re-booted P.C ran mintupdate from terminal window. The mintupdate window opened briefly and then closed on the terminal, there is a message " Flatpak: done generating updates" but nothing further

Can you check the System Reports app for a crash report?

Nothing in there. System Reports is clean and Crash Reports only has reports for 3 crashes of nemo-desktop from about a week ago.

This appears to be connected to the start up. If I wait for the shield Applet icon to appear the Update manager works as expected. If I open the Update manage before the Shield Applet Icon becomes visible then the Update Manager will close when the Shield Icon is displayed.

    Experiencing the same here.

Opening mintupdate before it autostarts (the default delay is 20s), causes it to close when the autostart runs.
