^p stands for a paragraph mark (a hard return) in Microsoft Word.
It happens when you press the Enter key.
It ends a paragraph and starts a new line.

    I don't see the need to support Microsoft formatting in linux.

    ^p and ^l are Microsoft Word's own Find and Replace codes, not a general text-editing standard. Word has a whole set of these "special character codes" for its search box
