging session in a custom developer app built with a debug configuration, do the following:

When the custom developer app finishes loading your app, do the following:

1. Open the developer menu by using a three-finger long press.
2. Tap **Enable Remote js Debugging**.

Your mobile app should start reloading, and a Chrome window should launch on your desktop pointing to a debugging address. Change the address in your browser's navigation bar to *localhost:8083/debugger-ui* manually and go to that page.

If Chrome launches but does not load your app, check that your app is running in Mendix Studio Pro. If it is, click **Stop** ({{% icon name="controls-stop" %}}), then click **Run Locally** ({{% icon name="controls-play" %}}) again to restart your app.

Your browser's debugging tools should be pointing to your app. Now, you can debug your app like you would any other web app.

Other tools can help you debug Mendix apps, such as the [Using React Developer Tools](#rn-dev) section below. Regardless of which tool you use, remember that Mendix uses a different port (8083) than a default React Native installation would (8080).
React Native DevTools opens on your desktop and connects to your app. You can inspect your app and set breakpoints in its JavaScript files.

React Developer Tools is [an app](https://github.com/facebook/react/tree/main/packages/react-devtools) which will allow you to see investigate the way your native page is rendering, adjust things like spacing in a live editor, and inspect the state and props of your pluggable and native widgets. To proceed, you must also have [Node and NPM](https://nodejs.org/en/download/) installed.

This entire section can be marked as optional for Studio Pro 11.6 and later versions. React Native ships React Native DevTools package, which then also bundles with Mendix Studio Pro.

True, I changed it so that the steps are optional but with a side-note pointing to the documented Known Issue where Make it Native (production) does not include these components. So the steps are needed there to go over it.
